Biggest Let-Downs Disappointments you've had with Gaming

suikoden 4 was absolutely gutting. Suikoden 3 was also a disappointment, since i was so charmed by the 2D versions, i could never fully enjoy the huge departure that was S3. But then 4 happened...

Other then that, i dunno. I've grown incredibly apt in curating what games will be for me and which games to ignore.

Star Wars Galaxies new game enhancements.

Over night Lucas Arts destroyed a true open world, create your own path, build your own cities, factories (etc.) player driven economy mmo with a very dedicated community and created an abomination theme park styled mmo to challange World of Warcraft. Guess what it did not work out they and they lost a huge chunk of their loyal fanbase. The game never recovered after that...

Dragon Quest Monster 3: Caravan Heart. I was very disappointed when Enix decided not to translate the game since I loved the first two, and was excited to play as Keifer from DQ7 again. Fast-forward 8 years and a translation group releases a patch... And then I figure out why it was never released in the West. Uggghhhhh. Not good at all.

Resident Evil 4

I wanted this version of the game more than just about any other game. The part where the final RE4 marked the end of RE as survival horror only makes it sting even more. Because of that, the Silent Hills news isn't nearly as disappointing, but it's probably the biggest bummer since then.

Your loss is my gain. I consider re4 to be a near perfect game.

I try to not get hyped, so for me it is probably FFXIII. Or SE in general for the entire last gen.

Blood Omen 2
Blood Omen 2
Blood Omen 2
Space Marine
Darksiders 2
FFX-2
FF12
FF13
FF13-2

All of the above ruined my life in some fashion.

Fable. They promised a ton of stuff that never made it into the final game. It's a good game but it could of been so much more.

Raising a shield, but one of my major "recent" disappointments was Shadow of the Colossus. After loving Ico so much (in my top5 of this generation), tedious colossus attacks with emptyness inbetween was a huge let-down. Nice colossus designs, but the game lacked interest felt too mechanical for me. To each its own, I guess.

I have a few that still bum me out to this day.
  1. Banjo Kazooie I.P. trashed with Nuts & Bolts -
Every fan of Banjo Kazooie just wanted a true Banjo game, especially after that misleading trailer came out implying that the 360 BK game in development was a traditional title. They made the ridiculous mistake of completely changing the genre of a series and releasing it as a mainline game. Noone ever argues that BK:NB was a bad kart racing/building game and almost everyone unanimously agrees that things would have been better if BK:NB was assigned to a different I.P. and that a true BK:Three was made. Nintendo doesn't market Mario Kart as a traditional Mario game akin to 3d Land/World, they instead brand it clearly as a spin-off series. The issue is that they didn't make BK:NB a spin off, they tried to cash in on the success of the previous entries in the series when all they really needed to do that was make a game like the previous titles instead of switching genres entirely.
  2. Duke Nukem Forever launching in the state that it did-
Any game in development hell for 14 years is not gonna be a cohesive triple A product, but the real issue is that the final product we got had literally no polish whatsoever. I know the story behind the game and how it was at one point being worked on by the devs in their apartment as a labor of love but the issue is that it launched in a state that's probably not too far off from their alpha build. If they had polished the gun-play to feel more impactful and responsive it could have made the rest of the issues with the game easier to look past.
  3. Rare being forced to work on shitty Kinect games that nobody ever wanted-
Regardless of what P.R. they may put out talented people don't throw that all away by choice to work on shovelware.

I can't imagine how disappointing this must have been back in the day.

It was absolutely horrible. The only saving grace was the hilarious death sound. However, the other sound effects sounded like the game was glitching and going to crash. We won't talk about just how hideous it looking in comparison at all.

Even today i chuckle at that death music.

Lunar: Dragon Song. I don't think I've bought an Ubisoft game since (I hate their DRM anyway). RUNNING around towns cost you HP and you couldn't target enemies in battle. Seriously.

Gears of War 2 multiplayer (except Horde). We went back to Gears 1 until 3 came out.

Dragon Age 2. Press for awesome and all...could see it was a train wreck despite good critic reviews. I loved Origins.

Dragon Quest 5/6 never coming to the SNES (I remember reading previews for 5).

DQ4 remake for PS1...see previous, same sort of thing happened.

Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 5.

No, they aren't bad games, in fact they are good, but both huge dissapointments to me.

RE 5 was a dissapointment because it throws away some of the things that make RE, the game doesn't even pretend that its horror, the story is some bland sci fi action movie, the gameplay isn't as good, worse bosses, worse designs, tentacle monsters, not very original , like the Gigante again, but this time not even a rail shooter.
RE6 has better combat, but the worst things of RE5 are amplified so much that it becomes a joke.

Final Fantasy VIII, XII, XIII: Until after XIII, which ultimately killed any future interest in the series, I used to look forward to new FF games. After enjoying IV, VI, and VII, I thought the series could do no wrong. Then VIII happened, which was Strike One. IX and X were better, and I give X-2 a pass, but after buying XII at launch... the magic was gone again as I hated the battle system and couldn't have cared less for the storyline. And then came XIII, which was a letdown in so many ways. Yuck.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: I bought this during its midnight launch, as a fan of the past CV games... but this, to me, wasn't a Castlevania. It was a second-rate mashup of a bunch of other games, missing a lot of the things that I expected from a Castlevania experience. Not only a disappointment... but one of my biggest gaming regrets.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon: Like Castlevania, I am a big fan of the Ace Combat games, so buying Assault Horizon was kind of a no-brainer. Despite the misstep that was Ace Combat 6, I believed in the Project Aces team and thought this would be a return to form. Boy, was I wrong.

Game Room: I spent a ton of money on this, only to see support erode inexplicably before ending just prior to (allegedly) getting Sunset Riders released. Sad that Krome went under, because I personally liked the idea here. It was as close to owning my own arcade as I'll probably ever get, and support dried up before its full potential was realized.

After being one of the first people of the public to see gameplay at Quakecon, Prey 2 being cancelled had me almost fainting in my room.

I was at that show! The actual game apparently looked considerably better than that 5 month old demo (debut in April, 2011 at Bethesda's Utah show).

“Our tech had progressed significantly past the live demo we ran at E3, Gamescom and PAX and was even more impressive. It’s my personal opinion that we would have been counted among the best looking games of the previous console generation.”

"Bethesda stated their reasons when they finally cancelled the game in October 2014, and needless to say we have our own perspective on the matter that differs from the reasons they stated,” Tim Gerritsen says.

“As we said in response in October, we feel that the quality of the game was well represented by the materials we displayed in numerous public demonstrations on behalf of Bethesda and we are disappointed that fans won’t be able to see our vision come to life. We remain proud of the work that we did."

PaperMarioStickerStarCover.jpg

I still think this is the cruelest joke the game industry has ever pulled on me.

"Remember all the stuff you loved about Paper Mario?!"

...

"That's all gone!"

...

"Enjoy!"

Why Nintendo? Why? This has been my biggest disappointment in years :(

I have a few that still bum me out to this day.

Everytime i see this gif all i can think of is JonTron lol

I still have to play part 2, but Broken Age left me very disappointed. I backed it instantly knowing that Tim Schafer was making an oldskool point 'n click for fans of his old ones. I felt incredibly deceived when I played the game. It wasn't made for fans of old PnC's at all, it felt like it was designed for modern audiences who never played a PnC before and it all felt insultingly simplified, like a watered-down adventure game.

It has its charms and it sure looks pretty, but it's severely lacking in challenging puzzles, it was short and felt very restrictive. Reading the RPS review of Part 2 doesn't instill much confidence tbh.

Street Fighter x Tekken. Man I was so in SF4 high during the announcement. Plus, Tekken is my favourite fighting game series AND WOW THAT GAME FUCKING SUCKED! £120 I put into that game. Got the special edition and an SFxT stick an for what? DLC scams, gems and timeouts.
Forced myself to get all the achievements, played hundreds of online matches, got my combos and stuff made, even attended to tournaments and in the end...it blew bums.

Fuck. That. Game.

Destiny was meant to be a cross between Boarderlands and Mass Effect, what we got in the end was too anaemic to warrant description

Metal Gear Solid 4.

Wouldn't have got a PS3 for almost another year if not for that game, and it wasn't just a disappointment, but a truly awful game.

Destiny

Everyone knows the reasons.

San Andreas

Racist stuff taken to whole new levels, couldn't enjoy it.

Wii

Man, Nintendo really sold out to the casuals, kids and gimmick crowd after that first year or so.
what?!

Wii being under powered takes the cake. I knew from that moment Nintendo would never be the same again. I was right. That single decision alienated 3rd party developers and set back their devs a full generation.

Dark Souls 2
Evolve
MCC

All fun games but were disappointing in their own ways. Dark Souls 2 was not on par with previous installments. Evolve was a running simulator. MCC was broken.

Final Fantasy XIII - complete trash, only game in the mainline series I didn't complete

Perfect Dark Zero - incredibly disappointing campaign, seemed like it was from the GC/PS2/Xbox era

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts - fun game, but a terrible way to bring back Banjo after such a long hiatus - it could have been an acceptable spin off after a proper sequel

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - so boring and overstayed its welcome by about 20 hours for me, felt like a chore

Jak II - good game on its own, but I vastly preferred the original's look, feel, and gameplay and would have loved for them to stick with it

Apart from the whole Silent Hills debacle going on right now, I think the last time I got so letdown was Final Fantasy XIII.

You know how you watch The Lost World and can't stop seeing a generic action movie instead something truly wondrous like the first Jurassic Park? That's what that felt like to me. I mean gameplay wise, it seemed generally fine with the exception of that whole corridor RPG shtick, but the entire world and characters just put me off so bad. This was not the FF I fell in love with, nor the next-gen iteration I thought it would live up to.

I've come to accept that, but XV can still surprise me and I've yet to try out XIV.

Silent Hills is number 1, I'm still salty.

The initial DmC trailer was a kick to the balls.

SWTOR announcement was terrible too(because it destroyed any chance of a true KOTOR 3)

I'm rarely let down by games but GTA IV still stings. It just wasn't fun.

Silent Hills being cancelled hurts and not getting KotoR 3.

Master of Orion 3 - They got rid of pretty much everything I liked from the previous games, and made most of the game a choice between tedious micromanagement and letting the AI do everything for you.

Fable 3 - I liked Fable 2 a lot, though it was far from perfect. Fable 3 lacked a lot of the charm that 2 had, and made the existing problems like bad interface and massive input lag even worse.

Brink- Lots of hype, and it seemed cool at first, but everything about it quickly devolved. There was no point in having millions of possible guns after you figured out which ~3 were actually worth using, and the game flow became quickly very campy, boring, and repetitive.

Super Monday Night Combat - I loved the original MNC as a shooter with some MOBA elements. But they left it in a somewhat broken state, missing many features that would have been necessary for competitive play and longevity, in favor of making SMNC instead. But SMNC leaned far more toward slower MOBA-style gameplay, and a lot of the original game's coherent theme and setting got a bit lost as they tried to make it more weird and wacky. The worst thing about SMNC is that it basically killed MNC.

Hoo boy, where do I start...

  • Pokémon X/Y
I didn't like it. I appreciate the easiness of building competitive teams, but everything else ranges from "meh" to "bad" (graphics, OST, story...)
  • Final Fantasy XIII trilogy
I played FFXIII when it was released and quite liked it. However, the other two entries are questionable, and I never understood why Square had fixated to churn these out. For fuck's sake, outside of some character and enemy models they didn't even recycle many assets!
  • Chrono Cross
Good game, but throwing Trigger's ending and resolution into a fire leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.
  • TWEWY countdown
    Fuck you SE.
  • Nintendo playing it safe (?)
I dunno how to phrase it better, but I absolutely love Nintendo's eclectic output on DS and Wii: things like Ouendan/EBA, Another Code/Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk, Picross 3D... They released interesting games at the start of 3DS' and Wii U's life (Kid Icarus, W101, Bayonetta 2), but it seems that now they've settled on "safer" games. Here's hoping that Splatoon ends up being a terrific game!
  • Persona 3 Velvet/Complete/Platinum/Whatever
I really need a definitive P3 game, something that merges FES's overworld and anime FMVs with P3P's gameplay and story enhancements. Throw in the FeMC path and The Answer (with selectable difficulty) and I'll fork over large amounts of money.

Definitely this, I mean nobody expected it to be a masterpiece. I just wanted a half decent shooter that would make me laugh occasionally. Instead we got a fourteen year old boring mess.

DukeNukemForever.jpg

The Answer in Persona 3: FES - It wasn't that it was bad, but it was more enjoyable watching it rather than playing it.

The Order: 1886 - To me, it was the SAO of video games. It starts off decently, but it goes downhill, marred by cliches and confining characters to overused archetypes. I do hope that RAD is given a chance to do a sequel because they have the groundwork to make a terrific game.

Final Fantasy XIII - It's not that it was a bad game, but compared to previous Final Fantasies it falls way short. Also, I wasn't a fan of most of the characters.

Going from Bioshock > Bioshock 2 > Bioshock Infinite in about a month. I realized how much I disliked Infinite immediately. I was pretty hyped for it too. Another one was Metroid Other M. I thought Nintendo x Team Ninja would be a great combo, but it turned out to be a pretty terrible game.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person who really wants a definitive P3 game (my avatar gives it away xP).

Star Ocean 3. Star Ocean 2 is still one of my favorite games, but I didn't like any of the characters or the story and it shit all over the previous games in the series with it's twist. And I had to read about the twist online because I didn't like the game enough to make it that far.
Borderlands 2. I can't really say what I don't like about this game. There's just something about it I don't care for. I loved Borderlands but it felt like more of the same but not in a good way. Also I fucking hated fighting all the Loaders.

Oh and Spore was a pretty big disappointment too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnA
Goddamnit

This one was the worst for me, and ironically I was there waiting for it since day 1 from that video. The game seemed pretty much done; we had to wait month by month for a game that was released three years later (it felt like much, much longer because across precisely that time period my life completely changed). The released game had, at best, one fourth of all the features promised (and shown) in that video from 2005: it was a soulless husk. It managed to top Devil May Cry 2 as my biggest disappointment of all time, especially since that one was eventually set right with DMC3 but nothing ever became the game that was promised to us with Spore.

And yeah, subconsciously my indifference towards No Man's Sky is probably at least partially rooted in this disappointment.
