Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

Look, I am totally with you that 20m in March is very, very likely. But I do not see that Bloodborne or The Order will be able to move a significant number of additional consoles. And all other games have already been available since November.

Besides, the One's price tag is not the only one back on pre-holiday level. The PS4 was also heavily discounted (due to freebies) but not in the year before. That means that PS4 sales were also pressed forward, resulting in lower sales after the discount. Put everything together and you are up to 2m in Q1 2015.

I think you are wrong in accounts to the PS4 being heavily discounted, besides black friday, there were no tangible pricedrops or increase in value perception. Saying that it was heavily discounted is not appropriate at all.

In fact, most people would say that Sony practically didn't do anything in the months of november and december, besides going through the motions of whats expected of those months, some bundles and a small discount in their black friday deals.

The reason I don't follow that line of thinking is because Microsoft had said in November that they were "shortly" selling 10 million units to retailers. On December 3rd, don't you think they would have said the same thing but with a larger number, such as the one you're suggesting of two million more consoles which would put it at 12 million, going something like "shortly selling into retailers 12 million units"? They instead provided the solid number of 10 million units.

I think they just wanted to wait until the Holiday season was over for the "bigger news." I'm sure they saw some of the negative reactions to the "almost 10 million" as well and probably wanted to wait until they can say that solid figure outright this time. Microsoft can be hard to predict at times.

Remember when everyone thought that because there was no Microsoft PR after Black Friday week that meant that they lost November NPD or it was virtual tie because they usually announce Black Friday sales every year.

They probably didn't say anything partly due to the complaints about them gloating about XB1 tripling in sales/shipped news. I'd imagine they would also want to wait until Sony gave after-Holiday figures before they release their own.

XB1 didn't get a price cut in the UK tho ... and PS4 beat it in December.

Not sure about that.

LOL awesome.

I remember a lot of...

"People will go with Xbox one because they had a 360"

Talk initially. But yeah, the overwhelming majority here figured ps4 would sell more and a lot of guys like me (who were firmly 360 last gen) jumped ship.

lawl. Those people were apparently oblivious to what happened with the PS3. People have short memories I guess.

Apart from the NES after the crash.their significance is dwindling and has been since the 90's.

PlayStation has created more new generations of gamers the past 20 years than Nintendo.

This. As much as I like Nintendo as well, they have been declining on the home gaming console front ever since after NES & hasn't even surpassed it in sales up until Wii came out.

Microsoft is the soul of the gaming industry, without them we would be trapped in a Japan-centric shit hole of an industry.

With the majority of games being marketed towards FPS's & Sports? I don't think so.

You may like them, but not everyone does.

Is it true WiiU is trending behind Dreamcast?
According to Google:
Sega sold 10.6 million Dreamcast consoles between its November 27, 1998 Japanese launch and when the console was officially discontinued in March 2001. In total it was on the market for two years three months...

So yeah, apparently it's still tracking behind it I think and if the Wii U was to have as short a lifespan it would be discontinued in a couple of months. I don't know how many extra consoles Sega sold at $99 or whatever though.

surprised it hasn't hit 20m yet tbh, sales are slowing down quite a bit?

I dont understand this logic. Are people joking when they say this kind of thing? In 4 months, PS4 almost doubled its growth since launch, and sales are slowing down!?

Microsoft made consoles like pc's and almost killed pc as a gaming platform back in the day ( aka one year after 360 came out ~ ) by bringing pc centric developers to the console scene.

Nowadays we have two markets that quite overlaps thanks ( ? ) to MS.

Being an old timer i would have preferred if things remained like in the PS2 days.

but the gamerscore! You'd lose your gamerscore if you'd change the console!

But then again: If you lose your games (backwards compatibility), who cares about the gamerscore?

Sony has done it this generation and I approve because they simply offer the best package.

If I don't mistake XBO was selling faster than 360 (even with the DRM/Kinect/TvtvtvsportsTv/180 fiascos), which sold 80M+ across its lifetime.

XBO is selling slightly faster than 360 only in US (and maybe UK), in every other region it selling worse, a lot worse.

Hmm,

Now is that 10 million sold in or through as of Dec 3? I'm leaning towards sold-through due to estimates putting the Xbox One at sub 10 million sold-through heading into November. November/Black Friday had the Xbox One selling over a million, which would put them right around the 10 million mark.

So I guess it's a 1.85:1 ratio of PS4:XB1?

Ooh, cinematic ratio.
