Man if this game turns out to be Zelda 1-esque I will freak out. I love Zelda 1 and seeing something similar to that but in 3D would be amazing.

Me too. There was that one part in the video where Miyamoto was like "this looks a bit suspicious. We must be nearing a dungeon." :D

If they can get the music right and some fun enemies, I can see myself getting lost in this world.

Well, will wait for E3 for more details.

I know it was a demo, but was I the only one who thought then open world implementation felt extremely empty (and there simply to make travel longer and the world to feel "bigger")?

Probably more elements are going to be added here and there. But also there will more areas to explore that we briefly could see in the demo.

Just think it felt real empty. A real risk of going overboard of making a large world when the open world appeal of this series is discovery of secrets and such.

If the areas are this empty, "More" is not what this game needs. It looks like an oversized Twilight Princess which was already an oversized Hyrule in itself.

At this point, Aonuma has all but explicitly said 'This game will emulate Zelda I'. I don't know how much more clear he can make it, tbh.

And this is why Zelda U is my most anticipated game of this generation...and possibly ever. The original Zelda is why I am posting on GAF. It's the reason I play video games. It's my favorite game of all time.

How about if they show us a scene where the first house he sees he walks link into and an old man tells him it's dangerous to go alone, take this.

It's almost as if the game is a year away from release.

Just wondering, in what ways can they improve the world map? More enemies, items, puzzles? In such a huge world, they're not going to be jam packing it with content in every square inch. It should be expected that there are going to be wide spaces with not a whole lot to do except run around and fighting the occasional enemy. At least they've made it visually appealing.

There ought to be puzzles scattered around, they just didn't focus on them here. Same with items and even sword combat.

I miss riding around Epona over a large field. Last time I did that was when I played TP in 2007.
I'm guessing they'll add a bunch of secret dungeons where you can collect materials to upgrade weapons and what not.I also feel like you'll be able to discover weapons in any order you like. Probably add multiple towns and villages to explore, interact with characters and pick up quests. Area specific enemies and creatures hopefully they don't over use one type of enemy.poe hunting. Perhaps they could make some secrets time sensitive. Like secret doors or passages are only visable at a certain time of day. Seems as though bug collecting will return so there's that. The first trailer suggests that mini boss battles could happen at anytime. It will be interesting to see how they tackle filling in the gaps now that they have the right scale. The best thing they can do is vary the landscape and create interesting locations and landmarks to spark our curiosity, and then reward players who do choose to venture far and wide with a useful item, easter egg or piece of info related to Zelda lore or the main story. The last thing we want is for horse riding to become like sailing in windwaker. A bunch of blue a couple islands and not much else. Asethitcally speaking I'm also really hoping they add weather effects too.

I still can't believe people thought an large open world was impossible for a Zelda game, let alone a Nintendo title no less.

I mean even with the knowledge of Xenoblade enormous environment, some were still adamant that Nintendo couldn't pull it off without Monolith stepping in to help. Were the detractors truly that stubborn, or was it simply willful ignorance?

Looks fantastic! It's not finished, so I wouldn't worry too much about the emptyish overworld yet.

I also think the point they were trying to make was how huuuge the world was and that it was open for exploration. Point taken.

It's defintely going to be a bit controversy among the fans about the open-world thing, but what zelda game hasn't caused a bit of controversy?

Holy shit! What is this witchcraft? Nintendo are geniuses, making a game look this good on the Wii U. They just keep delivering!

It was just dumb thinly veiled "Nintendo is incompetent/ cheap" horseshit.

Remember those "Oh the noes, I hope Zelda U won't be top down like ALBW ???!!!???"

I suppose you have a point there. I feel a bit better

Yeah, to be honest the same thing happened with Skyward Sword too. It looked really bland at first but at E3 2011 it finally looked interesting when they showed off the dungeons and some more inspired art direction.

It's pretty wild how quickly Nintendo can develop their content once they're into the final year of development.

Can someone tell me the strengths of the zelda franchise? Ive only ever played a little of windwaker and tp but to me it seemed like a very simple action game with puzzles and basic story. Is that all there is to the franchise

Of course bro, nobody is implying there won't be "more to do." There were insects and animals and fruits and stuff in Twilight Princess overworld, but it was still a barren, empty thing that was completely uninteresting to travel around.
I loved riding through TP's world on Epona's back. Not because there was something special to do during that time, but because it conveyed very well the feeling of freely riding a horse in an atmospheric, memories-filled world - 'here I fought this guy, there I hurried on that quest, and over there is my favourite sunset vista place'.

It has no strengths. We play it out of pity.

What's your favourite adventure game?

This game looks great. I hope it's interesting enough and plays well. It's probably going to be one of the best looking games on the system.

The climax of the Zelda series have been about one thing and one thing only (and fwiw, the climax of most game series have been the same): Discovery.

After watching this demo and knowing Nintendo's track record I've already seen enough to buy this day 1. At this point it makes sense just to avoid all future videos and impressions to maximize my surprise when it's in my hands.

It's almost as if the game is a year away from release.

Talking about how it looks to be designed, not the progress of the game.

Well they're not exactly going to show that off, are they?

Not what I meant. I meant the emptiness risks a chance of the design towards discovery being lost. Lots of open plains and basic wooded areas. It can easily become just guideposts in an empty world where discovery feels like hand holding, or incredibly contrived areas that discovery is more a lottery than something you stumble upon.

All I'm saying is that doesn't make me confident in their open world implementation as of this. Simple as that.

The game is in development meaning its not finished and people are already whinging?

A couple hours ago you didn't even know the demo existed, now suddenly everyone is an expert? What the fuck is going on.

Speculation, conjecture and know it alls.

It was always about discovery and puzzle-solving and using minor action to transition between these, but then occasionally with great boss fights.

But whatever it used to be Nintendo has been heavily emphasizing that they're breaking the norm of Zelda with this game.

It would be cool if the game is set between Skyward Sword and Ocarina, seeing Hyrule when it's 'new' would be great.

This is really exciting simply because it seems that nothing is off limits for the Zelda series anymore. The Magic Meter making a return also makes me very happy.

I'm going to assume it's due to the game still being in development and because they still seem to be keeping a lot under wraps. There were lots of sudden cuts in the video, which would indicate they cut out the good stuff. Also with such a tiny preview, it's hard to make out a lot of detail. Even the grass looks flat in that video, when we know that it really isn't.

If that's all you got out of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess the series just isn't for you.

I'd say its biggest strength is the feeling of exploration and discovery.

....yup. That's it. Question solved.

The most revolutionary part of the demo?

That horses don't naturally run into trees, so why should they in the game.

Looks incredible, the map looks insane from that small glimpse.

Can't wait to start the adventure in a small cottage or something with no equipment and to wonder off to the huge world that opens up for you. There's going to be so much to explore and see, we're talking about Nintendo here, they know how to craft their games. No worries at all that the game world seems a bit empty at the moment (in terms of wild life, enemies and such, the rest seemed to be just fine). The gameplay trailer is clearly from a point where you've already progressed quite a bit, so of couse they wanted to just show how big the world actually is, not what there is to do.

I think it's important to note that this game is at least 11 months away, and there's probably a lot of content in the world they couldn't show because it'd give things away too early (Enemies, enemy barriers, dungeons etc). Wait until a future ND, E3 next year and the game will build upon each previous appearance. The same thing happened with Mario Kart 8 and SM3DW.

That said, the world looks gorgeous (and huge). The clock at the top of the gamepad makes me think they've finally implemented the clock system they wanted to put in Ura Zelda.

I thought it looked fantastic. Nintendo tends to be very coy about details this far from release. I'm not surprised that they haven't shown much in the way of story yet. They've already revealed quite a bit: huge ass world, intelligent horse navigation, gamepad map locating, slow-mo jumping from horses, parachute sail thing from skyward sword, arrows give distinct sound when you hit enemies the right way.

We know there will be dungeons and a hell of a lot more stuff. Give it time. I'm happy to see what we saw. It looks gorgeous.
