PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

I bought one of those $9-10 knock-off controllers from eBay. It's okay. The face buttons are fine, and the analog sticks feel nice, but the d-pad feels mushy, and the shoulder buttons feel like they have a small amount of excess plastic that gets in the way when pressed. Also, the receiver mold is a bit large and difficult to fit in the controller port. Whenever I plug something into the USB port, the controller loses signal, and I have to unplug the receiver. Also, on ocassion, when I start my PS2, the left stick kind of drifts, but corrects itself quickly.

The Logitech controllers are too expensive for me (around $30 with receiver), but the knock-offs are serviceable, especially since I mostly play RPGs. I may take it apart and see if I can swap the d-pad from an old DS3 I have, and maybe file down the L2/R2 buttons so they don't scrape, then it would be fine.

to be fair, the original d-pad could well be defined as mushy as well.

Just bought a new PS2 Slim, second controller, 2 memory cards, componet multi-link cable, and 12 new PS2 games.

I am thinking why not go for an even 20 game collection which means 8 more. I decided on Burnout 3, Soul Reaver 2, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, and 5 others. Any ideas for the last 5 games anyone? God of War games, Metal Gear Solid games, Final Fantasy X, and the Jak trilogy are in my PS3 HD remake collection already. And I will be buying Persona 4 Golden on Vita.

Lucky sod! Pal or US?
I have it digitally on PS3 but would prefer a UK PS2 disc copy.
You should probably pick up Onimusha series and Project Zero/Fatal Frame

Ratchet games if you don't have the HD collection.

Devil Summoner 2! To fit in with the action and RPG mix you have. Great game and highly recommended. REZ is another one of my favs. Currently playing Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria and I am enjoying it. Shadow of the Colossus and one of the Katamari's. That's a great varied 5 if I do say so myself.

Katamri Damacy and/or We Love Katamari, silent Hill 2 and 3, Battle Front 1 and/or 2, Shadow of Destiny,Gran Turismo 4, Psychonauts, and Ratchet games.

Ratchet games all day every day. All over Jak games. That's right, I say Jak games ain't shit. :P

Agreed. But to add further: PS3 Jak, Sly & Ratchet Remasters > PS2 Versions.

No real need to play the ps2 versions if you own the ps3 trilogies.

Don't the PS3 ports of the Jak games have issues? I'm pretty sure the PS2 versions are the definitive as far as framerate goes, at least.

I really don't like the d-pad on the Logitech and the shoulder buttons are ass tbh.

Agreed. It's a good controller though, overall. One of the best third party pads I've used for any console.

But having just bought another PS2, I've looked into those wireless knock off Dual Shocks myself. Give us some impressions later, TGO.

Not sure if your an amazon shopper but they have and have had the entire? set of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona 3 & 4 for like $15~20 new for years after their reprint. Great deals for the collectors.

Okami, Ace Combat 4/5/0, and at least one game by NIS (Disgaea, Soul Nomad, etc). Definitely take a look at the other Megaten games too. DDD and Nocturne are A+.

Combat Queen ended up being much worse than expected in so many unexpected ways. Instant death pits, impossible aiming in 3rd person mode, hit sponge bosses, no checkpoints, and MGS length unskippable cut scenes that you have to watch each time you die. It's also like 8 hours long, which is an eternity for a FMV game. It's.....beautiful.

and now it'll go to it's rightful place as a bookend for my ps2 shelf.

Oh man, I am so subbed to this thread

PS2 was pretty much the main console I grew up on.

Question for the guys that have a PS2 and backwards compatible PS3. What system do you prefer to use for PS2 games, and why? I've been using my PS3 to play PS2 games ever since I got it, and I plan to keep it that way as long as possible.

Huh. I know some of the PS3 HD collections were trade offs, but I thought that one was solid. Which others had problems? I know of SotC/Ico and ZotE.

Aside from the more sadistic physics in SotC, I thought that collection was really good. Especially since Ico is based on the graphically superior European release. Us scrubs here in the US got the graphically lesser one on PS2.

Haven't played ZotE HD so I can't comment.

So I've been on a Shinobi kick as late, and I just ordered Japanese copies of Shinobi and Kunoichi to add to my PS2 collection. Albeit they're gonna take a while to arrive, but it'll be worth it once they do.

Also looking at all the PS2 games I have, it's currently 23 total (25 with the incoming two games). Compared to the amount of games I own for all my other systems individually, it just reminds me how much love this fucking console.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone!!

Do the Meral Gear Solid HD games and the God of War HD games suffer from any issues?

Lucky sod! Pal or US?

USA, it was sold by Amazon for $15. I already bought the PSN version from before but it's emulated not native. So I figure no emulation is better.

Yep. Between the rough gameplay and constant crashes, it was not worth the hassle.

Oh no. I'll have to do the Jak Trilogy on PS2 then.

Does the poster say if that case is hand made or OEM? Never heard of a case like that

It has never been turned on. My Dad was doing consulting work at the time for Sony and they sent him it along with an educational class room game to try out and give feedback. He didn't know anything about games so he asked me to do it for him. I was ten at the time and already had a PS2 so I had no interest in this novelty consol. I never tested the game because I was too intersted in GTA, so I lied to Dad and told him the game sucked and kids wouldn't relate to it. Apparently Sony agreed and the game was never released. The PS2 has since been stored at my parents house until I found it last week.

he also said it's a DTL-H30001 E model in the comments on imgur

I like original console now that I have a Test console, scaler and a bunch of ps1/ps2 imports. It is an expensive solution and one I didn't bite on for years while trying everything else, but my pickiness won out in the end.

I'll play the HD remasters of games that are the same in HD or at least close enough, though. The main issues are performance and input lag. I've run into plenty of performance issues with PS1 on PS3 and both systems have input lag on PS3 no matter what configuration--HW BC, software BC, PSN versions, or disc.

So with Ys VI hitting PC services can we expect the price of the PS2 version to change much either way? Also, is that version any good/worth owning?

he really shouldn't have posted it in gaming if he wanted any discussion. That board is awful.

Cool case, regardless.

I believe it has a really poor translation. Not sure.

I'm not convinced. I have a Panasonic plasma with a decent 'game mode' and don't notice any difference when i play the game on my ps2 slim over composite.

Even shmups and the like - all good on my end regarding input lag. Won't be replacing my bc ps3 anytime soon.

It's there. This has been known since ps3 launch. Feel free to google it. You might just be used to it, which is fine.

And wasn't the soundtrack inexplicably replaced too?
my impression is it has a host of issues, though I couldn't tell you specifically what those issues are. the PC version seems like it'll be the definitive though once it comes over.

Yup. AFAIK the PS3 lag w/ a decent tv is ~40-50ms so like 3 frames. Not sure how accurate that is, but that's right about the amount of lag between none and everyone in their right mind can feel it. So some people will notice and some people won't. If you've played quite a bit on the PS3 I imagine you'd get used to it.

The problem is measuring it. I've seen people throw numbers about ms latency and alll that but never any controlled experimentation. I agree it has the potential for being there but given the correct TV setup you can eliminate or at least substiantially minimize it to the point of it not being detectable.

Unless you can direct me to some double blind tests conducted with an array of equiptment i say bunk

a CFW PS3 might be able to run a homebrew app for this if someone has one. I dunno for sure, though.

beautiful!

the game better not have been Chain Dive. but Sony was rejecting games on the flimsiest of pretenses on PS2, so wouldn't be surprised if the kid was responsible. lol

All I know is I do better at games where frames matter, particularly with one platformer I'm speed running...a lot less inexplicable falls in pits, way more responsive. going through a scaler chopped it down to all but the 1.5 frames from the scaler itself.

Anyone shipped a PS2 lately? I've got one up over in the b/s/t thread but I'm beginning to think by the time I pay to ship it I could just get trade in value from gamestop and make the same amount of money.

If just landed a 75 game lot on ebay. Paid £77, £67 for the lot and £10 for delivery.

It's a mixed bag, some great stuff, some shovelware, a couple of duplicate titles.

I'll sift through it all when it arrives. Some of this will be given away or donated to charity.

OK, looking through this I can identify a few duds already which I will be offloading and looking through this again makes me feel like a bit of a mug, a lot of titles I want rid of already.

Disney Sing It
Disney Sing It Pop Hits
AMF Extreme Bowling 2006
Tiger Woods 2002
Singstar Anthems
Eyetoy Play 2 and 3
Shrek 2
EA Rugby 2005
Madden 2005
The Simpsons Skateboarding
Zapper
Scorpion King
FIFA 07
Disney Think Fast
Charlie's Angels
Pump My Ride
EA Cricket 2005
Gametrak Real Golf
Play It Chess
Stealth: The War On Terror
High School Musical Sing It
Some demo discs I can't identify from the picture.
Pride Fighting Championships

There are also a few here I don't know of, so these will have to be evaluated and then I will decide what to do with them.

How's Gitaroo Man? Looking at a PAL copy for $40 and wondering if I should bite. Seems like it could be a neat game to have in the collection.

Yeah you overpaid quite a lot there. In the future, check a site like CEX to see what these games can really be bought for.

Somewhat on-topic, does anyone know if there is a good 3rd party PS1/2 Memory Card reader compatible with PS3? The official one seems to have gotten expensive.

I have a way to transfer saves back using a hacked PSP but I'd rather have something easier.

I believe you can use FMCB to move savefiles from your MCs to a USB if you've got it. that'd be a cheap solution.

OK I didn't know PS3 would read ps1/ps2 memory card files off of a USB device.

Looks like you need to use uLaunchElf to copy the save to USB, do a format conversion PC side so that PS3 is happy, and just stick the USB device in your PS3.

Much easier than my old method of multiple format conversions and a PSP to get them onto a PS3. Thanks.

huh, last I checked there were 3rd party ones, but they seem to be gone completely. weird!

This is what I plan to use to move/backup savefiles. gotta get FMCB installed though. procrastinating.

Just got my Japanese copies of Shinobi and Kunoichi this afternoon. Now the total games in the collection is at 25.

Any of you ever sought out specific region versions of games for the system for any specific reasons? For me, I went for these as I already had Shinobi on PSN and after nearly killing myself on Super difficulty I wanted to unlock everything again on the original hardware but not deal with that shit again.

The obvious answer is when games have different version numbers in different regions or censored/removed content/etc.

So I've been digging around in the dark side more than usual, and I've read that PS2 games can be made to run in 480p on real hardware via some kind of hex edit or an elf patch file. Anybody have experience with this?

PSX-scene has an entire board dedicated to 480p and widescreen hacks. My impression is that they have variable results. I imagine the 480p one works better than the widescreen one but yeah, it seems like a pretty simple edit that can be done to the ISO on some level. Not terribly involved.
