I bought one of those $9-10 knock-off controllers from eBay. It's okay. The face buttons are fine, and the analog sticks feel nice, but the d-pad feels mushy, and the shoulder buttons feel like they have a small amount of excess plastic that gets in the way when pressed. Also, the receiver mold is a bit large and difficult to fit in the controller port. Whenever I plug something into the USB port, the controller loses signal, and I have to unplug the receiver. Also, on ocassion, when I start my PS2, the left stick kind of drifts, but corrects itself quickly.
The Logitech controllers are too expensive for me (around $30 with receiver), but the knock-offs are serviceable, especially since I mostly play RPGs. I may take it apart and see if I can swap the d-pad from an old DS3 I have, and maybe file down the L2/R2 buttons so they don't scrape, then it would be fine.
to be fair, the original d-pad could well be defined as mushy as well.
