Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

The 2015 Vizio M series are in and I think we have a bang-for-buck winner for gaming tvs:

They have a wide variety of sizes, 4K resolution, local dimming 18.5 millisecond input lag (perfect for gaming) and best of all, they are reasonably priced!

Again, these tvs have been tested with the Leo Bodnar device to have 18.5ms input lag, which would make them better than all the 2014 Sony's, save the (much more expensive) W950B, which was tested at a similar 17.8ms input lag.

I have the Vizio P Series, the 70 inch. It is an awesome TV and I got it for a great price. Look out for deals on those too. Extremely low input lag, vivid colors, and deep blacks.

Sounds really good, that's more zones than the Sharp Elite, which many reviewers have touted as the best LCD of all time. And more than double the zone count of Samsung's top offering.

If it's priced right Vizio could end up being a major competitor in the high end market this year.
A list price went up earlier " by mistake " showing $4k for the 65". Was removed however.

Hey all, couple things:

1. Is the Sony KDL60W855BBU a good TV? The W8's are pretty good lag wise right?
2. What's a good price for one? They're currently going on Amazon for £999, but they're on lightning deal later on.

Thanks!

The debate now is whether that $4K list was higher or lower than the pending MSRP.

UNDER $4K = an immense bang for buck compared to the flagship Sony and Samsung offerings. If Panasonic launches their 2015 flagship at $4k as well (cx850)....there is going to be allot of choices for consumers and don't be surprised if the JS series pricing takes a nice price cut when the competition launches.

Is there any idea when these will be released? I'm hoping to take advantage of a deal on my new credit card to spend at least $1000 and get $200 back, plus a year of amazon prime, but I need to make the purchase by May 16th.

Panasonic Professional Plasma televisions are considered top of the line in color correction and post production industry. The quality is there even in consumer models. I use one at home for watching movies and playing games. Sadly plasma seems to be getting phased out.

It's pretty much gone in the states. NIB is going for more than MSRP, and people are even bidding up display units. Not surprising with the IQ and uniformity issues inherent in large size LCD.

Was glad I was able to score one of the last Samsung PN64H5000's off Amazon last month. Now their secondary sellers are selling them for $800+ what I paid.

Edit: looks like open box used is all that left.

Plasmas aren't in production anymore. Older sets, even used ones, are being price gouged compared to what they were going for a couple of years ago. I wish I'd known plasma was being shuttered I'd have bought one of the final-run Panny ones. To hell with paying a reseller on amazon/ebay their markup though.

Hey guys, I hope you can help me here.. I need a new tv for current gen - last gen consoles and blu-ray viewing (so FHD TVs only, no need for 4k). One thing I really obsess about on TVs is how blacks are displayed. I have a fairly recent LCD monitor with VA panel, which from what I understand should be one of the best options for blacks on LCD screens, and I'm not really satisfied with that.

I know OLED TVs are the best choice for addressing this kind of problems (and best overall), but they're really too pricey, so I guess it all comes down to plasma, right? But then, which plasma? Plus, has the image persistence problem been solved on recent (or should I say latest) models?

Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: I found a new LG 50PB5600 FHD for 450$, is it worth it?

burn in hasn't been a problem in almost 10 years. You'll always have a little IR if you have a static image on your screen for awhile but I move to another image should sweep it out pretty quick.

Hey can you guys help me. looking for a good projector and screen combo for my garage. I had a 55 inch before with two 32s on tv. but now i want to replace my 55 with projector.

Attn: Sony XBR850B owners, there is a new firmware update(294AAA) that finally fixes the busted 3D issue available on the official website.

Long story short, the 850B line launched last year with a tech issue that broke the 3D conversion for those sets. Constant cross-talk and messed up alignment made using 3D mode unwatchable, especially anything with fast motion. Months and months later they finally released a fix.

Currently out in EU and NA requiring a USB stick to install from the website, and will likely be an automatic update to the sets eventually if you are plugged into a home network. Really pleased as I was super bummed these $$$ XBR sets had a clear deficiency that Sony took fucking forever to fix. Everything looks fantastic now though.

I have a 55X850B and have had zero complaints about the 3D but interested to see if this will make my experience even better. We use simulated 3D fairly often when playing Wii U and watching some shows like Survivor. :)

EDIT: Because Brandon F didn't link to it, here is the update to the 55X850B he is talking about. It doesn't say anything about improved 3D in the description, but sounds like it should be worth it for smart app stability alone as I've been having issues in Hulu recently.

EDIT 2: Can't get it to install. Tried two different USB drives, and tried reformatting one of them still with no luck. I get a “Software cannot be updated using this USB device” message. Bummer..guess I'll just have to wait for Sony to push the update to my TV. :/

I am still looking for a good projector that would work great for both movies and games, but I can't find one that will have a low response rate. I guess I have to wait for now.

Reviews are starting to come in on the new curved 55" 4K OLED. It seems the flat models won't be out until Fall.

https://www.avforums.com/review/lg-55eg960v-eg9600-oled-uhd-4k-review.11301

Input lag at around 50ms is rather poor based on other current 4K sets but otherwise it looks very promising. 4K60 4:4:4 is there as well. If HDR can be added via firmware as rumored then this will be an amazing set. If only they can get the prices down so I could afford the 65".

Yeah I stumbled upon that TV too. Very interesting.

Apparently the 4K format has to reach a, what do I call it, standard, that has yet to be finalized? I heard it will probably get decided upon later this year. I guess that's why the flat panel later this year interests me.

For that reason I'll probably sit it out a bit until the flat TV's mentioned. I understood HDR support can't be patched in through firmware updates, so if it turns out to be very relevant, I'd hate to miss out on it. And the flat panels being cheaper, the newer model might actually be cheaper than this one when it gets here.

What's the point of buying the new OLEDs if the input lag is terrible (50 ms)?

What a disappointment.

There's not a single OLED gaming monitor in existence. Someone needs to make one. There is a market for such a thing. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

They don't make OLED monitors for the same reason they didn't make plasma monitors.

I'm in the same predicament :/. Just can't justify spending more than $5K on a set. I'm also considering the FALD CX850 and the Vizio R, but that is strictly based in price. If the eg9600 can do the HDR with an update it appears to be heads and tails above the best LCD sets.

The Sony HW40ES might be up your alley. Supposed to be quiet, with great (for projectors, at least) input lag.

That being said, I recently got an Epson 5025UB, and even though its lag is rated at 50ms (in "fast" mode), I find it to be totally playable. I'm sure if I were playing BF4 online or something like that, I'd feel differently, but it's a fantastic picture.

Keeping my eye on those as well. Sony just announced that the $4,500 65" X930C will support HDR but I'm not sure how capable it will be since it is edge lit. Vizio is interesting with the Reference looking solid on paper, I wouldn't be shocked if the 2015 P series supports Dolby Vision. The Vudu HDR rollout seems pretty big for just one television currently supporting it.

So I wonder how other plasma owners deal with games/tv/other media that have a bright blue sky on screen for long amounts of time.

thanks for the reply. input lag of 50mg is kind of high, I think that I will just install both Tv and projector once I renovate my basement

I saw the 65" 4K OLED in person

Nothing comes close. It's utterly unbelievable how good it looks. The best TV ever. Period.

No 4K OLEDs around here yet. I hope the local stores will have them up soon. Only had a 1080p OLED to compare with the JS9500 and that wasn't too impressive obviously.

I'm not sure what to expect with 50ms input lag. My current plasma has almost none, so I have no idea how much it would bother me.

Oh, the 40ES has a rated lag of around 25ms - I was talking about how my 5025UB (at 50ms) wasn't bad. Good luck!

what do you mean?
For example I've been playing GTAV again lately and a lot of the time the top half of the screen is bright blue due to the sky.

I've never really wondered about this to be honest until a few days ago. Wonder what kind of impact that can have in terms of image retention and if other gaffers have experience with that.
what's the benefit of a curved screen?
For a 16:9 display I don't see benefits to go curved. For a 21:9 the screen fits better in your field of view, I wish my 21:9 was slightly curved.

Yea, Sony opted to not state the fixes to 3D on the firmware notes in NA. The same exact update in EU does specify it, but they removed its mention in the notes in this country. Some believe that they didn't want to highlight the design error since there is a mega thread on the Sony forums detailing the issue that they falsely denied within(until this fix proves it was a problem), or that they just didn't want to publicly state there was a known defect. Flimsy argument, but who is to say what the decision was to delete that bulletpoint. It's still the same patch files under a different region moniker.

I have the 65" set, but some have reported the 55 firmware update hasn't worked for them either(I think some workarounds have been discovered to get it installed). Good to hear your 3D at least worked prior though. It was clearly broken prior to this update on the 65 sets.

Just picked up the Sony xbr65x850b for 2300. I had up to 3000 to spend. do u guys think it's a good deal. Still have time to take it back if there something better.

Great deal. I got mine for $2500 on discount a few months ago and that was a pretty high drop. Great TV as well. Make sure to get the latest firmware from the official website when its up and running too.

Will do. How good is it for gaming. And upscaling 1080p. Just worried about live foottball. It's replacing my st60 Plasma.

Have noticed very imperceptible levels of latency in my time with it. Sony has some of the best tech for gaming latency in their sets(at least based on trials on enthusiast forums and sites). If you use a PS4, you will appreciate how the TV auto-syncs itself to the system for powering on, even using the remote to control all PS4 functions(great for Netflix and apps).

Not a big fan of Sony's UI though. Too many core functions are buried under multiple menus making you wish for a dedicated shortcut button for certain toggles.

I also upgraded from a Kuro Plasma and while the overall black levels and picture doesn't quite match on the XBR, you won't really notice a very distinct difference very often. Upscaling is fantastic also and most seem to agree its a real highlight of the line. Very happy with mine overall.

I still don't see how a sky, a large area, would cause IR. IR is when there are basically very solid defined lines on a screen in one spot for a long time.

My wife called to let me know that a tech came out to look at my Samsung F8500. He replaced a board and the HDMI inputs work now! That was almost a huge loss. A spectacular TV that I barely got to use and would not have paid the now-exorbitant amount to get another new one. Hopefully it was just a light surge that took out the dumb HDMI (why the fuck did something so sensitive to surges become the standard?) and it wasn't something major that will see other boards failing soon.

I figure I should post this here in case anyone else is in the market for a new TV. I took the plunge on one of the new 2015 M series Vizios. As with last year's P series, they have an ultra low lag input that's wonderful for gamers, but one seemingly unadvertised feature they also have is a strobing backlight option. This does a fantastic job reducing motion blur and was a very pleasant surprise. Obviously it dims the image, but I find it remains pleasantly bright in a light controlled environment. I figured other gamers might be interested in that feature, which I'd only seen mentioned on Sony LCDs prior to this.

I should receive my Sony HW55 projector today ! Totally like a kid, can't wait to tinker with it.
Also got an incredible deal on a Samsung UE55H6850 ... Even the wife said go, so it's now proudly in the master bedroom !
