before people come in all "bu-bu-but underground rappers!":

this is such an insane album for a mainstream rapper to put out. Seems like such a "fuck you" to the industry...makes Yeezus almost seem tame in comparison.
Don't give Kendrick or Kanye more credit than they deserve.

Mortal Man got me like....and I don't even smoke anymore...

You gotta appreciate a song like this.

No body even wants bangers. We'd just not like to wade through shit like U and for free while we put up with mediocrity like institutionalized.
A 16 song album and you're going to complain because of an interlude and one track that is obviously a one off? Album is fantastic overall and was a huge risk for Kendrick to put out after GKMC. Hopefully he gets the kind of credit and reception he deserves for this, we need more guys going against the grain like this.

Album so good 2pac came by the studio to talk to Kendrick.

That being said...To Pimp a Butterfly is more of a personal album than a typical album which hits me the most as a fan of music. One thing I appreciate about Kendrick is how dude manage to bring diversity in his music, meanwhile deliver a banger or two for the radio.

This album is going to be treated the same way Me Against the World, It Was Written, Reasonable Doubt, The Truth, and Soul on Ice got treated, Overlooked and misunderstood at first...but as time progress it'll be respected.

I can see this getting amazing critical reception. No idea about how your average joe is gonna take it.

...I need to give Section.80 another chance.

I'm feeling some type of way Kendrick didn't include Untitled and that dope ass instrumental before "I" came on...

Not surprised the track with James Fauntleroy is one of the best on the album. His work is always fantastic.

I imagine the general masses will be shitting on this, there's no commercial bangers really.

Pretty amazed that the Colbert track was made just for the show. It's too good to not show up somewhere in the future, imo.
This is the biggest disappointment for me, that song was amazing. If we never get a studio version, that will be pretty disappointing.

I'm the biggest Kendrick fan boy and so far I'm not feeling it all that much and it's destroying me.

Gonna listen to it all day and pray to God it grows on me, cause I can't imagine not liking a Kendrick album

I just don't understand why he could have threw the TDE posse on this album...it would have work.

Groovy ass Q doing his thing, ab soul will ab soul, Jay Rock will kill it, and Isiah would have went in for a bit.

Off first impressions it falls short of GKMC.

Which in ways is....unsurprising.

But...I dig it. I ain't trashing it by any means.

Let me listen some more before I post impressions.

But Hood Politics and How Much a Dollar cost are def <3

now I'm debating whether or not I want to spend $300+ on bonnaroo tickets to see him. Rest of the lineup is kinda meh to me

But why? Kendrick only gave Jay Rock a feature on GKMC which although ironically (being autobiographical) is also a lot more universal compared to how off center this is.

It's his show.

How do you guys compare MM to Sing About Me?

I know the latter isn't the end track but...the song long as shit lol

i actually like dying of thirst more than sing about me even though both are legitimately great.

but i'm thinking mortal man is even better. these lyrics are what i needed to hear from rap tbh

I don't see the comparison at all except both are long songs lol.

I would say this is more on a Real comparison because both ended the album perfectly and had some reflective type of moments.

I wouldn't personally.

As much as I like an artist.

It kept me from going to see Kendrick in Arizona over the weekend.

But that's just me. If it was the Black Hippy crew, I'm THERE. Saw Kdot perform in 2013. It was sweet. everybody yelling yawk yawk yawk yawk together was fun as hell lol.
