GTA V PC Performance Thread

Could FPS drops be related to Steam overlay? I've been playing Dying Light recently, and every time either an achievement pops or a friend comes online, the game defaults to 30FPS all the time the overlay is on screen. As soon as it disappears, back to 60 it goes.

My guess is all issues are tied to Rockstar's DRM though, as people were showing high CPU utilisation from that thing even when the game was just downloading let alone playing it! Spikes in CPU activity from that could be tanking those on borderline CPUs that have less overheads.

I'm playing at 1440 on a 1080 monitor and using FXAA and aliasing isn't too noticeable. Depending on how much GPU power you've got to back it up, you could probably push the res a bit higher (3200x1800, or 2880x1620 perhaps?) with some FXAA or SMAA to get little aliasing with a good framerate.

That's what I'm doing, looks great like that. Only annoying thing is that the Steam Overlay doesn't play nice with DSR.

The games running great on my i3770k and 2x670 2gb @1080p. I ran into one issue though. If anyone would know what setting would lower the bloom (i think that's what the effects called), I noticed at certain times of day in the right light when i'm in a white car it glows. I'll try to get a pic next time I see it. I messed around with brightness and a couple other graphics settings, even checked settings on my monitor, but it's still there. Not a big deal but a little distracting.

I've got the 59Hz issue too, (this is connected to a plasma which doesn't support 59Hz).

Am I right in thinking this is what's causing the regular, steady dropped frames? It feels exactly like Mario Kart 8 vs CPU races if anyone can relate to that.

I was having CTD issues earlier on, but they've pretty much stopped. Now, instead of CTD, there's a small freeze for a few seconds, but it really doesn't matter to me.

Like some of you, I had no issues when I first started playing but I've put in about 12 hours and the frequency of crashes slowly started to increase.

It seems to be a memory leak issue where for a couple of seconds the RAM usage just goes insanely high and then quickly back down. I set larger virtual page files on each of my disks and that fixed the problem, or rather, put a band-aid over it.

Also, pcgamingwiki suggests that you put the program in compatibility mode for Win 7 and to Run as Admin. Hopefully that helps some CTD issues.

I'd take the random/rare freezes over the random/rare CTD.

Have you been using that .bat file to launch the game where it kills the GTALauncher.exe? I found out that was the cause of my crashes. The game does a check every now and then through the launcher and if it's not running it crashes the game.

I am currently using this instead now to lower CPU usage by the launcher process.

Code:
start steam://rungameid/271590
timeout 60
wmic process where name="GTA5.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
wmic process where name="gtavlauncher.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"
wmic process where name="subprocess.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"

Do you have an integrated GPU on your CPU? If so, try disabling it in the bios. That seems to be the problem for most people if the launcher crashes.

I had a feeling this might be the cause of a rather strange error I was getting where the game was reporting a disk error via event viewer. It didn't do it before I stopped closing the launcher and it hasn't done it since I stopped closing the launcher.

I will give your code a go to lower the usage instead.

Edit: I have just run the batch file but the launcher priority is stil showing as normal when I open task manager. If I manually try and change the priority of the launcher it says access denied.

Anyone have a batch file for killing GTALauncher through RSC?

I don't think it is wise to kill it as the post I have quoted (above) and from my own experience suggests that closing it can cause crashes.

My quoted post above contains information for lowering the priority of the launcher though.

Anybody else have an issue with some of the grass textures flickering on and off? It's almost like it's switching between ultra and high by itself.

Yeah, I can not maintain 60FPS with a single Titan X, even with Advanced Graphics Options off with any form of MSAA(x2) in this case. Go country side, even with grass on very high, I'm dipping. And driving in the city makes it a problem. I don't know- maybe it's my CPU, or a 8GB Ram issue- but no can do.

Time of day seems to make the biggest difference. Moreso than countryside. At night in the city it's butter smooth 60fps no drops at all, hardly any jaggies. During the day it's pretty jaggy unless you're downsampling from 1440p or higher w/Nvidia smoothing or MSAA 4x and above and the framerate is good but with drops while driving around the city.

At sunset the framerate seems like it drops in 1/2. Like tons of sunset rays reflecting off everything and bringing down the framerate. It's like going into the countryside but worse from what I'm experiencing.

Countryside seems to depend on grass level. On very high or Ultra the framerate gets hit hard once you go out into the mountains with foilage. On high or lower it seems like 60fps it pretty smooth.

This is on a 980 at 1080p everything maxed except advanced graphics tab is all off, soft shadows are down to just softer and reflection MSAA is off and grass down to "high".

A misadventure in overclocking, and subsequently in correctly identifying my PSU as the real culprit, has turned my 2500k into a 4790k. Looking forward to getting it all running later today and see if I get a performance boost. With my 2500k, the CPU was running 100% at all cores most of the time, so I hopefully should expect to see some improvements.

Huh, for me I get frame drops at night. I assumed it was the car headlights casting all those shadows.

Stable 60 FPS seems to be an issue but I don't mind too much, at worst I get down to 35-40 FPS sometimes in some areas (around Michael's house seems pretty slow for example)

I tweaked down some stuff but my CG is still getting up to 70°C :( It's already so hot out there I don't need a heater in my room lol

Hey ho ! I paid 60 $ for a game that doesn't launch. Great work Rockstar !

sanstitreqcuob.jpg

Fix your shit ASAP !
Solved the issue !

Apparently it was related to the classic special characters in account username issue even though I don't have any in my account username :D
It created a weird file in my AppData folder like this :

sanstitre6bud8.png

So I downloaded the asian launcher linked above. I was then able to log in and download the final update !

... And then it said « The Rockstar update service is unavailable (code 2).». Googled some more and found this. Bingo, MacType (a japanese software to render fonts with FreeType like in MacOs/Linux) was conflicting with RSGC so I just closed it and now the game launches fine *

All the issues with special characters in account name are supposed to be addressed by a patch that should be out today though
Hope this was helpful

* EDIT : ahah now the game crashes when entering Story mode saying « Failed zlib call ». Meaning something got corrupted during the download. I just verified the game cache with Steam and it's redownloading another 3.4 GB to replace the corrupted files I guess. If you don't own the Steam version you need to md5 each data file like this. The joys of PC gaming !

Hopefully I'll be able to play for the first time in 1 hour

I'm interested if it makes a big difference. I actually had a 4790k + mobo in newegg shopping cart but decided to wait for skylake and overclocked my 2500k to 4.8ghz. Let us know how your new cpu works out.

I hope to have it up and running after work today,so I will report back then. My initial plan was waiting for Skylake as well, because I thought the performance of my 2500k was pretty good. I was running with a conservative oc of 4.2ghz, and was experimenting with going higher when everything went to hell.

I think the performance is solid (GTX 770 2GB, Phenom II X 965). With everything on "normal" I'm able play at 4k with 40FPS in average. And even on "normal" GTA V looks good. But that's just for the performance since I'm rather playing at 1080p and higher details for roughly 40 - 60 FPS.

I like scalability of the graphics.

This is what makes me feel like A) The graphics options are future proofed for upcoming hardware or B) Rockstar spent most of their time optimising for mid/lower end hardware and the higher options are not optimised whatsoever and they just thought that people could brute force them or C) They did a poor job testing the game (which is unthinkable considering the delays)

The game looks good even without the advanced settings but I am of the opinion that when developers release games on PC they should be aiming for stable sixty on currently released cards at the highest settings at x2 any form of aliasing.

translation: they should limit the settings scaling so that I can feel better about my hardware

Nothing wrong with future hardware settings in pc games, wether the best setting your pc can handle is is called ultra or 'haha your pc sucks you are a wiener' has no effect on how it looks while playing.
It's just an arbitrary name for a specific setting.

Every game should have the dials go all the way up to 11

Didn't know where else to put this but I just did a video at 4k 30fps for youtube with all the settings maxed (other than x2MSAA) on my GTX 980/3970X and it held solid 30fps other than a dip to 28fps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBcR86FLnA8

I think if I remove the x2 MSAA and just use FXAA I could easily maintain 4k at 30fps.

That video is pretty impressive :) Great work - and thanks for the performance information.

I completely agree. As a long-time PC gamer, one've the things I always look forward to when I build a new rig/upgrade is how it'll run games on their extreme settings - that I couldn't do before. One great example is the classic Doom 3 warning popup telling you that you need at least half a gig of VRAM to run it properly. I always thought that was so badass, and it was quite awesome going back to the game years later and maxing it out to oblivion. The Witcher 1 had a cool option too; I believe it was 'ubersampling'. That was crazy demanding at the time of release.

Amen to that. I understand downgrades for console but it doesn't make sense on PC. That's a reason why people own a gaming PC. Scaling to their respective hardware. And If one spend thousands of Euros because that's what he likes, cranking up the graphics as an enthusiast, the PC (or software) should give one the option.

Awww man, those graphics. I wish I could play it like this. Thanks for that! Dropped a like.

You should try using Custom Resolution Utility. It solved this problem for me. You download it, run it and create a profile with the exact same settings you are running now (1920x1080x60, for example). Then you delete your current resolution and activate the new one. If you're running an NVIDIA GPU, remember to tick the "Custom extension block" option. You use restart.exe to restart the graphic driver and it should be go to go.

I'm getting really good performance with an 4.4 GHz i5 2500K and SLI 680x2. It's locked at 60 with most settings at Very High or near.

The only issue I have is that shadows have a very, very low draw distance. I tried setting them to Very High, but it doesn't work. It's as if the AF wasn't applying to shadows. Has anyone found a solution to this issue? I know others were experiencing it too.

Sorry to quote myself, but I haven't seen any solution for this issue. Any idea, anyone?

Strange that so many people are having issues with the game crashing etc. Thankfully, I'm having none of those issues.

Differing setups and configurations: This is why it is good to look in the event viewer at the Windows Logs/Application and Windows Logs/System lists to see if the application crash coincides with a system problem e.g. GPU driver crash, CPU instability.

Doing this has helped me diagnose what the problem has been. Closing the launcher has caused crashes too; advice on Reddit was given to close it to free up resources. I would advise against closing it as it seems to bring about crashes; perhaps needing to verify the game periodically? I have got some rather exotic errors off the back of this (or a bloody big coincidence).

As i don't have an SSD drive (and not enough budget to get one) i was thinking an alternate way to get rid of any streaming issues i get from my slow mechanical drives.

How about a 64GB USB 3 disk? Some of those (like Sandisk Extreme) seem to be much faster than mechanical drives. Still, not as fast as an SSD but it should be fast enough to eliminate streaming stutter/pauses. What do you think?

Also, will the game even fit in that drive?

Is it just streaming issues or can it also cause stuttering? I have noticed that the frame rate drops I get disappear at the exact same spot after about a second or two.

We all have a line that we won't cross. For me, it's MSAA. I tried FXAA and no AA, but the blurriness / jaggies kill the image for me, so MSAAx2 + MLAA is non-negotiable. I dropped DoF because I don't like it so hopefully that saved a few frames, and dropped shadows to High which seems to have brought up my nighttime frame rate back above 60.

Game looks absolutely incredible at all times of day. Really impressed with it, especially after the watercolor blur-fest that was GTA4.

I would not recommend messing with USB drives for games. Just save for a SSD.

I don't know. All i can say is that i get some random pauses that look similar to stutter but they are more annoying because they are actual pauses (the frame stays still for a 1/4 of a sec) instead of just skipping a few frames. This cause me to lose control of my car sometimes, unlike normal stutter/frame drops because it messes with timing.

I don't know if its a streaming issue or not. Sometimes i get a lot of these, other times it's rare. Yesterday i was playing for a few hours with almost no pauses and when i got a new car and started driving in a new area it started doing these pauses like crazy, it was unplayable. It shouldn't be a RAM issue as i have 16GB. It shouldn't be a VRAM issue either as i haven't maxed it out (it's close but it's not maxed out).

Is it just me or do beards and some of the hair look really bad in this game? It's like they have no proper lighting. They're also the worst when it comes to aliasing.

Been playing the game for the last two days and the performance is a little bit over the place.

Im playing the game all maxed out (1440p 4x MSAA, FXAA) on a titan x and a 5820k. In the city im usualy in 50+ fps most of the time and around 30 in the countryside, some times it dips below that.

The strange thing is that the gpu utilization in the country side and sometimes in the city hovers around 80% while the cpu sits in 50% utilization. There is definitly some room for improvement when it comes to improve performance via drivers\game patching.

I have occasional pauses like this - it'll hitch for a second or so and I have a Samsung 850 Pro SSD. I don't mind though, it's very infrequent.

So it's not a streaming issue since you have like 10x the speed of my storage devices.

Personally, i find it very annoying even if it happens like once every minute. If it was just normal stutter i would be fine but the pausing cause me to lose control when i drive around.

How much does one of those cost? Aren't they almost the same price as a cheap 120GB SSD, but with slower transfer speeds?

Not sure. Reading your posts it seems you get multiple pauses in a row? For me it'll just pause once, perhaps every few minutes. Doesn't matter how fast or slow I'm driving.

My suspicion is it's data being shuffled around, either from disc to RAM or perhaps RAM to V-RAM (I have 8GB RAM by the way).

Yeah, mechanical drives do not seem to be the cause of the stuttering. It also happens on my SSD. I have noticed that when I experience this stutter, all four cores of my 3570K seem to be at 90% load or more. In areas where the load is only around 70% I don't notice stutter as much.

So it could be a CPU bottleneck. But at the same time my 970 is constantly at that critical 3300GB VRAM usage. It could be the dreaded 970 3.5GB VRAM swapping.

Sometimes i get one pause every few minutes. Other times i get one every 20-30 seconds. Other times i get a few pauses in a row. other times it's clean for long enough to make me forget about it. It's also more rare in the countryside but more frequent in the town.

You say it maybe is a RAM/VRAM issue and that makes sense but i have 16GB system RAM, my page file is on a different disk than the one the game is installed and i have about 1990 something VRAM allocated of the 2048 of my card.

Maybe i should allocate even less VRAM? I don't want to sacrifice any more details but i could use 720p instead of 1080p but with 2x AA this time (will it be lighter than 1080p without AA?)

It could be the dreaded 970 3.5GB VRAM swapping.
It happens with my 960 too though.

What are your VRAM numbers? On my 970 it starts out with 2400GB and slowly creeps up to 3300GB and then permanently stays there.
I use around 1990-2010 MBs out of 2048 my card has, according to what the in-game slider says, if that's what you are asking. I don't have a benchmark tool to test while gaming.

Do you get stutter (skipped frame/frames) or pauses (frame freezing but not skipping)?

Anyone else there playing the the game with a bit older GPU's and CPU's that have good advices on graphical settings for the game? I'm playing the game with i5 2500k CPU and a GTX570 card, and while I think I have an acceptable framerate and better looking graphics then on PS3, I'm interested to see how much I will be able to tweak it further.

It could just be a placebo but the game seemed to be running super well after launching it using this batch file:

Code:
start steam://rungameid/271590
timeout 60
wmic process where name="GTA5.exe" CALL setpriority "high priority"
wmic process where name="gtavlauncher.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"
wmic process where name="subprocess.exe" CALL setpriority "idle"

... Until I had a GPU driver crash after less than an hour of play :( GTA please, I just want to enjoy you.

A good tip for those who don't know, the 'quick save' in your characters' phones is literally a quick save. I had assumed it would be weird and warp you back to the nearest bed once you reloaded but it actually works properly. It'll save your exact position and vehicle when you're free roaming so you can use it to set up stunts or to stop playing at any time.

Of course in my case it didn't help since my crash was during a mission, but it's still good to know. I'm not sure if other GTA games have had a quicksave before.
