Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

A good percentage of games many people say are horrible are actually pretty good.

A good percentage of games people say are amazing and applaud for moving gaming forward in the current year don't really live up to the hype at all, but are still pretty good.

Nintendo's biggest challenge isn't catching up to what the rest of the industry is doing, but surviving until a few more generations churn through the gaming audience establishing a more varied and healthy demographic spread. Enthusiast gaming is still in its first anti-social teen / laconic college student phase.

I think a big reason why so many people are suddenly underwhelmed by the latest AAA games is the shock value of videya games looking like movies and talking like peoples is starting to wear off. Many may not know how to articulate it yet, but the weakness underlying the design of so many styles of games that became popular last generation are beginning to reveal themselves.

Both sides? So the misogynistic liars on one side are equivalent to those calling them out for their hatred, bigotry and death threats?

Yes. Both sides of the discussion need to grow the fuck up and play some games. One side in particular really needs grow the fuck up and play some games.

-Love RE6 and RE5
-Love Final Fantasy XIII
-Love MGS4
-Love Metroid Other M

-Dislike all Naughty Dog games and other Sony first Party with the exception of Quantic Dream, NanaOn-Sha and Polyphony, solely because of the amazing Omega Boost.
-Consider GTA and the Half Life series screamingly overrated.

You're welcome.

I don't get the hype around The Master Chief Collection. Why is everyone so excited about it? Haven't we already played those games? Is the any new content? Seeing people claiming it's the only game they'll get this fall boggles my mind. Is it really what this gen is for you? Remakes of stuff we already played? What am I missing here?

I'm sure the women like to, but they're too busy getting death threats and being doxxed.

But I guess they should grow up amirite? What a stupid opinion.

They want to dream that Bungie didn't leave Microsoft.

This is the most useless thread on this entire god damn site.

"i like this game that is not very popular"'

"i dislike this game that is very popular"

wow, so brave.

So edgy.

Whilst I am aware it's just a game and I am not trying to be overly dramatic, to me, Sunset Overdrive sums up the way I feel about modern society.

Just watching the trailer it is all about "wow look how cool and Xtreme we are!", "bodacious", "rad dude", breaking the fourth wall etc.

I always say, you are either cool or you're not, you can't "buy" cool. Sunset Overdrive is like some loser you know trying their hardest to convince everyone that they're really hip but most people actually snigger at them behind their back.

And for some reason, watching the trailer reminds me of a lot of the conversations I've had with 18-20 year old hipsters. An entire generation with a chip on their shoulder.

Sorry, it's hard to put into words what I dislike about the game. I don't feel I've explained it the way I'd like, but it's 8am and I'm not a morning person lol.

Call me an old fart, but Sunset Overdrive is the perfect example of what I like to call a dumb game for dumb gamers. Mindless. All style (if you want to call it that) and no substance. The type of game for people who don't read books because they're "boring".

Yep. This is pretty much what I expected, just wanted to confirm. Well, it is a controversial opinion thread so you're welcome to express it.

No. NO. There's a Gamergate thread for this. Take that stupid quagmire of an argument and keep it the fuck out of here, please.

While the subject matter is very touchy, and there is a thread for it, I'm just calling out an underbaked, ill-thought out opinion. Opinions are not immune from criticism, even in this thread. I'll not argue any further, but I've made my point pretty clear no? (Which is far more than can be said for the other person)

People should back up their unpopular, controversial opinions otherwise what you are doing is little more than an impotent whine. Do you not agree?

Plus, we are talking about controversial opinions so we are on topic. Unless a mod tells me so, I don't think there's a problem so stop trying to shut down discussion.

I'm so glad SquEx is dropping the turn based aspect of FF with XV because I hated that shit. Turn based is so 90s, let's move on people! We have enough buttons on the damn controller as it is, using them would be nice for a change...

Also, please never remake FF7. Thanks!

1.) The idea of a "controversial" opinions thread, IMO, is that regardless of what people say, the hivemind concept applies to any place where you gather a bunch of like-minded people. I've noticed that people get to express dissenting opinions more in here than in other threads, where they are immediately shouted down by pages upon pages of people.

2.) I'm shutting down discussion because there's already a place to discuss that. Gamergate is such a massive issue at this point that it engulfs threads that have nothing to do with it. I really don't want that to happen here.

Try this again next year. Destiny was just a bad game. Titanfall could've been bigger but limited itself by being Xbox only. inFamous: Second Son was a launch window game with launch window game problems (it was properly polished, but short as all heck). Watch_Dogs was only exciting the first time we saw it, all times after that seemed to generate less positive reactions.

That covers just about every major title that came out this year which was next-gen only. It's just been a shit year for AAA gaming.

From what I've seen, this thread is sometimes used as a refuge for people to express opinions that would otherwise get reamed by logical arguments (though I'm not saying a mob shouting down a dissenting opinion doesn't happen either, it does). There are people who attempt to justify why they feel the way they do, and those posts are great, we should have more of that. The others type of opinions bring down the quality of the thread and gum it up with nonsense.

Yes, but they're not in that thread, and are extremely unlikely to ever post their opinions in that thread. I understand why, there's like a million mods watching that thread like a hawk. That, however, does not mean that they're opinions on that issue is immune from discussion or debate in this thread. I understand why you want to shut down the discussion (it really does engulf everything it touches), but I also can't let such an opinion lie unchallenged. You should probably consult a mod and they can make a decision on how to handle GamerGate stuff in this thread (or any other thread). Like a "Don't post any GamerGate stuff in this thread" warning in the title or OP.

Lore is a crutch for dull gameplay.

I completely disagree. I don't even see how the two are related. Dark Souls has lots of lore and the gameplay is excellent. Similarly, Metroid Prime has buckets of lore and some of the best first person mechanics and gameplay of its generation.

I don't feel quite as strongly about it as you do, but I also dislike the tryhard self-aware comedy of SO. It's as if it's trying to parody all these gamey ideas, but the game itself does exactly what it's mocking.

  1. The Last of Us was more enjoyable to watch on YouTube than to play.
  2. the self-righteousness of everyone involved in Gamergate is more fun to witness than most games.

Cut-scenes are an amazing storytelling tool for video games.

"Telling the story through gameplay" works only for few kinds of games and is inappropriate for most.

Gameplay by itself doesn't mean much for the majority of video games.

I sort of see your point and I don't like the style myself but Sunset Overdrive is hardly the first game to do this. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, SSX, and other games have had the very same vibe. As a result, I wouldn't say that there's anything modern about what you dislike about SO.

I'm trying not to be pick on you but from the last paragraph, your complaint seems to stem from plain old cynicism to me. You don't have to like it but I think you should lighten up a bit, games can be mindless fun, nothing wrong with that.

Now here is something I consider controversial.

Not every sexualization of women is sexist or misogynist. Not every bikini wearing, large breasted woman is just there for eye-candy, nor should we prevent having sexy women in games.

Context is everything.

I think a lot of Microsoft appreciators have weak memory and despite being excited about some of the upcoming exclusives (real or timed ones) have forgotten that early on the 360's lifecycle they paid for a bunch of exclusives and once they had the market share they deemed acceptable stopped supporting in any way shape or form a plethora of game genres. Rather than investing in new studios and developing original IPs they buy exclusives from third-parties and assign their newest and best studios to work on already existing properties.

I have concerns for the Xbox One's future and I'm concerned that at every chance Microsoft has to shape things for the better they make a turn for the worse. The amount of money spent on Mojang's purchase, as an example, versus the amount of titles they could have financed with the same budget is one of the most recent examples I can remember.

I don't like it because dumb games like SO are marketed so up the wazoo that they take attention away from other more worthy games.

I'm sure some people think games like SO are "fun", that's fine by me, but I reserve my right to think of them as dumb gamers.

Which they are.

IMO.

I loathe multiplayer games of all sorts. Co-Op, online, anything remotely similar to these. I can't stand them. Also, I hate the fact that, barring a few, developers are spending all their energy focusing on that crap these days. Thanks to the plethora of gamers who have made MP famous, it's turned into a primary focus for a fucktonne of developers.

Worst offender in this regard? Fuckin Square Enix and them turning the Legacy of Kain brand into a F2P MP game with their upcoming Nosgoth.

Gameplay by itself doesn't mean much for the majority of video games.

I think cutscenes are a crutch for story telling, however there are also some things you cannot do with a gameplay analogue in which case utilizing a cutscene is fine (the question then becomes whether something is doable as gameplay or not, and that will get very messy).

In fact, it can work with a lot of things. You can express mundanity extremely easy with it, for example Euro Truck Simulator. The thing is that almost no one is trying to do that, making it much more difficult for people who do since they have no reference point or case example to learn from, which in turn makes the concept propagate much slower (and chances getting outpaced by traditional storytelling via cutscene). Even making the player pull the trigger to shoot someone in a cutscene can be very effective. Making the player participate, I think, is always superior to making the player watch passively, except in cases when it isn't possible to translate a cutscene into gameplay (which is a different discussion).

  1. The Last of Us was more enjoyable to watch on YouTube than to play.

  1. I have to agree with that. Story is well told but gameplay is severely limited and repetitive.
I had to force myself to play it until the end, I was relieved and knew I could sell it ASAP.

This is an interesting opinion. It's wrong, though. I'm SO much smarter than, well...everyone. Now I'm not playing Sunset Overdrive, but that's because I don't own (and can't afford) an Xbox One. And as much as I like to leave most people's opinions unchallenged, I honestly feel the person trying too hard to be cool here is you. It just reads as empty non-conformism.

You are entitled to your opinion as am I. I think certain types of gamers are dumb. I think people who don't read books are dumb. I think that people who like "music" but can't explain what kind of music they like are dumb. There are many more examples.

Society in general is getting dumber IMO.

You can label me what you like. I don't care and it doesn't and never will change my opinion on this.

Society in general getting dumber is patently false. There's more knowledge and its easier to obtain than ever before. The only way for society to actually be dumber is when people purposefully spread obviously false information.

The thing about reading books is an assumption you made that you're now trying to continue as if it's true.

Yeah, I really should've just left your statement to be vague and random. I don't know why, I just tend to be curious to see if people are capable of properly explaining their thoughts when they're different from mine.

There are no facts better than what you can discern with your own eyes.

And you could try to be a bit less of a hypocrite instead of telling people they're wrong "just coz". If that's all you got to say, then yes, you should probably keep quiet in future.

I have worked with young people for many years and the amount that can barely hold a pen and write their own name is staggering. Yes, modern technology and it's influence on the decaying of moral structures and parenting for example is a worry.

IMO.

While it is a great thing that more developers are recognizing PC gaming as a viable, healthy platform for their games, I have no issue with video games/genres traditionally associated with PC gaming being ported to and/or made with consoles in mind. I feel that a sect of PC gamers can be hypocritical in this regard, wanting to have their cake and eat it in terms of demanding console games. Given my casualized attitude to video games the "dumbed down" sentiment rings hollow to me or for clarity, I don't care so long as I find the game enjoyable. It's a selfish perspective, but it is what it is I enjoy all platforms of gaming.

Xbox fans are so envy of Playstation fans over The Last Of Us being exclusive to PS3 that they downvoted TLOU on every GOTY poll last year and now they are treating Sunset Overdrive as the next arrival of Jesus.

After pokemon Gold/Silver, the next best gen is 6 (Kalos).
