Marvel's Phase 3 Announced: includes Black Panther, Captain Marvel

Other than the fact that they could have just negotiated an extra film for him, they could easily solve this with story.

For instance, Civil War could end with Cap quitting and going off the grid. Infinity Wars: Part 1 could have Bucky holding the shield. At the end of part one the team is shattered with Thor falling. I'm like 99% sure Cap "dies" (these are comic books) in Civil War. Evans has said he wants to direct and is done doing movies; and I believe Cap 3 was his last contracted movie. I suspect if Evans is up for Avengers 3, shenanigans with Strange & Thanos lead to him being resurrected. But pretty sure Cap will bite the bullet.

Assuming typical Whedon level killing of characters; I am guessing Jane Foster, Pepper Potts, and Rhodes don't survive Avengers 2, and he may kill some combination of Hawkeye / Black Widow / Fury as well. Thor will leave Earth (with Jane dead) and Iron Man will be super done with all the things. Hulk goes into full blown hiding (terrified of his destructive potential), and Cap is done with everyone.
 
I think that Marvel has renegotiated Downey's deal twice now, for several tens of millions of dollars, just to keep him around longer kind of renders contract concerns null and void now imo. They're not going to shell out 40 million to get Downey into Cap 3 and then let Evans or Hemsworth walk just before the grand finale.

Evan's said he isn't interested in acting in Non-Marvel movies that he's not directing himself. It's been clarified by him twice and mentioned in this thread quite a few times.

RDJ is on a movie to movie basis, as is SJ. Eventually the profit roof will be reached though and Marvel won't be able to match the desired pay of all of these actors on a movie to movie basis. At that point, either they have less crossovers or they tap new actors or new characters in some cases to take on the roles/mantles.

Just like how people refused to believe Spiderman returning to the MCU was anything more than speculation, people will just assume it's news and run with it.

RDJ, SJ, Mackie, and Renner are Movie to Movie and everyone else has a set number. He's commited to a certain amount but that's not the same as people like Evans, Jackson, and Hemsworth who are being paid a set amount per movie for X amount of movies.

I need to ask a question but I dont know if its considered spoiler or not (its relation to the infinite wars) lol

But seeing as how people have dropped tid bits from the Civil war storyline I'm hoping I'm fine.

Inifinte Wars.... Is this Thanos looking for the gems or the storyline where he's looking for his son and Ebony Maw takes over Doctor Strange and tricks the avengers into telling him he's on earth?

I don't know where they're getting their info, but Deadline has said that Scarlett is signed for 8 films, Renner himself said he's on for 4 (three Avengers and 1 solo film which will probably be swapped for another option), and Jackson's deal has always been for nine -- it even says right there in the link :lol

Downey's was also originally for 4 films (3 Iron Man, 1 Avengers) but was renegotiated last year for Avengers 2 and 3. So I guess he's technically on a movie-to-movie basis now, but he's definitely obligated for Infinity War -- or at least one of them.

Two of those characters aren't even in Avengers 2 (Foster and Potts).
 
I haven't seen much discussion on how Ragnarok was presented. The quote from the presentation is:


What we will do between now and the release of this movie is to educate the rest of the world as to what [Ragnarok] means, and it's a very important word which means, essentially, "the end of all things." This is a very important movie for us in our Phase 3 timeline. As the Russos did so well reinventing Captain America in the Winter Soldier and changing everything that would come after it, that is the plan for Thor: Ragnarok; to take Thor to another level in his own franchise, and, in fact, picks up right after we leave him in Avengers 2, and will impact everything that comes afterwards.

So, yeah, it seems that this won't be a "just Asgard" adventure, but something that implements a massive change in the MCU landscape. Perhaps results of this is the cause of Inhumans appearing?

That makes me happy. Captain Marvel is Marvel's Superman, she's just rarely been treated as such. Going to be nice seeing what they do with her, understanding that her power level is so far above the others.




I do like that the idea of Dr Strange is to open up the world of parallel dimensions.

The distinction is that the people who are listed as Movie to Movie can negotiate more aggressively while the ones who are not, can't. That's why there were rumors that some of the actors (like Hemsworth) were becoming unhappy because they had lengthy contracts for relatively low amounts of money given the success and popularity the movies have garnered. Pretty much any of the Avengers could demand much higher pay rates for other movies but they're stuck in lengthy contracts.

I'm pretty sure that's also why actors portraying characters Marvel has big plans for are now being offered more lengthy contracts (Stan getting 9). So that Marvel doesn't get Downey'd again when they want an actor for a future film that extends past the numbered contract.

Edit: I guess the most straight forward way to say it is that Movie to Movie basically suggests that each additional movie after the original contracted amount can or has been negotiated while the numbered deals are set in stone.

It would make perfect sense to push for them to show up first in a Dr Strange movie.

Oh, Blah. Well, glad he is sticking around. Still think he's gonna get offed in Civil War though. They will want to drop a mic somewhere; and taking out Cap (even temporarily) would do it.

Not only that, but isn't the Tesseract + Infinity Gauntlet on Asgard? If so, that kind of implies how this will change everything in Phase 3.

Well the name obviously means big things will happen. I always assumed Thor 3 would be the last movie before Thanos finally makes his move, and it's probably going to involve him in some manner. Maybe Loki has to maintain his facade as Odin or risk the 9 Realms falling into chaos, which erupts when Thanos invades Asgard to recover the Tesseract, and murders Loki for his previous failure.

For sure, Marvel would get some pretty significant brownie points if the most powerful Avenger ends up being a woman. Thor is pretty wimpy compared to his comics counterpart, so if Carol maintains her normal power level, she'll be the clear winner.

She was very powerful in Avengers: EMH and I hope that's the kind of firepower she's gonna bring to the table in the MCU.
 
If I remember correctly, Marvel originally approached Emily Blunt for Black Widow, but she turned them down to make that awful Gulliver's Travels movie (among other reasons). I don't know how gracefully Marvel takes rejection, but at least there's a connection there between the actress and studio that makes the possibility of her being a different Marvel character a bit higher? Or maybe not.

Either way, I like her and would've preferred her as Black Widow over Scarlet.

I'm not sure if just transferring a few powerful artifacts from heros to villains would cut it. TWS literally changed the MCU world by bringing down SHIELD. For Ragnarok to do something similar, I'd think that the Asgardian control of the 9 realms is gone, and the magics that were introduced in Dr. Strange are now running rampant...which is where I could see Inhumans coming from.

She didn't turn Widow down as much as she had already signed for Gulliver's and the filming schedules conflicted. She did end up turning down a different role though. Maybe Jane in Thor? I can't recall atm.

She turned down Peggy Carter. I'm pretty sure she was going to be Widow, but Gulliver's ran long so she had to bail.

It's the only sensible choice. Unless Marvel stumps everyone and casts someone really left field like Brit Marling.

The pluses for Blunt are that she actually makes Hollywood films,has proved she can eclipse even Tom Cruise in an action heavy movie and more importantly be believable. Can do 'badass' without it becoming unbearable and she'll be the 'rightish' age when this launches.

Also Marvel apparently really love her.

Oh I know. I'm just saying as an additional thing that the one/two things Thanos wants is on Asgard. I bet he'll have a part to play with Ragnarok.

That sounds about right. And she's stated in interviews that she's still interested in working with Marvel. It has to be the right character and the right time though.

Sinister Six, ASM3 and probably ASM4 would have to tank. Then Sony wouldn't give up right away, they'd want to at least try everything they possibly could. And when that failed, they might still let the contract run it's course just to be dicks.

The only way I can see it happening in the next decade is a split Marvel/Sony ownership, with Sony handling the solo deals and Spidey making occasional cameos. But who knows if Marvel would even want that? Though you just KNOW somewhere in a Disney/Marvel vault is a "Sony fucking sucks" plan for Spidey in the MCU, how they'd build him up etc.
