Yes if you want to platinum the game, and get to experience a pretty good boss fight.
And man, the lore behind the last boss is amazing.

That is what I got out of the BB's lore after fighting this boss.

I'd like to know this too. Feel like I should finally be able to use these things at this point in the game.
The path is to the right past the first guy carrying a big wooden cross
You need a certain item. Go through the zone on the left side of
Ameila's door. Head right if you awaken from the grand cathedral.

Ok, see I didnt know that because "arcane" is a different stat than fire/bolt. If thats true i guess its something I can focus on in NG+ because no one will focus on arcane in the main game because nothing scales with it early on, right?

I find it amusing people give up around 5 or 6 tries against some bosses/areas. As someone who beat every Souls game more than once, I'm sitting at around 20 tries on V

Caryll runes, I got one like 5-6 bosses in I think.
I think after the Witch you get the tool? Then go back to the house in Hunters dream and equip.
I see her being a wall for a bunch of people. I found her easier than BSB lol.
She was second hardest for me after blood starved beast

Finished the game at roughly 48 hours. Level 82. Missed a lot of optional stuff for sure.
Worst thing about this game so far: When you beat the final boss, you immediately begin New Game Plus. I had gone through the entirety (I think) of the Nightmare Frontier and had the shortcuts open to the boss. But decided not to do the boss and instead went and fought the final boss. I didn't think I'd lose access after winning. Now I get to play the game again just to do get to the parts I didn't see. Dark Souls II handled this better by letting you start NG+ yourself when you were ready.
Great game though. A lot more memorable than DS2, but none of the bosses that I fought were quite as interesting as the best bosses from DS1.

What should be my secondary weapon?

I find that you can zip around and kill the ranged dude pretty easily without getting hit. Just keep circle dodging into him, swipe once and get out.
Then make sure you get the other two dudes low, but don't kill one and leave the other at full health. You want them both super low so you can finish them off one after the other - otherwise you have to deal with very annoying and hard to dodge aoe stuff as the last man standing gets a pretty insane buff and new attack.

That's the reason I used shields in the ails games. They nailed THOSE perfectly. Also, I'm not good enough (or you know, I'm lazy, because I had to adjust here and I did fine and am about to finish it). But yeah, there is a element of actually enjoying those big hits on a shield in the souls games for a lot of us, it's not just that we are big pussies

How the hell am I supposed to beat this guy? I'm at 70 insight so that might play a part in it - will it be a lot easier if I drop it down a bit?

Especially fuck fighting those guys u are having trouble with though
I can tell you one thing, it's no joke on NG+. Enemies still hit SUPER hard. Very easy to be overwhelmed. I died a few times to trash mobs because I didn't expect to be dealing with so many at once and accidentally leashed aggro once or twice.

The path to the right will be open later on in the game.
Go to where you find these two giants in this circular graveyard. There's a door you need to go through.
Parry. Parry. Parry. Visceral attacks do a tonne of damage on him.
And then backstep dodge twice his following melee moves and R1 attack once immediately he gets his "below a certain threshold of hp" buff and can't be parried anymore.
The backstep and R1 attack is actually super useful against a lot of enemies - it lets you dodge their initial salvo and then re-position yourself immediately (and in correct range) for a quick swipe.

if you watched the ritual cutscene after Amelia you can enter forbidden woods. Go down the stairs from the circular area with the 2 big axe dudes and explore, you should find it

through go all the way down the stairs from Vic lamp, open the bottom gate if you haven't. Cross the field with two axe giants and go to the opening/door on the right from where you entered. then go left and keep going down stairs
