Games are about fun. "Forced chatting" with people you wouldn't socialize with in real life is net negative to the fun factor. Ever take a job and simply hate it because of the people you have to work with but love it when you move on to a different group of people?

If not then you lucked out.

The game could've made about it being opt-in or friend's only but it's not the end of the world that it is lacking the feature.

Well they could always charge for it.

Charge for voice chat..and have those people separated from those who want free online with no voice chat.

That way chat will require a parent/adult to use a credit card to enable the service..kids are protected, people who want chat can get chat....and Nintendo make more money

This is my exact situation. Which is why I dont' care about voice chat in this game because we'll use skype as always.

For me the much more egregious error is lack of a proper party system (even after the August update from the sounds of it). It's not easy to get exactly 4 or 8 people. If I want to play co-op with just one or two friends at a given time, I'm basically S.O.L.
 
Defending this kind of decision is incredibly short sighted if you want a system that is not replaced quickly and that sells enough to attract 3rd parties and significant retailer support.

What games have you played that force you to chat with people? That sounds brutal.

All the games I've played with voice chat always seemed to include a handy mute function, and they never actively forced you to chat. Does it just disconnect you if your mic isn't being actively used? That sounds terrible.

I don't really care, but they should at least let us voice chat with friends, I wouldn't mind the lack of voice chat with randoms.

Can they at least give us a way to give other players an alert that they should go to another area.

That's a terrible excuse though. How is removing it any better than having it set to friends only? Or off by default? You don't need to remove it to protect yourself from all the mean kids calling you names.
 
I'm going to make this simple for everyone.

Here's the scenario, Nintendo has voice chat as an Option (Option, let me repeat the word just to be clear) and it's default status is OFF.

"But Chad, I don't want my ki-"
It's already off.

"But Microsoft Chad, nintendo doesn't ne-"

Shut that lip, it's already off by defaul. Just don't turn it on.

It makes 99.8% of all posts in this thread invalid and pointless.

Then you have a good chuck of people who WANT voice caht able to use Voice Chat, this may gain more players, and fix up a bit of Nintendo current reputation, a win win.

Here's another Scenario, the voice Chat is on by default, wow, that menu before you play with the off button, so hard to press... It's not.

Well the thread is now solved, there's literally no reason any longer to complain about putting voice chat in the game or defending NOT putting voice chat in the game, if you still think Voice Chat as an Option is somehow bad there's something wrong somewhere, I don't know what it is though, but those padded rooms may be coming for you.


I mean I read the first 25 pages of this thread, and then the last 11, and it's all basically the same bad excuses and analogies, along with people omitting information or pretending/saying things don't have Y so why should you have X as an option.

Very simple solution, optional voice chat off my Default don't turn it on. It actually destroys almost all arguments in this thread outside the arguments that are so nonsensical (Monkey bars) that I don't even count them as arguments.

Then no voice chat is probably a good idea. For those of you who and planning to have a great time with your online buddies here, can't you just use Skype? Or whatever? Seems simpler than expecting Nintendo to change their Draconian ways. I don't think this will really affect sales much one way or the other anyway. I thought all the kids used Skype these days anyway. Built in voice chat is shit AT LEAST half the time

And your solution for the performance hit? It's supposedly the reason voice chat is only allowed before and after matches in Smash and I have had experience with games taking a hit for implementing it.


People were amazed how good they could connect with people all the way in Japan even though their in America.

In the unlikely event of that being the case, having it off wouldn't (likely) do anything to the supposed hit. I am unsure of how Nintendo or their servers would handle this thing but, generally, if its baked in I would imagine that the data for voice is always being trafficked, you're just choosing to ignore it like a glorified mute. You'd still take a hit on bandwidth/performance.

Someone can feel free to correct me.

In a situation the option is there but off by default you whole post here is irrelevant,.It will be there for the people who want it, it will also benefit Nintendo with possibly more players and helping fix up (a bit) their reputation.

If this can't get through your head then i don't know what to tell you because these arguments where people keep running in circles aren't working.

Yeah you know, games like Pokemon Pearl or Call of Duty, with their voice chat they were clearly going for hardcore audiences. The casuals were totally turned off by those games. And the PS4, man. The OS party system with voice chat support? A real turn-off to those casuals.

I don't think you know how voice chat works, if there IS a performance hit (which doesn't seem like anything but an assumption looking through this thread and since the game doesn't have it) it would only have an impact if it's on, if it's on, it would then have to process the mic, and be on wait for your voice. You are getting "mute" and "Off" mixed up,.

I understand people seem to have gone nuts in this thread but people come on this is super simple.

2 options:

1. Optional Voice chat off by default, don't turn it on.

2. Option Voice chat on by default, turn it off before you even start the match in that starting menu, or in the options before you even go online.

So simple, what's the issue? Nothing. There's nothing. Every single excuse in this thread outside of the nonsensical arguments that don't even count (Monkey bars?) is literally pointless.

Because your whole argument is built on a false premise. Having party chat at an OS level completely negates the absolute need for voice chat with randoms because your communication will be limited to those who are on your carefully protected friend list.

The issue I'm seeing in this thread is that a lot of people defending the lack of voice chat are completely ignoring the concept of party chat, which in fact, if they actually went online on PS4 and Xbox One, would make them realise has all but killed off voice chat because everyone just talks to their friends in private groups.

The lack of chat and the rise of group chat I really think hurt games like COD, yea, you had to mute some people sometimes, but the random I interaction with ransoms sometimes led to the most entertaining gaming.

In terms of Splatoon, as a parent, and with this being marketed at kids mainly (kids TV channels are blanketed with ads now) I think its fine it has no chat, I don't want my kids chatting with strangers yet (yes I know parental controls exist, but many parents are clueless about games)

Side note for another thread...SEE SONY, IF YOU MARKETED KID TARGETED GAMES ON KID TARGETED CHANNELS, KIDS WILL WANT YOUR GAMES.,/soapbox :). Would it have killed them to put a few LBP commercials on Disney channels???

No, no. My question revolves around what "Off" does in the end. I spoke of the "Off" option as being a glorified mute because I am unsure if that is how it is or would be treated in a scenario where it exists. Now that I think about it, it would have to stop querying the server when its off.

That said, they had this reasoning for keeping it off always in Smash. I'd imagine the reason being that if any one has it on during a match and it impacts their connection, it impacts everyone. Splatoon would likely suffer similarly.

This shows a lack of common sense.

There are 2 options, let me break it down.

Option one is that Voice Chat is off by Default and is optional.

Option two is voice chat is on by default and is optional.

The first one instantly destroys whatever logic you though you had in this post.

The second does this as well, since you usually wont' hear any voices until you start the match or go to a lobby past some menus, so it's the perfect time to switch it off in that menu with that big off button.

Again, there's literally no excuse to not put in optional voice chat, none zero, especially if off by default, nothing. So please just except that an optional Voice chat is fine, very simple.

You have no idea of the cost or difficulty of implementing a voice chat system. Neither do I.

There are hundreds of possible reasons it doesn't have it. I don't know what those reasons are, and I'm pretty sure you don't either.

LoL is on a platform that supports system level voice chat programs.

Journey is not a competitive shooter.

Hearthstone... See LoL. Also it's a 1 on 1 MP game. Who are you going to chat with for team strategy? Yourself? Your opponent? What a shit argument.

I can't believe this is so hard to comprehend for some people.

Whether I know or not means nothing because I'm only here providing a very simple reason to many people making the same 5 arguments how a default off option does NOTHING to the game.

Cost and difficulty have nothing to do with it, it's another moving goal post excuse, again, off by default, even if VC was a buggy mess and crashed your wii every 5 seconds, that won't happen unless you turn it on so everything you said was pointless.

Your reading comprehension has failed. They kept it off in Smash under the specifically stated reasoning of it being to prevent performance hits. That would be that, if anyone had it on, regardless of options, it would affect everyone because if one person laggs in an online Smash round, everyone laggs. This may not be true and they may have been pulling shit out of their ass, but that was their stated reasoning.

I am speaking in hypotheticals of the reasoning. I am not on the "yay Splatoon has no voice chat" side.
 
All Defenders in this thread outside the ones who backed out are all insane. No other explanation and fits the actual definition, not even an insult.

I found it even more irritating that in a scenario that they put an optional Voice Chat feature with the default being off, I still get people who try to counter it with meaningless babaloo ignoring the fact this scenario makes their whole point invalid.

Off by default people, this isn't hard to understand, it's not.

Yea, that's dumb.

Nintendo needs someone to help them implement a family safe way of chatting online in games.

They could have invested in making a monitoring system for profanity. I'v seen it used on professional software, like Microsoft conference room app.

Bad words get recognized and that person get's muted or kicked from Conference room conversation.

If Nintendo invested in something that they could control, I could see them being the first for clean multiplayer.

I hate saying this but you're not very intelligent and you talking about my reading comprehension shows you're out of loop with reality.

Why? Simple, VC is off by default, what performance hit will there be? If people who want to use it turn it on and get a hit ok, sure, fine, it's there, and it will give Nintendo higher rep and will possibly gain more players.

Also you're Smash goal post moving doesn't work, you are comparing a completely different game to a game not yet out, and implying that Splatoon will have the same problem with Voice Chat on mics with no info (and also ignoring other games that don't have big performance hits.)

Your post changes nothing, it's off by default, what issues would there be? Nothing NOTHING.

No; I said the only way you can know that there definitely are no issues whatsoever would be if that feature had been built, implemented, tested then removed.

If you believe that every videogame by default has every possible feature already implemented, and then devs strip them out one by one to leave the game they wanted to make, then that would explain why constantly saying they should just add it because it definitely cannot possibly cause any problems, then I regret to inform you that this is not how games are made.

Sorry, there's no excuse regardless of what your views are on your companies product. If you put a game out that's played competitively, or loved by more than die hards, then voice chat regardless of the negatives, will help your game have legs.

That PC analogy someone posted from a dev on twitter is the most rediculous things i'v ever read.

PC is open to Ventrillo, teamspeak, tinychat, skype, mumble, most of which can have open dialogue, if people are on the same server.

Even on steam if people are invited can have a whole group talking while the game is running.

And most games have open dialogue between teams.

LOL, hearthstone like other's have noted are not good examples.

It's like a company putting in an optional Software Feature to make all colors only black and Blue in the game, which could cause your system to crash, but if it's off nothing happens.
