With all the shit people wanna give Sony for the Amazing Spider-Man films, at least the essences of the characters in those movies are recognizable. Sony's not embarrassed by the source material, they're just not telling any interesting stories yet.

From the first movie or the new one?

This is actually the new one. The one that's upcoming. With teen Fantastic Four and Highschool Nerd Doom.

everything about this movie screams "we're just doing this to keep the license". Even more than Amazing Spider-Man

I really couldn't have come up with a worse idea if I really tried. I have to give credit where credit is due. They are fucking this up in spectacular fashion.

I already thought the last Doom in a FF movie was pretty high on the "...In Name Only" factor, but wow.

This looks like a perfect setup to a 90s superhero movie that is only good for comedians to record mocking commentaries for.

Its a movie that entirely made for saving the franchise for another 7 years.
This will be the first superhero movie I wont watch in cinema since a long time.

I'm still open minded about the film. I knew they are going for a vastly different take and that there will be lots of changes....

i get they want to make it culturally relevant and all but combined with the absolute trash images we've seen of their version of Doom, i can't imagine this being much more than a total pile of garbage.

and let's face it, an anti-social computer programmer being the villain is... lazy interpretation. i mean that's probably the first idea anybody would have about how to portray that character today.

Marvel be like this when Fox offers to sell the rights back after this bombs.

I fucking love Dr. Doom.

Doom during the whole AXIS thing was amazing.
I forgot how much i liked him since he hasnt been used too well lately(or ive missed the stories)

Did everyone forget about IM3 Mandarin?
Apparently they have fun destroying strong nemesis from the comics.

Funny i actually liked the Mandarin right up until the reveal in IM3, i hadnt seen many trailers or spoilers so i was expecting....something else.

On Topic
As long as at some point in the movie he becomes closer to the doom we all know and love i dont really care how much they fuck up his origin.

i only recently read the book of doom, so i shouldnt be all high and mighty about dooms origin, because till about 2 years ago i honestly didnt know the full origin.

So fuck it, let them have him as a programmer at the start....but make sure he becomes beast mode doom quickly.

Funny story; Fox had nothing to do with that.

Also funny story;
they didn't ruin anything, because Trevor taking the name of Mandarin didn't actually ruin the Mandarin himself, because the real Mandarin is still out there ready for Iron Man 4, unlike this Doctor Doom being the actual Doctor Doom and not some schmuck taking the name.

Agreed. I mean, we don't have any charismatic, yet violent Eastern European leaders that they could have drawn inspiration from.

I'm sorry, wasn't this movie suppose to be called "FANTASTIC Four", emphasis on the Fantastic. You know, a team that's suppose to go on fantastical science-y adventures? So far with this recent news and previous details are just killing any hope for this movie.

Why you do this fox.

I felt like IM3 was a conscious reworking of the original character, knowing exactly what made the original great, and choosing to go a different direction by playing with your expectations. It's totally okay to dislike it... but I felt that was a consious re-imagining whether you like it or not. The people who wrote that character knew who the original Mandarin was.

But this new Doom feels more like comic/video game movie adaptations of the 90s, where a writer who has zero interest in the original character looks at the costume/name and just makes up his own "realistic" (and somehow dumber) origin, because moviegoers don't understand that comic book nonsense. It's a very pre-MCE style move.

So if this movie bombs.... how long before Marvel get the rights

Doesn't matter if it bombs, as long as it gets made the licence is extended. Marvel don't even want the Fantastic 4 that badly anyway, they just want a share deal for the cosmic villains like Doom, Galactus, Annihilus & Blastaar.

Okay, so maybe Doom is the head of a group of hackers, and has risen to become a crime lord so powerful that he can threaten the whole world, and maybe the hacker group roleplays as an aristocracy in a 3D computer world where they all have fully modeled avatars.

Maybe Doom's roleplay storyline and avatar are basically identical to the comic character, and when he shows himself in real life he dresses up as well as he can to match the avatar, using a homemade tinfoil and sweatpants costume.

Basically a Larper.

Edit// and maybe he uses the riches from his life of crime to buy a huge estate and build himself a real life castle with a village around it, and then maybe he hires a bunch of people to pretend to be his subjects and live in the village and worship him so he can Larp as Doom all the time.

Upsetting.

Hahahahaha.

*Nods*

The name is OK, but everything else is tragic. I mean, I doubt he's a "blogger" rather than some stereotypical anti-social programmer, but still...

The crazy thing is that I'll still be rooting for him to punch Mr. Fantastic in his goofy face.
