I really want to listen to this but my right ear has had some serious wax building up inside it, and listening to music isn't very enjoyable right now. I hope there's a track as good as dying of thirst on this album.

I like Cole's heart but dude is such a simplistic rapper. Kendrick is on another level artistically. Cole's entire career approach seems like something he wrote on a sheet of paper as a 15 year old rap stan.

Need to listen to the album a couple of more times to give my full thoughts on it, but so far it's pretty amazing. However, I still think GKMC >

This.

I just don't understand the J Cole hype.I tried to listen to his last album and even his mixtapes but dude forever escapes me with those benadryl bars.

First impression: Its gonna be so fun to really dive into this album. Lots of stuff going on, lots of great lines. I wasn't too big into his earlier stuff, I liked it but it wasn't something I'd spin regularly, but this is really fantastic.

It's a deep album. Probably too deep to be popular, but I hope so. I am thinking that I need to sit down with the headphones and listen to the album several times to get it all. I haven't felt like that about an album in awhile. I am sitting at my desk at work in my 3rd listen already. This is a powerful album.

Outside of Born Sinner, Cole's had a pretty bad solo career. Sales always make up for it though and I was a fan on "Let Nas Down" too until you realize how whiny it comes off in repeated listens.

I appreciate "For Free?" for what it is, it's a whole other case if it were an actual track.

Fuck, this CD is phenomenal. Seriously. There sounds on it are so diverse and Kendrick really let's his delivery shine through. Theater way he raps is akin to an actor giving lines. He really tries to reflect his feelings when he raps and he does like it nobody else. Gonna have to listen again tonight.

Think I've settled on How Much A Dollar Cost and The Blacker The Berry as my two favourite tracks, both up with Sing About Me as the best songs Kendrick's put out.

I love pretty much everything about Hood Politics too. The beat is incredible, the third verse is one of the best on the album and the hook is kinda dumb in a way I really enjoy. I get the impression its quite deliberate, too, more than a hint of sarcasm to it. That's kinda the point of the song, no?

On my third listen so far. Like this better than both good & 80. This album much more wavey then expected. Pissed that they put a different version of 'I' on here though. Gonna have to fix that in the near future.

yeah I agree. I tried hard to get into cole but he is just missing something for me. lord knows I love to rep stuff from my home state but I just can't with him.

Cole is firmly planted in his lane. I wouldn't shit on the dude, he's done nothing to warrant it other than be approachable by what I'd imagine is the greater mainstream audience. Not hitting him up for cunning or innovative lyricism or beats, but he's just there like a rock doing what he does and it's clearly going well for the dude. Safe is what I'd call Cole. That inevitably leads to boring after enough spins, but it is what it is.

Don't understand the Cole hate.

His fans are the worst...well some of them.

He could come out with a song about putting the trashcan to the side of the road and dudes would think he channeled Biggie Smalls. I remember one dude wanted to get in a heated argument with me because I didn't care for Born Sinner.

Shits disgusting

Way to go people, misinterpret my post for the sake of misinterpretation

What I meant was that GKMC sounds more like it was made with the typical "receive beat -> write text/think of text -> record -> next one" structure than TPAB does. To me, TPAB sounds like it was made with much more care and with much more people involved.

I'm not saying rappers are not musicians, that's just Courage trying to derail my post because I don't like Young Thug and Rich Gang in general

your original post was correct
which makes this one ironic lol because GKMC definitely does not sound like it was conceived how you just put forth given its interconnectedness

First Impression: Love this album. There are some tracks that may be hard to swallow here but I appreciate them. The album really is a celebration of blackness, and its reflected in every song. I appreciate the album being preachy, yet easy to listen to. As opposed to someone like Lupe that hides meaning under metaphor on top of weird reference on top of double entendres.

The problem with Cole is that his mixtapes showed amazing promise, with Friday Night Lights being his absolute peak.

And from there he never actually grew as an artist.

Going on a 3rd spin right here. The album as a whole is absolutely amazing. Kendrick has shown tremendous growth in his style and lyricism. All that with deep and smart use of subject matter. This is definitely in my top 10 hip-hop albums. Better than Section 80 and GKMC.

I'm also very happy about Rapsody dropping a verse. Hopefully, Complexion (A Zulu Love) gave her exposure. IF YOUVE BEEN SLEEPING ON RAPSODY! GO LISTEN TO HER MIXTAPES/ALBUM! BEST FEMALE RAPPER OF THIS GENERATION.

After giving it three listens, I'm still not sure about how I feel overall with this album. His last two albums had a lot of tracks that just grabbed me off the bat, but the only songs that did that for me here were King Kunta, Alright, and How Much A Dollar Cost. After a few repeated listens, Mortal Man and Hood Politics grew on me. I also seem to be coming around on u.

Outside of The Blacker the Berry, the rest of the album just doesn't seem to do much for me. I appreciate him trying something new, but I'm gonna have to stick with B4.DA.$$ as my album of the year at this point.

Wesley's Theory, How Much A Dollar Cost and Mortal Man are instant classics. That's not diminishing the rest of the album, but those three...

Damn

Is i actually live? The crowd sounds fake/added in.

I think it was recorded with live instrumentation/a band, rather than the beat that the single had, but I don't think it was from a stage performance.
