Legend of Zelda Wii U Gameplay Demo

You would think Nintendo would know better at this point. When you're showing off the very first gameplay from one of your biggest franchises, you would show something that shows the game more fully. I know they're still a year out and so on, but when you show off your game for the very first time it needs to be a good showing, no matter what.

It's bad marketing not to know that people will react on what they're shown, no matter the context. It was an incredibly honest demo, but they should have known people would react to it being sparse and have populated a demo area with what they wanted the final game to feel like. Nintendo could have hit it out of the park with this first showing, but instead they made something that created two camps instead. Hopefully they can show something better and more representative of the final game early next year in order to destroy what negative buzz this has created.

1 - Why can't people judge what they see? There's no point having a thread about the trailer if every comment has to be "I'M HYPED" "SO GOOD". I'm offering reasons for every argument I make, I'm not trolling or anything.

2 - Critics aren't to be taken as personal injuries, some of you are overly defensive about basic observations said with no harm intended, which are based on the shown stuff and aren't meant to be final and definitive.

3 - The dismissal of every and any negative reaction is worrysome and creates a bad atmosphere, where you end up thinking you can't freely voice your opinion for fear of being ridiculed.

Agree 100%.

This will probably be a great game, but I wish I could say that as a result of having seen a great trailer, rather than trying to rationalize away my disappointment.

People are making judgments based upon what they see.
Everyone knows this game is based on early footage. That's being taken into consideration.
This is neogaf. I'm not so sure.

Given that it's early footage and seems to be qickly done to shut these up who wanted some footage this looks alright so far. I love it that the first scene was a recreation of that Zelda 1 pic.

I made some images based on a few people's reactions to the gameplay footage.

*images of trees n shit*

I don't play Zelda to look at trees, mountains and rivers ; I play Zelda because I really like Action Adventure games with well designed item mechanics and fantastic puzzle/obstacle course-based level design.
As far as I'm concerned everything in this footage looked mundane besides the new "dismounting + arrows" mechanic and the return of the sailcloth item.
I mean, context and theming is important to me but I care more about the gameplay. Also, after ALBW I can't help but be worried that this whole "giant open world" thing they're stuck on might negatively effect the core elements that I care about in LoZ (It's quite easy to why ALBW's dungeon design was so elementary)

If the footage was of Link in some cool dungeon/"dungeon-like overworld area" using some sort of weird new item to fight enemies, get around obstacles, and solve puzzles I'd probably be bouncing off the walls in full hype mode right now...but as of right now all I can muster is "cool...give me something more substantial at E3."

Yep. They did it for real. Can't wait.

Wii U Get!

My plan was to never get another Nintendo console, but with the selfs if my dreams being made its going to be a challenge to stay away.

This looks amazing

My hype continues to grow! The world looks absolutely vast.
I do hope all the bits show using gyros can simply be done with analog sticks.
Also odd that they decided to do an offscreen capture instead of a direct feed. Gave the whole thing a weird lighting.

This looks absolutely incredible.
I can't wait to immerse myself in the world and waste countless hours of my life!! :D

SS didn't do anything for me because of the weak hub-world. In fact, as a huge Zelda fan, SS is the only Zelda I never finished.

They already had a first showing at E3 and they killed it.

I'm not sure if this was the result of "they had to show something" or maybe them just wanting to keep the cards close in hand for a little while longer.

Ninteno is very secretive, and GAF, more often than not, isn't quite fond of this particular trait. I'm not surprised though, given how many of their projects have been upended due to executive Miyamoto decisions, for better or for worse.

When I multiply the number of trees by 20, I get that the map shows an area of 28160 x 23040 feet. This is equal to an area of 5.42 x 4.36 miles (8.7 x 7.1 Km). That's equivalent to 23.6 square miles or 61.8 square kilometers.

These figures are probably off by a few hundred (or thousand) feet, but they give a good estimate of how truly huge the new Hyrule will be.

That is 3 times the Stratis Island of Arma 3 (and 1/5 the size of Altis^^). Big enough for a Zelda game. Hope it won't be clustered with icons and quest markers. I want that Wind Waker Adventure feel where you have to discover things on your own.

Except this wasn't the first showing, that was E3 and they fucking killed it there.

Yeah, I'm just gonna wait until we see the actual game until I make any kind of judgements. Showing a bit of empty field doesn't really mean anything to me. I'll be interested when we see dungeons, characters, weapons, plot devices, etc.

If this is anything like Zelda 1, you're gonna be carpetbombing every last one of those trees so some old fart can bitch at you about how you burned down his front door.

Not to be spoiled sport or anything, but I wonder what SCEA has in store for Uncharted? A gameplay trailer like Zelda or something even more polished? Usually ND is good at delivering quality promotional videos for their games. This weekend is just too awesome! Its like the Christmas edition of E3! Gonna miss it when its all over!

Random events, enemies, wildlife, some villages, and interesting ruins or areas to explore. That's what will help the game feel alive.

E3 Zelda U Reveal

The reveal trailer looked very much alive. There were villagers working in the fields, some animals, and a small house in the distance. Plus the random Princess Mononoke demon. Hopefully the full game has all of this stuff. I'll be holding off judgement until then.

For now though? I am SO HYPED TO GO ON AN ADVENTURE!!

Saw some comments about how it's realistic not to see animals everywhere because you don't really see them much when you go out in real life. Go to the right places in the world and you can find wildlife all over. This is a FANTASY world! I'd love for it to be like Princess Mononoke with all kinds of life everywhere.

Even if it is an incredibly empty field, I'm still interested in what they do with it. It's not Assassin's Creed, they haven't so thoroughly lost my trust that I can already tell how it's going to play from a few seconds of footage.

If they think the game is fun the way they're designing it, it's worth it for me to check it out.

Everyone else can do what they want.

They talk about eating the apples from the trees and this will be the first 3D Zelda where you can eat an apple. But I am curious about the apples missing from the trees and what this means. Is there a village or farmers nearby that plucked them from trees to sell in the markets or did Link just get some from earlier in the day?

There's a theme we see with small villages and farmers around the land, and we did see farmers doing their thing in the reveal trailer.

This looks way better than expected. It reminds me TP but it's way more lively. And damn, horses were the best thing about this. Wild horses and no tree collisions. Wow.

In a perfect world, it'd mean that there's a season type system, to go along with the day and night system.

I can already tell I going to love exploring this world. Huge landscapes? Yes please. The complaints of emptiness don bother me. Wind Waker and Shadow of the Colossus are two of my favorite games of all time. Even when I knew an area contained nothing in particular, I still enjoyed exploring the land.

Hmmm. I'm not feeling this.

Graphics look kinda barren.

EDIT: Forget it. I watched the whole thing. They need to make another game in one year if they're gonna sell this to me. This looks downright bad. Ocarina of Time has a more lively world than this.

There could be some work around like the apples in that orchard respawn sometime around sunrise and the farmers come pluck them around noon. But yeah an actual seasonal system would be perfect.

The best open world games are the ones where you can get lost just exploring their world(s). I really hope this game is one of those games.

Hope to see Link in his green tunic next year.

World looks beautiful.

I need to see more combat, though. The new jumping off horse to bow mechanic has potential, but won't be much fun if the enemies are few, spread, and easy. We need hordes or big boss like encounters. Something to make it tense.

E3 had that big monster thing so there is hope. Don't know how fun/exciting it'll be to fight it though. Hope defeating it isn't just some glamorous puzzle requiring little to no skill building to defeat.

Also, the MUSIC IS BAD. I don't like what I've been hearing so far. How has Super Mario Galaxy gotten more epic music than a Zelda game?

Hopefully the final game has orchestrated pieces and beautiful/tense compositions. What I've heard so far makes the battles sound corny/silly/a joke and something to quickly jump by. Very cheap and unexciting.

Game looks good even if the way they showed it was terrible. It's 2014, almost 2015 and they thought it was a good idea to show the first gameplay of the game as offscreen footage. :/

shadow of the colossus had one of my favorite overworlds and there was nothing to do there (which isn't exactly true, but). i'm just excited that after twenty goddamn years of trying to do open world 3d zelda it looks like they'll finally be nailing it with this game.

I have a feeling that was entirely deliberate, to not show some rough spots. Or something.

I wouldn't worry about the music. This is pretty much guaranteed to be orchestrated. It likely hasn't even been recorded yet. Older trailers for Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were full of low-quality MIDI tracks.

music is like the last thing that gets added. not to say what's in there now isn't a placeholder, but usually it doesn't get done until a few months before a game's complete, i think. there's still a good year to go.

skyward sword had a tremendously wonderful soundtrack. i wouldn't be concerned about this game's music.

Liked what i saw so far. Also this game is a typical Zelda game. Enemies are found here and there in the overall world and doesn't need to be populated all throughout. This isn't Dark Souls or Skyrim where enemies are within 10ft radius. Hype is real for me.

...is there a dead channel in my sound system or something?

I just rewatched the entire video and didn't hear a single piece of music. What are you talking about?

I know right? Especially towards the end here: http://youtu.be/SECWlFInyFM?t=3m48s

The way the sun glistens over the (seemingly thousands) blades of grass so smoothly looks amazingly beautiful.

People complaining about it looking "bad" or "barren" do you really think Nintendo is going to show areas with a lot of new enemies and new locations/towns/NPC's? It's simply not going to happen in a demo preview. This is Nintendo after all.
