Halo: The Master Chief Collection is STILL broken after 100 days

Ummmm I've been getting into matches this entire week

Yep. Rarely having any issues playing with friends or alone at this point. Unfortunately for some reason certain people are still having issues. BTB is the only list that SOMETIMES gives me a minute long search time.

The game certainly isn't broken. its just misbehaving for some people still.

Have you ever experienced the wait times in RTS matchmaking? Or even something as simple as LoL that has millions of players? I said that 7 minutes was the longest I've had to wait and that it was in the lowest populated playlists. When going into the more popular playlists I've usually gotten a match within 45 seconds

I'm sorry that the game is a waste for you, thats an awful experience and I really am sympathetic, I felt the same way when I bought CoD Ghosts to find out it was horrific to play. But how is it 343's fault you bought any of the other products? Particularly when they're used for pretty much everything else on the Xbox.

"I don't have an agenda"
lol

Seems like MCC was a quite a good system seller going by this thread.

Anyway, I think the population is all but dead now even if the game ever get truly fixed. Feel bad for all the Halo fans having issues.

Nobody deserves a broken game, I felt the burn with ACU.

It's crazy that the game is still broken after all this time. I would love to be a fly on the wall at some of the meetings that Microsoft and 343 have had about this game post launch to see what exactly they are saying about it.

It's playable but it's not ideal. You can easily find even teams now and waiting isn't too long most of the time. For me the game is good enough to look past the technical issues but they are a major ininconvenience.

I've recently started playing this again after refusing to play it from the end of November. Matchmaking is still broke for me. If I do manage to get into a game it'll be uneven teams or everyone will quit during the match.

Although I've been mainly playing Halo CE and 2 doing the random achievements like "Complete Two Betrayals on Legendary without picking up a new weapon". That's quite fun and is working fine. The campaign and UI are a lot less buggy for me compared to November. Hopefully the next patch fixes the matchmaking. Really itching to play some Halo multiplayer.

I've been quite vocal at my frustrations with the game, however over the last month or two things seemed to have settled down.

I predominately play in a party of two, and typically now play halo 2 anniversary as its nearly always team slayer and ranked (meaning less quitters).

After we start a match, i'll watch the joining status, if within a minute or two I don't see connecting, or if it goes from connecting back to searching we'll back out and try again. Typically within the first few minutes we'll be in a game.

After playing a game we'll start searching again however if after a maximum of a minute we haven't been joined to another party i'll quit the game, go back to the dashboard and try again. Again 9 times out of 10 we'll be in a game in a minute or two.

In regard to team matching we have found that its normally always balanced teams now, with the occasional player dropping out due to not being able to load the map (haven't seen this error for a few weeks ourselves and its definitely got better).

The biggest (read: pain in the ass) is in game (and party chat if we start it) dropping off after every other game and then magically coming back after a game or two. This is always fixed with an xbox reboot if need be.

In summary, there are bugs but worth persevering for. As working professionals with families our time is short but we get plenty of games in our 1.5 hour evening sessions. If we didn't we'd have gone back to gears 3 or something as we can't spend the evening searching for games.

I like the game and am happy to live with the bugs for now as we get it in and have tons of fun as the game searching seems to now be acceptable speed wise if we stick to quiting out and not waiting in a room for more than a minute. For reference I'm a gamer from the UK.

That's not to say that I'm not waiting for it to get better, I'd ideally liked to play ranked in halo 2\2A\3 slayer games with completely fixed hit box detection in H2 which seems to play the worse.

The population will be too low to ever have an efficient matchmaking system with multiple playlists.

The only way to save the community will be to make the game free, either as a gold reward or a Halo 5 preorder bonus.

It's not completely broken, I've had few issues until I want to do BTB, but it does still have big issues. Their huge patch should be coming soon hopefully.

No need to feel bad for me. I bought it just for the campaigns so after the first few weeks the game was ideal for me. :P

No regrets here!

Yeah. I am pissed as hell that MP doesnt work and I totally get people wanting a refund for it.

But the SP games in one place alone makes it more or less worth it, since thats the reason I got into the series and its still the biggest draw for me. Especially when you throw in ODST.

People who are getting matches, i get that. Im getting matches too. Most are running perfectly fine too. Lag free, no bugs, etc etc.

But thats not why im pissed. Im pissed because MULTIPLE features promised at launch are still missing. As of last week we FINALLY got to the number of playlists the game is supposed to have. All the forge work they did for H2A is useless considering theres no way to really play or find anyones maps. Im still consistently matched with people WAY WAY WAY better than me and WAY worse because ranking STILL isnt in the game. Rosters are still broken.

And if you can get games, thats great, but i bet you cant get games with friends, because parties still basically dont function in MCC.

You could play the single player. But some of the games dont even save your progress. That scoring and speed run system they added? Useless considering the friends leaderboards dont work for any game.

After 100 days, the game is still incredibly broken from what they promised it would be. And to make matters worse, 343 is horrible with its community. Horrible. We get weekly updates that basically just say "still working" for weeks at a time. Betas started and cancelled inexplicably. Frankie will wander over to gaf every few weeks and put out a few fires but good god no one is providing answers no one is actually talking to the community no one is providing any kind of time line, its embarrassing.

Okay, this is my point of view, and it will vary from person to person of course. When this game was announced almost everyone said we are getting Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 with all multiplayers all on one disc for only $60? That is an insane deal. This is the best deal since the orange box. I would pay double that for this game. Take my money. The game ships. MP is broken. Single player has some bugs, but overall the single player has never been an issue. So if you were one that praised this game for being such a value then I don't think you should be one complaining now.

Personally I haven't had an issue with the multiplayer since they released the patch 3 weeks after launch. I know this isn't everyones take on it. Yes there are still issues with the game and what I can infer from 343, they are basically rebuilding the whole MP and Chat portion of this game from the ground up. The outsourced it and it sucked, they are now working on fixing it. It understandably takes time to rebuild something from the ground up.

Yes it is still semi broken for people, but I still feel like everyone thinks its the cool thing to bash 343 for it.

The OH and I had a very good experience playing couch co-op through all four campaigns on sub-Legendary (minus one instance of lost progress due to checkpointing/saving not working). A buddy jumping into our game in Halo 4 via XBL worked fine as well.

Glad we didn't plan on playing the multiplayer portion.

I bought the collection for campaigns. Playing through all four in co-op is some of the best fun I have ever had and this collection is fantastic for reliving the fantastic campaigns. From my standpoint, the game was EXACTLY what I wanted it to be. I've had almost no problems with matchmaking, though I haven't played MP much.

'Results may vary' definitely seems to fit right now. Am dying to see a post mortem on this game and a look into what happened.

If your going to make a thread like this then you should make it a point to elaborate on what's broken to you. Just saying.
  • Halo 2 Classic netcode not functioning correctly even on good connections, sniper and BR inconsistent/ineffective outside of close-mid range.
  • Games ending early/randomly.
  • Advertised dedicated servers not functioning for majority of games.
  • Difficult to impossible to find matches across all playlists with a party.
  • Incorrect player counts in many playlists.
  • Ranks missing from all but one playlist, not functioning correctly in the one playlist they're in.
  • Incorrect/not updated game types and settings for majority of playlists.
  • Major issues with falling through the map in Halo CE.
  • Halo CE hit detection still problematic and inconsistent.
  • Party system and joining fails to work more often than it does work.
  • Various issues with Halo 3.
  • No file share.
  • Uneven teams still occurring.
  • Games ending/failing as soon as they start.
  • Players being randomly disconnected during process of forming game.
  • Various UI bugs including variable names being directly displayed (e.g. $FIND_GAME).
  • Major framerate issues in Halo 2 Anniversary MP, especially on Zanzibar remake.
  • Framerate issues in campaign, split screen experience severely damaged as a result.
  • Dismal player count due to issues.
There's plenty more issues as well. The fact that the netcode is so off for the classic game that was supposed to be honored by this collection is a disgrace. There's more than enough issues here to describe the game as "broken." There's so many issues that even dedicated Halo fans (myself included) won't bother playing it. It's broken.

Some people at 343 or Microsoft absolutely need to lose their jobs over this. The state this game was released in, and the condition it's in 100 days later, is completely unacceptable especially from what is supposed to be a flagship franchise.

These threads always fail to mention the real problem of 343/Microsoft: somehow, somewhere there are a bunch or suits of that demanded that the game was released before the holiday and 343i had no choice but to comply for obvious reasons. Microsoft doesn't even have respect for their biggest franchise, the one that basically defined the brand. They simply threw 343i under the bus and won't even come forth to defend their handpicked team. Being Ms 1st party must be a terrifying position sometimes.
Amen!

Right its obvious the reaction I'm getting in here so this is likely to be my final post on the matter. I do not have an agenda in any of this, I purchased a game that I got my money's worth out of even through its faults, granted my online experience was the same as every one elses at launch and in the weeks and even months since. However for me personally, the game is working albeit still with problems that need addressing. I know that this isn't the case with most people and I reiterate again that I'm sympathetic, but that I simply feel differently about the game.

I started what I said by saying I was going to be called a shill for it and I see now that I was correct. I find it absolutely insane that someone who defends a game that most people find to not meet their satisfaction automatically makes them a shill or a troll. Is it impossible for me to simply have liked the game? Or that maybe I'm just a bit more patient? I never once said that the MCC is fixed or that 343 should stop trying to fix it and I do realize that in particular my comment about trading in the game as a solution was ill thought and wasn't the real point I was trying to make, but thats ok. If you've made your mind up about me it doesn't matter.

At the end of the day, I'm still going to enjoy the game I bought, and thats all that matters to me, so call me what you like.

I'm out

Enjoy whatever you like. No one is saying you can't, they're saying they are having problems that interrupt their enjoyment.

343 released a broken product. Fact. 100 days later, it still doesn't work as advertised. Fact. Ergo, calling them B listers or unprofessional or whathaveyou is entirely legitimate. If you bought a car that had the engine fall to pieces over the course of 100 days, would you be upset? Or would you stick with your attitude of "oh well, they sure tried really hard to get that right. No big deal, swell effort fellas."

Really too bad. Even if it does get fixed soon, the point of no return passed a long time ago. At least for me it did. Most people arent coming back, fixed or not. Damn shame.

I know a lot of people wanted to experience the online portion of the game, but don't forget that there is also a single player component.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend these actions; after all, MCC is what pushed me to get an XbOne, but it's dumb for anyone to say they spent $500 to relive this franchise when the system has other games for it.

In fact, I haven't even been able to finish play the other games because I got all of them in sales and they're open world games like Sunset Overdrive and DAI. Try to see if you can get a refund if you're still not happy, though I doubt it since they have already given away some freebies like that extra month of XBL.

This is crazy I still can't get into matches but I will say that I loved playing a marathon of 1-4 back in november

nah man, just misbehaving, game is fine

last time i played (maybe 2 weeks ago or so??) it was a custom game with friends (which is primarily why we bought this fucking collection) and we had teammates getting randomly switched to other teams, joining issues, not being able to hear people in game chat, and insane lag.

I couldn't imagine a major ip being handled worse than this. MS definitely failed tons of loyal fans. Should just give anyone who still owns this crappy product a credit to use on something else and make the game free with gold.

I returned my copy and my XB1. Still had to eat the cost of my Live subscription though. I wonder if there's anyone still playing Halo 3 on 360.

To those that haven't gotten a refund, keep trying. Be sure to emphasize you've done everything possible on your end to rectify the situation - tell them you installed all patches, reinstalled the game, port forwarded your Xbox, reset your router, etc. This worked for me (I used the online chat).

Why is it dumb? I have a gaming PC to play multi-plats; the Xbox was for exclusives, most notably Halo. If Halo doesn't work, the Xbox is just a $350 paperweight to me.

I'm personally not particularly interested in the other MS exclusives, except maybe Forza and there are plenty of racing sims on PC to fill that void.

For matchmaking you also need to consider the user population, all those trade ins and refunds must have hurt the game, even if the system is working it just bound to take more time to find someone to play with.

They are really under pressure here (343i), I am sure that on their original plan they would have forgotten the MCC by now and just focus on Halo 5, now they have to still put resources into it.

Have had the game since launch and still have yet to be able to play a single BTB match.

The most depressing thing is how badly this jangling to affect the population. Even if they ever get this all fixed (which, to be honest, I doubt will happen) by then the damage will be done.

For everyone saying the game works for them. Try playing with more then one person and tell me the shit is not broken. What good is a Halo game that I cant play with friends or family? If you play halo with randoms it is a terrible experience every time. The game has huge issues. Crashing during map loading screen, party splinting, Thinking your friends are still in your party after it splits everyone so there is no way to invite them back until everyone quits the game, search times with a party are eternal, H2A is the most laggy game I have ever played, ranks are in one playlist that is 5v5 on the smallest Halo map ever made, the game dose not match by skill level, the UI glitches, games will ranomly end before score is reached, some players can load and spawn into a MM game before everyone else and kill people standing still on and on I can go. This is just MM issues. Ya the game works fine.

Will be done? Has been done.

Do we really need a reminder for every day that passes? Yeah it's broken. It's likely not going to get fixed any time soon either.

https://twitter.com/Danayoub

Executive Producer Dan Ayoub's Twitter continues to be a desolate wasteland. He hasn't Tweeted since November 13. He used to Tweet almost everyday for three years prior.

I always thought he was the one going to fall on the sword for this.

It definitely still isn't perfect but I've been having a pretty reasonable experience with it lately.

It's not broken for everyone.

Give me a break, how about the features like file share that aren't even being talked about. Try getting in a party and finding a match. Oh, how about checkpoints?

Just because YOU can find a solo match after 5 minutes doesn't mean the game works.

HOW ABOUT RANKS???

You can say you don't care about these things but that's why people call it broken.

Do we really need a reminder for every day that passes? Yeah it's broken. It's likely not going to get fixed any time soon either.

Yes, I think we do. It's the flagship franchise for Microsoft, and these sorts of problems are becoming a trend in AAA game development (Halo: MCC is just one of the worst offenders).

If you care at all about console video gaming this issue is tremendously important, even if you could care less about the Halo franchise.

Yep. Rarely having any issues playing with friends or alone at this point. Unfortunately for some reason certain people are still having issues. BTB is the only list that SOMETIMES gives me a minute long search time.

The game certainly isn't broken. its just misbehaving for some people still.

With all the fixes and tweaks the entire collection needs they could be doing this all year, so IMO we will never see everything fixed or corrected before they move on to halo 5 launch.

It's a real shame that halo is treated so poorly, a game which made xbox what it is.

IDK if anyone read this last night, but they provided an update.. kinda

While we haven’t yet locked an exact release date of this CU, the work is in its final stages of testing and bug squashing is well underway. The next time we communicate regarding the status of the upcoming CU, we will provide a definitive timeframe for its availability.

More stuff in the update at HALO COMMUNITY UPDATE 2.18.15

Well hopefully this means next week we will get a 'timeframe' of when the CU will come out for MCC. I wanna play again without any worry about MM issues really... but then again i think about how amazing halo 5 is and.... i don't want to play :(

They have basically been saying this since the week they announced the beta. No info on Ranks or file share though...

The game is still worth it for the 4 single player campaigns. There's a sale on it this weekend on xbl for 60% off for $24, a perfect price for the game in its current state.

I'd say yes. If you ever wanted to experience the master chief saga in whole. Go for it.

Plus 343i are still working on the MM issues i suppose. It'll be fixed soon enough.

I have realized there is nothing Microsoft can do about this collection to satisfy everyone. To me, Single player works and matchmaking needs to be faster with ranking added. That's it.

For others who spend says posting about white balance issues and what I consider to be minor PC vs console version differences, I can't imagine they will be happy for a long time. There is a new attitude about this game that will fester, no matter what is fixed, someone will rage over something they find broken.

People have every right to be annoyed. Part of the problem with the underlying issue is its inconsistency. You're having a good experience. We have players who don't encounter any issues at all (outside of long matchmaking times) but plenty of players encounter real issues. That underlying weirdness is what we're fixing and what's at the root of the vast majority of the problems. Untangling it and re-engineering it was vastly more complicated than we expected.

Again one day I hope we can do a tech post-mortem - but the big fix is making rapid progress. In the meantime, people who're having engative experiences have every right to bitch. I support them in this.

Not death threats though.

I'd like that. I would love to know what went down.
Hope this next patch does the trick.

Very very very nice read about the whole 100 days thanks to Beyond.

Really details the whole situation.

That is an amazing detail of the entire MCC saga and a must read for anyone interested in the MCC debacle. I am very frustrated with all the matchmaking issues (I still can't get in a match), but I am at least having a lot of fun going through the campaigns on legendary with online coop.

I recently was gifted 1 month free xb live the other day and didn't even know this was part of MS's "compensation package" for all the issues with MCC. I was also unaware that we will be getting Halo 3: ODST for free [soon along with a remake of Rival for H2A. Too bad you had to play before Dec. 19th to get these benefits since the MP is still broken to this date.

I still feel I got my money worth in the end and am foolishly hopeful the next CU will fix MM.
