Driveclub PS Plus Edition Delayed by Server Issues

Don't the publishers usually handle servers and not the developers? I mean as far as hosting the dedicated servers. Obviously the server-side software is on Evolution but the server infrastructure itself is on Sony and PSN itself being smooth is not necessarily an indication that the Driveclub server infrastructure is sound.

It's possible that Evo underestimated how demanding their game is. It's also possible that its a problem you can't throw servers at.

Are we supposed to believe that EVO/Sony could not predict that releasing a free game to 1st party starved masses would cause server issues, not to mention the console with tons of users on it. Nobody could see this coming? They had A LOT of time, what the hell have they been doing?

PS+ Edition, we're waiting!

Any word on when the ps+ version is releasing? Been discussing team names with my gaf team but can't play. =(

I tweeted Rushy about that but no answer . He doesn't respond to critic only positieve things. He and Evo lost my respect like DICE did with BF4.

Apologies if this has been asked already, but can I purchase the PS+ Upgrade in the UK and get stuck into the single player right now? There's enough positive impressions of the game to have swayed me.

Or is the will the upgrade only work once the PS+ edition is released?

Without knowing the cause, it's really hard to tell. As I've mentioned before, there could just be a bug that causes PS4s to constantly ping the servers or otherwise effectively do an accidental DDOS. That wouldn't be on PSN, that would be on Evo.

We'll likely never know. I tend to think it's more likely DC's fault than PSN's, but without knowing specific details it's mostly just a coin flip of 'who do i feel like blaming today'.

Fortunately, I'm patient, so not really bothered. A week without DC isn't the end of the world, I'm still buried in Natural Doctrine (vita) and Shadow of Mordor (ps4).

Quick question, when Project Gotham Racing 2 launched in Fall 2003 on the original XBox, it supported Xbox Live, which itself had only just launched the year before. -- How did PGR2's launch go with its online play ?

i don't remember there being a lot of issues, but that was over a decade ago, so i might be misremembering.

Wow that is not a good look. Problems and mistakes are inevitable; we're all human. But when you don't address the issues head on that's way worse than the initial problem.

Do people really expect the PS+ version to launch when people are out of the office for the weekends (I.E. non work days)? I'm not expecting it until next Tuesday at earliest personally. Also maintenance is just two days away so you'd get the game only not to be able to play it online in two days.

He had an extra year to fix his mistakes. The reviews are brutal to the game but I was planning to support his work by buying the game (even if I dont buy games that score that low)
But these problems are just ridiculous for a launch game, there is no excuse for this!

Well, people rightfully expected the PS+ version when the game launched, as Sony and Evo promised officially. Every minute past that is simple incompetence.

For Evo's sake, the PS+ version needs to launch ASAP, regardless of whether or not it's the weekend.

I would think given the fact that their game is dysfunctional and killing their reputation, they shouldn't be taking a weekend off. Every minute they don't work on the game, the worse this gets. Not just for the individual consumer, but for the game as a whole. This is an ostensibly "social" game, and not being online is going to kill the community. Can't see why you'd take a weekend off with your jobs possibly at stake.

Yeah I'm really baffled. Presumably extra millions of dollars and countless man hours were invested in delaying the product to improve it. I mean they are at the finish line, why would they undermine all that work by not keeping an open line of communication with the players? Twitter and PSblog posts are free!

It may already be at the point where the game has a reputation that is unsalvagable, I don't know, but you'd think they'd want to do everything in their power to avoid that.

Are updates every 24 hours really necessary? I mean, it's the weekend, and there may not be anything to 'update' in the first place.

I wouldn't say it's necessary but the weekend means nothing when they launched a game long touted for its social features and the online hardly works at all.

The PS+ edition isn't coming anytime soon since I bought the game retail at full price and can't even connect yet. They have to serve people like me first before even thinking of releasing the free version and potentially crashing their servers again.

Yeah that is definitely true. You paid full price so you deserve to have all of your problems addressed first. Sigh, it's going to be really tough for Sony to fix this issue short of just plopping down millions to put up new servers immediately, but I just don't see them doing that just to accommodate freeloading players like me.

They really should have just not promised the PS+ version in the first place.

At this point I wouldn't expect anything until they update the store again, which will be Tuesday, if not the Tuesday after considering those who bought the game are still having issues.

Personally, that's what I expect, seeing as it's the weekend, and Monday is a planned maintenance. However, just out of courtesy for their PlayStation Plus customers, they need to step up to the plate and make a statement ASAP, to explain the reason for the continued delay and offer a realistic expectation of when the PS+ edition will finally become available.

If it's not going to be for another week or two, then I don't have a problem with that--but they really ought to come out and say that now, instead of giving their customers the silent treatment. Offering a statement would show concern and respect for their customers. Hiding and dodging the issue shows cowardice.

If they dont fix the game and release the PS+ edition by Monday I will be at that point. I wont buy it and just let them dig their own grave.

Im sorry for my reactions but Im just fcking pissed. You delay a game by a year and yet you are not incompetent to deliver a good game with working servers.

Im starting to give up about the free version, and to feel sorry for those who still cant play online. Cant believe how Evolution messed up with this game release! If thats their preparation to release their racing game of dreams then I cant imagine what would have been if it wasnt! It deserves some negative press!

I think your reaction is totally justified so no need to be sorry for anything. I sometimes think Sony should hire some people from GAF (i.e. the hardcore of the hardcore) along with those ex journalists they've been hiring. I really can't understand why they don't get that there really needs to be an outward facing rep right now to people like us. It's especially necessary when simply fixing the game right now doesn't seem to be a possibility.

As many of us said earlier, they should have done an open beta for all PS+ owners, a la Destiny. Would have been a great way to test their servers and social features.

I had planned to buy the game after i tried the free version.. Now ive decided to avoid it until i see it on sale. And i dont think im alone. They really made a big mistake this release and im sure it damaged their sales.

Haven't played the game yet, I will try it when the plus version eventually releases but the whole thing has been pretty embarrassing for Sony/Evolution.

From a poorly worded "Playstation Plus edition" that made people think they were getting a lot more than it has ended up being (I'm not convinced they didn't scale back their original plus edition plans), to an 11 month delay a few weeks from launch and then a completely broken game when it finally does ship to mediocre reviews and finally an indefinite postponement of the aforementioned "Plus edition".

I'm not to fussed because all this has completely killed my hype for the game, I wouldn't be surprised if there's lay offs at Evolution studios soon though.

i feel similarly, although I haven't completely ruled out buying the game

They need to do both ASAP. PS Plus subscribers actually paid as well for it. It has been one of the giant promised games for over a year now.

Weekend or not, when there is a crisis of this magnatude, you should be working day, evening and weekend to fix it. This is a huge marketing mess.

Amen.

I feel bad because I signed my name up to a GAF club but I was always intending to try the game first.

I suppose it doesn't matter since the online is broken anyway, so it's not like my 'club-mates' are missing out, lol. But at this point it's highly doubtful that I'll buy the full game, unless we get the PS+ version in the next two weeks and it's utterly incredible.

Shame, as I was really looking forward to this for some time. Now I wish they'd done another Motorstorm instead :(

I certainly am not saying Evo is completely to blame or Sony is blameless. Sony's response to the situation was terrible actually. I'm just a bit suspect of the fact that other online-heavy games have launched well. Also, Evo had an extra year to account for the millions of PS+ users. Even if they weren't planning on that many sales, they had to know there are millions of PS+ users that would be killing their servers trying the game for "free."

Overall, this is a disgusting mess for both Sony and Evo.

This is what I would think as well.

If that is so, why is Evo working on the server code and not Sony? That seems indicative of something wrong on Evo's use of the server's infrastructure. Maybe Sony didn't teach them how to properly maximize the bad servers, but the way this is getting fixed makes it seem like it's on Evo's end.

Evolution IS Sony. They are owned by Sony. Sony is ultimately responsible. Just like when BF4 servers have a problem, people aren't bitching about DICE, they're bitching about EA which is an umbrella that has DICE under it. Sony WWS owns Evolution, Evolution's game is having problems, therefore Sony is overall responsible for this issue.

Yes it is most likely server software issues and not hardware and Evolution devs are working on the issue, but to say that Sony is blameless when one of their studios messes up, that's not accurate.

Hm. Interesting how I said the exact opposite of that.

How exactly is this Sony's fault?

While the I've no doubt the cause of the issue is a technical one on the Evolution side, as publisher, Sony would have handled QA, and the lack of an Open Beta is a strange omission for a game with such crucial network requirements. I can't help but suspect that the decision not to have an open beta was a business one, which would likely have been made by the publisher, more so than the developer.

I just hope the solution comes soon, so I can stop reading all the whining because about someones free PS+ game is a little late. Complaints about the paid version not working are fair - but almost all MP games have server issues at launch nowadays. If you don't expect some problems, you're just not using your head.

I agree fully on the Open Beta thing. They could have easily made that a PS+ exclusive to get a good taste of what the server load would be like.

I don't agree on your attitude towards MP server issues. Just because it's commonplace doesn't mean that we as consumers should put up with it.

I would say we'll be lucky if we get the PS+ Edition before Halloween. If they're having this much trouble getting the game online for people who purchased the game (which I'm assuming is less than 1m), they'll have no chance getting the rest of the PS+ users online.

It's not that I think we should put up with it, but people are acting like is the first time it's ever happened, or that it only happens with PSN. All these threads jump straight to reactions like "Sony Fix PSN!" or "I'm paying for PS+! How come all of that money isn't being spent on servers?".
