Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Well, looks like I am going to be shopping for a new TV. Both of my HDMI inputs in my Panasonic 42s60 went out, and its out of warranty. Are there any good LED/LCDs out there for around $400? Preferably 40-46 inches.

Everyone answer this question first!

But after you're done with that, or if you don't know, answer my question!

Anyone have good small TVs to recommend? I'm thinking something my wife can have in her kitchen, and I can move to my office . Pretty portable and decently small (22ish inches or less). For example, there is apparently such a thing as a "Playstation TV." Maybe that is a decent thing? (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K287K1M/?tag=neogaf0e-20)

I'm so antsy for the new Bravia X850 reviews. We're currently in the market for a new TV and if the reviews are good we'll probably take the ill-advised 4k plunge.

I figure I should post this here in case anyone else is in the market for a new TV. I took the plunge on one of the new 2015 M series Vizios. As with last year's P series, they have an ultra low lag input that's wonderful for gamers, but one seemingly unadvertised feature they also have is a strobing backlight option. This does a fantastic job reducing motion blur and was a very pleasant surprise. Obviously it dims the image, but I find it remains pleasantly bright in a light controlled environment. I figured other gamers might be interested in that feature, which I'd only seen mentioned on Sony LCDs prior to this.

Where did you find one? I can't seem to find any online retailers that are selling right now. Most are letting you preorder. I need to pay for one within the next 2 weeks.

I bought it on Amazon. They have sizes up to 60 inches right now. I only bought the 55 inch set, so that's what I'm referencing in my comment.

I have a question for you guys:

I'm looking to buy a new 60"+ tv for gaming and the like and I've being drawn towards the new 2015 M series (Vizio). It has 32 active LED zones for local dimming.

My question is should I go with that 2015 M series 60" (1500$)? or spend the same amount on the 2014 P series 60" which has 64 active LED zones.

More zones means better dimming, so for the same price the 2014 P series should win. I'm not aware of any specific advantage this year's M series has over last year's P sets other than price (most P sets are still more expensive than their same size M counterparts), but perhaps wait until a few more reviews are out?

Let me amend that: the M may have better upscaling than the P series, which is arguably more important than the local dimming. I'd say wait for more reviews that can do proper comparisons.

I had Panny GT30 55" Plasma that had one heck-of-a-picture until it gave out. I had the option of getting it fixed or get something else. I ended up with a Sony HW45 Projector...size does matter!

What's the point of buying the new OLEDs if the input lag is terrible (50 ms)?

What a disappointment.
That's in Game mode. In PC mode, LG's earlier OLED TV had 31 or 39ms, while it was 46ms in Game mode. I'd imagine this will be simillar. I'd also imagine however that input lag will grow larger when displaying 1080p content on a 4K TV.

Well, I guess I don't need a new TV anymore. I unplugged my plasma for a few minutes then plugged it back in. The HDMI ports started working again.

Pretty weird but whatever, I am just glad it works again lol.

I'm looking for a good, 32" inch gaming tv to buy from amazon right now, there are so many options and so many out of stock 32" tv's, I don't what to choose. Anyone wants to help me choose one?

Well, after my defective replacement on my 2014 Sony Kdlw850b 60 inch went bad too, Sony is just gonna cut me a check for the $1500 and come take this one away. Beautiful TV, great performance, hugely disappointing reliability. Obviously these are complex machines, but my first one had a backlight issue resulting in black horizontal line, and then the refurbed unit they sent me to replace my new one has a bad logic board. I asked for and was promised an A (new) unit replacement, but they can't find me one to send. So they are refunding me the cash and I am back in the market after 6 months.

It seems like the 2015 Vizio m-series 4k is they way to go, right? As long as it has that low-lag game mode from last years models, I think I am turning this check around for the Vizio. Anyone have one of these in home?

careful. magic does not exist. usually the problem isn't fixed.

I do. See my posts above. Nice set, definitely has the low lag as well as a strobing backlight. Nice for gaming, no doubt.

Best Buy has the LG OLED 55" 55EC9300 for $2499 and they actually have them in stock around here which is nice because they've been OOS for months. I'm seriously tempted. The only thing holding me back is that I'd really like a 60" screen, and the 36ms input lag (which really isn't that bad).

Got to see the 4K OLED in action on Saturday at John Lewis. Was very, very tempting to get it then and there but still holding out for the flat version. Although the curved one is pretty damm nice.

60" is too big for 1080p.

after lots of research, i ended up getting the samsung H7150 65'' last November

I got lucky with not much ghosting/flashlighting in the corners (saw some bad ones in the store). Happy with it after 6 months of use

If you can still get one, grab the now $1499 XBR55X850B. I own it and know several others who do in different sizes and it is no question the best tv for the check price Sony cut you. Destroys the vizio in image quality, color and upscaling. Features too with 3d, built in camera and PlayStation now. 55" instead of 60" but go for quality not quantity.

Edit: plus triluminous color which the W850 didn't have.

Same here, with it being so close to coming out I'm stuck between last year's seemingly great X850B and next month's X850C.

Anybody know anything about the Sony kdlr510c? I think its very new, as i cant find any reviews. Its on sale at Walmart for $349. Walmart also has a refurb kdlw590b for the same price.

I can't decide between the two..

Also, anybody have info on the best 1080p projector in the 3-500 dollar range?

Sounds good. I appreciate the feedback

Heh, yeah, it's tough wait to finish choosing isn't it.

Nice. Fall through? So did you preorder some size of X850C then?

No, not quite. I've left my phone number at a few stores in the vicinity to see if they might beat the estimated delivery time on the Sony webstore (29th of May for this region).

Fact is we've decided on a size and feel pretty comfortable with the past few years of Bravia models. The added connectivity for the PS (just to name one) is also a major plus. So we're pretty set in our purchasing decision. Like anything though: if the end product doesn't meet the expectations we'll have to search for a different model, but I'm pretty confident (hopeful) that the X850C will live up to the expectations.

That's disappointing to hear since I have the same TV.

Yeah, seeing that they are sending me back out into the market with a $1500 check burning a hole in my pocket, I am really looking hard at this set. waiting to hear the reviews, get rtings.com's take on it. I was super happy with the look of the W850B and reviews-wise nothing beats it in panel performance at that price point

Frankly, i am considering just going out and buying another 850B. I love the TV, i just got a busted one (twice). Plus, i won't have to re-program all my AV shit if I just get the same set. I just want it to work. I already have a 3-year warranty purchased to use on it if I stay with Sony.

Also, the 850B is about $400 less nowadays, so I will pocket cash if I do get another one. But that 4k....

Welp. the 50w800b I bought last year will now not turn on and just keeps blinking a red light. Time to sleep on this and then see what kind of warranty it has.

My 55x800b is doing something similar. It rebooted itself a few times yesterday, then today it would only reboot to a blinking red light. A power cycle seems to have fixed it for now, but I'm not optimistic.

Checking out the 850c on Sat, just to see how well the new OS works and up conversion/color with the X1 chip. Buying a 930c/940c though. The X-tended dynamic range (pro on 940) are usually no joke and they'll support HDR. Sony had the best color and detail in 2014 leds, after seeing the new Samsung's I think they're going to have this year as well.

Would buy the 9300 oled but terrified of the burn in I saw in store on one. And Vizio is not an option after seeing how awful their tv's were last year.

The 940 maybe too big though. I have a small room it's in and a big couch and 7.2 surround. So space is a premium. The 950b won't be updated to hdr. So the 930c maybe my best choice. But if they fixed the halo issue from the 950 with the 940 I may just pull the trigger on impulse.

Very interested to read about your experiences! You're quite lucky btw :)

Mine is going right to blinking red light as soon as I plug it in, even without trying to turn it on.

Where do you see the 940's supporting HDR? They havnt even announced how many zones it has have they?

Called the Sony service number and they are going to have a technician call me within 24-48 hours and then come out to my house to see what parts need to be ordered, then order them and come back some other time to repair my TV. Fucking long ass process, didn't know things still worked this way. I'm so use to companies just mailing out a new product and having you return your busted one in the same box.

I will probably upgrade my 55" W950 Sony to the XBR-65X930C if a few scenarios work out:

- If the HDMI spec supports 4k 60fps 4:4:4 chroma
- If Nvidia next non Titan card does 4k 60fps.
- If the input lag is sub 27ms.
- If the viewing angles are decent.

I really like the wedge shape televisions, I've been happy with those speakers + wireless subwoofer, then switching over to some good Sennheiser headphones when I want more audio immersion.

The 31ms value specifically was arrived at by stacking PC Mode (Input Label?) and Game Mode simultaneously wasn't it? I know that value comes from someone in this thread who has one of the 1080p models and a Bodnar and I seem to recall him saying it's in PC Mode + Game Mode, but I could be mistaken. It's probably moot though as the reviews say PC Mode didn't decrease lag, so barring a FW update, it sounds like ~50ms might be the best the 4k units are going to do.

And Vizio is not an option after seeing how awful their tv's were last year.

Huh? Last year's Vizio E series was one of the best buys you could get. Dark blacks, better BWB contrast ratio than most TVs two to three times the cost, and all had excellently low input lag, with minimal motion trails.

Sony doesn't announce or list the number of zones.

About HDR...

The X930C and X940C series will also be compatible with High Dynamic Range (HDR) content via a network update this summer. HDR is an emerging video format that can display a wider range of brightness levels which will allow content creators, such as movie directors, to expand their range of creativity. HDR content will be available from major video service providers like Amazon and Netflix this year.

Too bad the X940C is 75" only. Too big for my space with those side speakers and too expensive. A 65" would have been a contender. Not sure I want an edge lit HDR X930C.

Sony has already confirmed the 2015 C series do not support 4K/60 with 4:4:4 chroma.

The 980 Ti will likely do 4K with 30 fps in almost all games available today. Hoping for consistent 4K with 60 fps in all games on a single GPU is a pipe dream until Pascal in 2016.

The input lag in Game Mode has been around ~40 ms on both the 2013 A series and 2014 B series Sony 4K sets. Since they haven't bothered to improve the hardware boards to implement an HDMI that support 4K/60 with 4:4:4 chroma, I would be surprised if they have been able to get input lag down on that scaler. It's one of the best scalers around for high quality upscaling content to a 4K panel but speedy it definitely is not. The lag when in Cinema mode on these TVs is in the ~120 ms range, it turns out that high quality upscaling is not magic after all.

Yea, that's the reality of it. Which is fine with me, I'm happy with my W950 and will hold onto it for two years I suppose.

They announced HDR like "Unknown" posted. 930/940 will support it, the 950B will not due to "hardware limitations" (lack of X1). Zones I haven't read about yet, and there were conflicting reports on the 940 having less, more, or the same zones as the 950B. Only way we'll probably find out is when someone counts them.

Poor color compared to the others and horrid reliability make them a no-go to me.

I really hope these drop further in price by the end of the year. Have any other brands announced OLED TVs in development? I'm far more interested in this tech than 4K.
