I can only imagine they're doing this to be as completely different as possible from the previous movies. Otherwise, they're insane and incompetent rather than just being incompetent.

Or it's all out of spite, with the knowledge that even if the movie doesn't break any records they'll get their money back and to keep the franchise longer.

All of those would have been more interesting than simply saying, oh, he's adopted or just hand-waving it. If you're not going to do anything interesting with him being black, you may as well have just left him white, otherwise it just reeks of tokenism.

The reason Johnny Storm is black is because Josh Trank wants Michael B. Jordan to be the lead in his superhero movie. That's not tokenism. It's the opposite, in fact. They didn't change the race of Johnny Storm because they thought it'd be a nice bone to throw at the audience. They changed the race of Johnny Storm because the guy this director wanted to play Johnny Storm is a black guy.

Jordan was THE first person hired on the film. He was the first piece in place. The movie is literally being built AROUND him. Granted, it appears to be a not great movie based on what little we've seen and the change to Doctor Doom's character. But that doesn't change the fact this is a Michael B. Jordan movie, for all intents and purposes.

It's also weird to suggest they're not going to do anything interesting with him when Johnny Storm is likely going to be, for the first time, THE focal point of a Fantastic Four adaptation, as part of a multi-racial family. Sounds interesting to me in comparison to Johnny being a privileged smartass who just fucks around all day.

there is nothing here to suggest that this will be their approach.


As you suggest, Jordan could have been hired because Trank wanted to work with again. Also possible he had a studio deal with Fox. Probably both.

If you're going to put your foot down on a black Johnny Storm, you'd think common sense would dictate a black Sue.

And when is Johnny not the focal point of the last two movies? He steals the show in the first movie (both on screen and in-universe), he's the only one who confronts the Silver Surfer 1 on 1, and he gets the Super Skrull powerup to take on cosmic Doom.

Even if this was true, then you'd still have the problem of Victor. Victor is a foil to Reed, just as Reed is a foil to him. It is a battle of the minds. Johnny is a powerhouse, not a thinker.

Putting Johnny in focus is fine, but victor is the worst possible villain for him.

The fact he was first hired and the movie was then built around him suggests it pretty strongly, I'd argue. You'd have to counter-argue that the movie is trying to be a more faithful representation of the Fantastic Four and the normal team dynamics that go along with that.

I don't think that's what we're getting, obviously.

If he was the focal point there'd be no show for him to steal. He'd have already had it. The fact he "stole the show" in the first place says he wasn't the focus.

Again - it's hard to argue that this is tokenism when the director made a choice to build the movie around the black actor, as opposed to keeping the character a sidekick and just turning him black to shut up any possible critics.

I would say that he was locked down first because
a) already worked with Trank
b) Fox exercised the option they had on him after Chronicle

not because this is a vehicle designed for him.
