About Nintendo's decisions on the New 3DS for America

Okay, so basically what I'm seeing in this thread is Nintendo has decided to level U.S. with the rest of the regions they sell the 3DS in and not include an AC adapter. While that seems mildly inconvenient, it's honestly doesn't seem like it's as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be.

U.S. gamers were getting a perk for years, and now we're not getting the perk.

That being said, you can buy an AC adapter for 3DS on Amazon right now for $8.39

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CJTA87A/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Which I plan on doing right now so that way I won't be caught with my pants down if Nintendo runs into some sort of 3DS charger shortage after N3DS releases.

Problem solved.

I'm glad my PS4 and new laptop came with the perk of being able to power them.

I think they went with the right name. "XL" has its own brand equity; it conveys the feature that was so popular in their bestselling 3DS model. Now when people see "New 3DS XL," they know which system it's using as a base. If they dropped the "XL" moniker, some people may think it's a downgrade to the original scale.

Dude, it's not the 'XL' part that's confusing, it's the 'New' that's slapped in front of it.

It should have had 'XL 2.0' or 'XL-B' or something. (It's not saying those are good names, but they are better/clearer names than just slapping 'New' in front of the existing name.)

Think about how confusing that name is for a second...

No AC charger is a million times dumber than not selling the small 3DS, which pretty much no one is actually buying these days.

The choice is nice. Even after the XL came out, I never once thought of abandoning my OG 3DS for it. I was planning to get the small n3DS, but now I won't be getting any n3DS at all since the XL is the only option.

Being able to charge a device that requires charging is a "perk" now?

The problem is it shouldn't be looked at as a perk. It's required for the system to function properly.

Where is your avatar from?

The regular not coming stateside is a slap in the face to parents who want it for their kids. My daughter is 9 and there's no way she can comfortably hold an XL. She tries with mine and it's too uncomfortable.
For those consumers Nintendo has another product for you - it's called the 2DS. ;)

I was not aware the PS4 ran on batteries.
How does that change anything? It's not like the 3DS can work without using a charging cable. It is a requirement.

Are we really making a big fuss over $8?

It appears we are. I just don't see why it's a huge issue. You know, PS2 didn't come with memory cards to save games when it first came out, and we as a culture survived.

I think we'll survive this too.

Are you aware there's an entire series called New Super Mario Bros that sells just fine? Now -there's- a series where the name could get confusing, given there are sequels and everything. Yet it does fine.

I have a usb cable I got for $2 off Amazon that I use to charge this thing from a battery pack so I can collect all the streetpasses at stuff like PAX and MAGfest.

They are easily available.

Right, it's just something I never drew the line to think on is all. I don't think it's cool of them to not include it, but whatever, I guess.

Thinking about it like that, I might pick one up later on. Still no launch buy, for sure, and maybe if I hold out I'll get lucky enough that NoA will release the standard size. Maybe.

Probably not.

If it's not supposed to be a huge issue for us to buy it, why is it a huge issue for Nintendo to include it?

I wasn't aware the PS2 required a memory card to work.

You people who keep using "It's only _____ dollars" excuse, if it's so cheap for you guys, go foot the bill for everyone complaining. It's so cheap.

Truth. I really am sick of owning a fucking seperate charger for every device in my life, there is no reason that USB can't be used for most handheld devices other than the greed of cashing in on proprietary chargers.

USB was not designed for charging batteries. It's a Universal Serial cord. It only carries 5 Volts. And honestly, from a design perspective, you don't want plugs that can easily accept common incorrect cords that could cause damage,

In general, USB wouldn't really satisfactory solve the charging issue for electronic devices. Some devices can get away with it, but in general many devices need their own power supplies, if nothing else, which would make the USB angle moot.

What you really want is the electronics industry to come up with standardized power supplies; the power bricks on the cords. Whether that's feasible, I don't know, since different applications often have different requirements.

Not very different than the Wii U name. Nintendo sucks at differentiating their software platforms from one another. They used to do it well. GBA to GBASP. gameboy to gameboy color. DS to DSLite to DSi. Putting new in front of the name is about as stupid as the U on the Wii U.

Nintendo is making a big deal about something that's probably costing them 20 cents. Why shouldn't we make a big deal about something that costs us 8-10 bucks?

Nintendo is not the first company to cut corners to increase their profit margin, and I can guarantee you they won't be the last.

Now, while I agree this is a minor inconvenience, that's all it is. A minor inconvenience.

Not including a AC adapter with a device that needs one is fucking dumb.

Say what you want, it's just fucking stupid. I mean, I already have a XL and I'll use the one I already have, but it basically makes no sense for all the people that will be new to anything 3DS.

You can't just sell something without the basic thing that makes it work,.

Yeah, we should be thankful to Nintendo for selling us products that actually work outside the box!/s

Fuck the corporate apologist bullshit in this thread.

Fuck the over-reacting hyperbole over people complaining about a <$5 charger. Would everyone be complaining if the N3DS was $5 more expensive with a charger? Probably not, but this alternative is actually better. jesus.

How many other companies release products that cannot be used at all (or no more than a few hours anyways) without paying extra money? Plenty of companies love screwing over consumers but their products are at least fully functional out of the box.

It's really not a huge deal for most of us here but the concept of what they are doing is pretty insulting. The product will not function correctly without this accessory. That is the issue.

Getting a charging cable isn't a perk, it's an expected accesory included with basically any device that can be charged. Nintendo can eat a bag of dicks

You people should calm down. I am not supporting this but they aren't hiding it either. The print on the (EU)-package stating that no charger is included is soooo huge... People that aren't able to see it will need much bigger screens than even the 3DS XL offers ;D

Don Mattrick parachute account spotted! But seriously, if this thing is merely going to offer slight enhancements of games then what is the point? The only exclusive we've seen so far has been xenoblade chronicles. I loved the original as much as the next but this thing looks like a severely downported piece of hot garbage. It's really upsetting. I would of rather they made it a downloadable wii u game. It wasn't THAT ugly, but I'd rather have it stay the same and play with my gamepad than deal with a downport.

Yep. Don't care how cheap it is to get one. I can't think of a single modern electronic device that doesn't come with a charging cable out of the box.

This. If other regions didnt get the ac adapter, that doesnt make it ok for them either. No portable anything released in this day and age should be sold without some method of charging it. Period.

Name all the companies that cut corners by not including the component necessary to make the product function at all.

You'd be surprised how many normal customers wont notice it until after purchase, or even after getting back home.

Really? You've never received a new toy when you were a kid that didn't come with batteries, and required you to buy them separately?

Come on, now we're just getting ridiculous here.

I was mildly interested in buying a n3DS but mostly for the swappable faceplates, I'd like to have a few and swap em around.

Then I find out only the n3DS XL is being sold in America, and it does not support swappable faceplates.

I feel bad for the game designers who work at Nintendo, they come up with these great games and then a bunch of fuckwits around them do everything they possibly can to make sure as few people as possible play them.

I would not be shocked in any way if the big announcement at E3 from Nintendo is that they are launching a new console but you have to power it with solar energy.

What a strange thing for people to defend.

Well, I hope American retailers are prepared for the high % of units that will be returned when customers don't have a charger included and assume that the product they bought is defective.
