Biggest Let-Downs Disappointments you've had with Gaming

Was in Babages in the 90's and saw a game that I wanted so bad but was on vacation in Nevada so I passed up buying the game cause i didn't have my Saturn with me. Years later (last week) I finally bought the game on Ebay. I just remember back in the day the magazines made so much of this game's graphics along with the game's fun factor so I was really excited to get it in the mail....

That game..... Skeleton Warriors on the Sega Saturn. Bleh...wtf... Not liking it at all, actually I'm hating it. The game has so many cheap enemies bum rushing you from side to side. You have to constantly button mesh wildly otherwise they overwhelm you with cheap hits. And the platforming is next to none in the game. And what there is is mediocer, the boss fights are a joke also. Very disappointed here. This was one of those games I use to hear about that you had to own on a Saturn or PSX back in the day,and now its left a very shitty taste in my mouth. Even the game' visuals don't do it for me and I love old retro games and their old ass graphics but this....this.... :/ I guess I can use it to scoop up dog poop. Atleast my dog will be happy....

I think I need to change my answer. The real answer is gaming in general has disappointed me. Maybe its because I'm getting older and priorities are shifting, but every game on the market feel so limiting and like a giant waste of time.

GTA5 - Fun for awhile, but you can so easily see all the seems of the world and how limited it is.
Witcher 3 - Same exact things, looks great, but still all the mechanics of it are right there, black and white.

I want gaming to move toward organic worlds and systems. I want to be SURPRISED by game play, and not have all games be just easily recognizable systems on top of systems to give a poor illusion of actions.

I think thats why No Mans Sky is my most anticipated game, even though I know its going to likely disappoint just as much as something like Spore did.

I'm just tired of "press A, B or Y to win" in games, and the rinse and repeat Halo method of "fun'. It no longer gives me that thrill and fun it did when I was younger. I love games like Fear where I'm actually surprised how the AI came at me, how unpredictable it was, and how it actually felt like you were up against something.

If you haven't already, you should really play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. From what you said it's exactly what you're looking for. I'd recommend using the Complete mod for it, I adored it.

Then the sequels can be your new disappointments, at least if you're like me :P But seriously, SoC is phenomenal.

I've said this a few times (and for that I apologise) but mine is Destiny. The original Halo imo is the best FPS bar none so I expected Halo in an action rpg/loot style setting. Instead we got a loot style game alright but completely devoid of any story, life, variety and basically content. The worst part was that most of the content seemed like it was deliberately stripped from the game so that it could be drip-fed to us. Imo Destiny is everything that is wrong with the gaming industry today, a pure example of corporate bullcrap dictating art. Why Bungie?

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
No More Heroes
StarCraft II
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Mega Man and Mega Man II -- just recently tried out the series for the first time
Every Pokemon game released after HGSS
Every Sonic game released after Sonic Advance
The constant recycling of Mario assets vs. the constant refreshes of the Mario Mania years

No Shenmue conclusion and Sega killing off the Dreamcast in general

FF13

Edit: Me not getting into mainline Nintendo games like Metroid Prime and Zelda

me not getting into the Souls games

Marvel v Capcom 3 and SF x Tekken

Anarchy Reigns

NFL 2K's death

Assassin's Creed 3

State of Emergency

Virtua Fighter 3

For all the games I've played over 20+ years, I feel relatively blessed to be choose-y, and most games I'm hyped about work out.

I was pretty disappointed with how SFIV turned out. It's not a bad game, it just wasn't as organic as 3rd Strike.

Clover getting shut down really bummed me out.

We got Platinum out of it, so it's not all bad. But I would LOVE to see a Viewtiful Joe 3 written by Kamiya. Will never happen.

Serious Sam 3, GoW: Judgment, and right now I'm playing AC Unity... what a letdown, even tough it's beautiful, I have to say, this is the worst, the most terrible AC ever...

For me, the biggest let down would be the Ace Combat series. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation never reaching the PS3 was the first of many blunders for the series. It was made exclusive for the Xbox 360 after the series launched on the PS1 and the PS2. I just couldn't believe that my favorite game series was jumping ship. I've always thought that the series was built for the Dualshock controllers.

When I finally did purchase Ace Combat 6 for the 360, I was surprised at the lack of pressure control for the map button. It was so useful for the past Project Aces games that it was hard to get over. The game was also cheap - unecessarily long missions that require the destruction of over 400 targets was just ridiculous. This means that as a mission approaches 30 minutes, you might fail because 72 new targets have just popped up and you only have 12 missiles left with not enough time to resupply.

Well in hindsight though I shouldn't have really cried over it because the series pretty much lossed its way after Project Aces started catering to the Western market. Ace Combat 6 and beyond were all garbage - minus the remake of Ace Combat 2 on the 3DS, and maybe the PSP's iteration called Ace Combat X. And even then, no recent titles have ever captured the epic turbulence that are Ace Combat 4, 5, and 0.

Luckily Project Aces has developed a gem that flew way under the radar - Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces for the Wii. That and the aforementioned Ace Combat 2 remake on the 3DS are really Project Aces' only 2 decent productions since their PS2 titles.

The Master Chief Collection hurts the most, just because it was both awesome and totally plausible. There's no reason we shouldn't be able to enjoy the original series in HD with unified matchmaking, but it was so horribly mismanaged with glitches and inexplicably missing features that the population has been permanently crippled, and the classic Halo renaissance that could have been was lost forever.

Spore is a close second, and more a failure of living up to unmatchable fever-dream hype. Wright and Maxis promised a fully procedural clockwork universe with deep, endless gameplay and story possibilities, but delivered a dumbed-down collection of minigames building up to a tedious space stage. The clunkiness of the Sporepedia also smothered what could have been a great user community.

Destiny is a distant third, and disappointing primarily because of how utterly awful the story was, especially considering how great Bungie's cutscenes, dialogue, and lore normally are. The discouraging gameplay mechanics don't help much, either.

Yoshi%27s_Story.jpg

Yoshi's Story, I was looking forward to it like crazy, bought an N64 with it (Mario was not available at that store on that day) and play right through it. Way too easy, way too short and the controls wer not as great as I was used from Nintendo at all. It still was a fun game, but my expectations were shattered.
Banjo-Kazooie_Nuts_%26_Bolts_Game_Cover.jpg

Fun and playful game but I wanted a collectathon and got a Lego game instead.
Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Next-Gen_Box_Art.JPG

Sonic's last gen debut looked really promising in trailers, at least from the Sonic side of things, and it ended up being insufferable garbage with great music...
Assassin%27s_Creed_III_Game_Cover.jpg

Actually the worst of all these games (despite Sonic), but my expectations were only high, not enormously high. Really horribly paced game, with needlessly huge world, being way too guided for the first half of the game and bug-ridden to top it off. The game seemed really ambitous when presented by the developers and you could still feel the ambition in the final game but it was brought together so weakly that it's a shame.

Also Brink, Halo 4.

I still maintain Brink's multiplayer was fun when it worked. The core gameplay ideas were solid.

My vote goes to Destiny.
Played countless hours of the alpha/beta, preordered the digital guardian edition for $100 because of my faith in bungie...and then...

ME0000212726_2.jpg

This game getting canceled. A lot of people say that they probably used elements from it in Fantasy Life, but I wanted a full-fledged MMO.

Other than that? No word on The Last Guardian is depressing. I also remember being upset when this game called Dead Phoenix for the Gamecube was canceled. Was supposed to be a Panzer Dragoon style game. Oh, and some GTA ripoff with zombies called Dead Auto.

Probably FFX-2's existence. It's a long story.

I went into FFXIII fully expecting it to not be good, based on the track record of its writer/director (this is related to the X-2 story, I guess) so I can't call it a disappointment, per se.

Metroid: Other M. Every new detail that came out on the road to release should have thrown up massive red flags but I was starving badly for a new metroid that I convinced myself it was gonna be fantastic. I never expected it to be the atrocity it was and it's still to this day the only game that makes me irrationally mad.

Mass Effect 3 ending
Dragon Age Inquisition
Persona Arena story modes (new fan caught in the hype, did not lower expectations)
Sims 4
No Billy Hatcher sequel
Wind Waker sequels relegated to the god damn DS

There are probably more but that's all I got off the top of my head.

Edit: OH! No Sonic Generations 2. I am so, so angry that they didn't follow up on that formula because they finally hit a winner. They half ruined it with Lost World and completely dropped the ball with Boom. I still have hope, though.
Persona 3 Velvet/Complete/Platinum/Whatever
I really need a definitive P3 game, something that merges FES's overworld and anime FMVs with P3P's gameplay and story enhancements. Throw in the FeMC path and The Answer (with selectable difficulty) and I'll fork over large amounts of money.
Pleeeeeeeease Atlus. Recommending Persona 3 is such a pain in the ass because I have to sit and explain what every version does for half an hour before hand. I want to play through FES myself + The Answer, but the game is such a slog after Portable.

When I played soul calibur 4 over a friend's house and noticed how shitty its story mode was compared to soul calibur 2

Probably F-Zero GX.

A strange choice perhaps but at the time I was very heavily invested in F-Zero games and especially in F-Zero X. Wasted hundreds of hours in time trialling in that game alone as it had such awesome controls and special moves.

So of course I had very high hopes for Sega's version as it looked totally awesome but once I got my hands on it disappointment soon followed. The controls just didn't click with me like the previous games, everything felt so floaty.. and then there was the snaking fiasco which completely ruined time trialling for me.

Top 3:

3. The Evil Within

Ever since RE4 (which is up to this day my favorite game ever) I was waiting for a new horror flick from Mikami. I expected no less than the Second Coming of this game. What I got however was some janky, bug-ridden shit with a cropped FOV and a story that didn't make any sense at all. I was devastated.

2. Resident Evil 5

With RE4 being my favorite game, I expected this to at least somewhere as good as it. What I got however was a lame game that shamelessly copied from it's predecessor and tucked on a Coop on top of it. Being a solo gamer this totally killed the game for me. But even if it wouldn't have been for that, the horrible story/setting (GLOBAL SATURATION) would have ruined it for me. I have been hardcore RE fan since 1996 and this one hit me really hard. My love for the series hasn't been the same ever since. I haven't completed RE6 to this day....

1. Metal Gear Solid 4

MGS used to be one of my all time favorites. MGS2 was probably my most anticipated game of all time. In retrospect it's almost hard to believe that MGS4 single handedly managed to kill all my interest in the series (more so than RE5 with RE). It was so incredibly bad and embarrassing, not only am I baffled that Kojima got money to make this crap but also are the reviews THE testament of gaming review failure. After forcing myself through this crap I tried to replay it several time but just couldn't get past the desert setting. I bought GZ but only finished it once. Could not play it again. The series is forever tainted for me. MGS4 left scars, big scars.

It still kinda hurts. 3D World is great, but to think that the first HD Mario would be a spiritual successor to the only Mario game in existence that was boring enough for me to have erased from my memory...well it's just sad.

As for other things, well 3D Land comes to mind, as well as the 3DS Launch. Likewise, more of a let down in regards to the industry, but well everything leading up to Zelda U, the design of a 29 year old character shouldn't be cast into doubt, and fans of said character shouldn't have to worry about his future.

That Final Fantasy 15 demo was a piece of hot, stank garbage. Its combat system was garbage; horrendous lock on and tracking on some of the moves; the shitty cast; not letting me play as my boyfriend Cor; and boring surroundings. I understand it's just a demo, but I went in to it excited and was really let down. It needs a lot of cook time.

I'm no longer really hyped for it. I'm approaching it with caution from here on.

Destiny by far. I thought the purchase was a no brainer after the beta but the general repetition and disgraceful excuse of a campaign pretty much killed my enthusiasm after a week.

BioShock Infinte (hyped by old E3 demos, almost nothing from them is in final release)
Mass Effect 3 ending
GTA 4
Assassin's Creed 3
Call of Duty 2 (complete trash in compare to previous ones)
Death of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series
Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway
Still no Sam & Max Season 4
The Sims 3 and 4
Mafia II
Resident Evil 6
Dragon Age II
Might & Magic Heroes VI
Need for Speed: Undercover, Most Wanted (2012) and Rivals
Deus Ex: The Fail

Gotta agree with the bolded.
This game wasn't on my list (well my list is one game) only because from what I saw before the game came out, I felt it was gonna be bad. So it wasn't a disappointment. It's what I expected and boy was it bad.

Smash Brothers Brawl was the worst disappointment I've ever had in gaming. It's the title that taught me that pedigree is worthless, and that developers do not care what the biggest fans of a game thought, no matter the game's success.

While I found ME3's ending and Star Ocean IV's cast and script to be incredibly disappointing, the worst of the lot last gen was FFXIII for me.

WatchDogs

Worst and most utterly disappointing game I've ever played and like all of you I've played a lot of games. Some which are worse than others but WD takes the top spot for worst pieces of piss (yeah I said pieces) I've ever played.

Is not an actual game and it might just be due to a recency bias but the #Gamersgate saga is probably one of the most disappointing and embarrassing thing I've ever witnessed when it comes to gaming culture.

It pretty much signalled to me that video games will probably never hold the same cultural significance as the film medium it's so desperately trying to chase.

Finishing ME3 before the ending controversy had hit the interwebs. Standing before the three-pronged end video selection, I already felt a real WTF moment.

Most missions in Hitman Absolution. You spend all that time being stealthy and racking up a massive score, only to be served an ending video that makes 47 look like a bumbling cretin.

Halo 4. Completing the rinse and repeat last level and then getting a giant FU as an ending.

The Legacy of Kain games never getting a proper resolution.

1, Dragon Age - I was expecting a new BG

2, GTA IV - after SA it was a huge letdown, Liberty City is just an overdesigned wallpaper and nothing to do outside missions

Mass Effect 1. I wanted to love it, I really did. It whispered honeyed words in my ear, urging me to ditch Mario Galaxy for its charms. It bored me to tears, characters, gameplay the lot. It was put down painlessly after 15 hours.

I love Halo 3 but I was disappointed that it didn't reveal all the secrets about the Covenant and the Forerunners. You have to read the literature to find out that kind of stuff.

Hearing that Knights of the Old republic 3 had its entire story written and the game was in pre production only to be cancelled because LucasArts had some restructuring.

Imperium Galactica 3 turning into Nexus the Jupiter Incident. Not that there is anything wrong with Nexus, it's just we were promised a 4x game with 3D space and ground battles with the same stunning visuals found in Nexus.

Abysmal western support for amazing handhelds (DS, PSP, 3DS and Vita). I really want to know their reasons. But as Ready at Dawn said they really might prefer to work on superior hardware instead, even when new home consoles haven't been sold much yet.

Such shame.

Star Wars Galaxies

the ideas surrounding the game prior to launch and in Beta were FANTASTIC. The Galactic War for Zones of Control within the various worlds. Owning a zone meant that faction would get boosts and such for its members. Becoming a Jedi was something that was supposed to be EXTREMELY rare. Only happening to a few people and those people, if they showed themselves publicly, would begin to be hunted by Darth Vader ( played by GM ) and the Empire. Death was Perma-death.

Sounded so epic and awesome. But, then the game launched and it was nothing like that and was basically a star wars social meeting spot. Especially when housing was introduced. Which was actually pretty cool no doubt. Being able to build your own towns and such.

It had its good points, but man the overall promise and potential was not at all taken advantage of.

Dear lord, this sounds great!

Hopefully we'll see a game like this was supposed to be.

Finding out just how shitty communities in gaming can be, I honestly expected gamers to be a lot more pleasant to each considering we all have the same passion for the hobby but nope, there more assholes than you can shake a stick at. What a joy it is being shouted over the net while playing CoD for the first time.

Neogaf is probably the best place to discuss games because of the effective modding that nukes peoples accounts that are not easy to get even then though there's still a shit ton of animosity.

Also GT5 to an extent, but that's because I fell for the wayyyyy overblown hype (never again).
Yeah, GT5 was a huge disappointment, the full extent of which I didn't even realize at the time.

I wasn't exactly super hyped, I just expected a "GT4 but better" (I still regard 4 as the high watermark of the franchise in a lot of ways).

Mass effect series - I just found it very boring and shallow, it could have been so much better if they had gone full blown RPG and made the planet searches not so tedious
