Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

I dunno man, that image is giving me flashbacks to daggerfall's maps.

It's nothing like Daggerfall.

You should really play Valkyrie Profile and see what it's really like.

It's exactly like Castlevania 2D maps, but you could just have room that go into the foreground and background as an additional layer.

Or at least see a video of dungeon exploration if you can't play it.

I would have loved/preferred Kojima to be on board but I just have to roll my eyes at this. This isn't so far off (like a Dawn of Sorrow/Portrait of Ruin downgrade) from previous post SOTN Castlevania to be worth this sort of scorn. I also feel like you're throwing around buzzwords when you call this generic or Miriam "big-titted" and shit since that isn't even true LOL.

Buzzwords? I don't recall using any, actually. And yeah, big titted.

And it looks a lot more like this:

Than this:

Even leaving aside the boilerplate, boneless anime faces, it's the costume and color choices that really feel less elegant and mature. We would have been better served by more black, gold, and crimson and less puce, magenta, and teal. More attention to period costume and less to modern pop stars and lingerie. This stuff's supposed to be Gothic, so go past mall goth make it Gothic.

David Hayter stretchgoal? Not exactly complaining but I want Cam Clarke if we are headed in this direction. My brain yearns for his amazing hamminess.

This will reach its goal in no time. I'm not backing this kickstarter because I never do, never will back any kickstarter.

But if product is good, I will buy PS4 version on psn.

I want to back the game, but i'm worried about Inticreates involvement after the whole Mighty No.9 debacle. Before putting money on the project, i need to see some kind of commitment from the development team about them trying to achieve the same type of graphics shown on the artwork shown on the Kickstarter page, or a style more similar to Guilty Gear Xrd than Mighty No.9.

This is still too fresh in my memory:

I pledged $60.

I have a few concerns: I'd have preferred 2D over 2.5D, the art direction only looks OK, and I fear I'll won't get Japanese VAing, but hey this is an Iga game so I'm literally voting with my wallet.

Hope it turns out awesome!

Wow, you really know Castlevania's style. What kind of art do you make in real life?

Ýeah, I'm a bit bummed out about this, too, as I had hoped for Kojima to make her brilliant comeback. But it's passable.

I just want the art book but paying $150 for an art-book is WHOOOOOOOOOO. No. They can't make the art-book digital and put it on the Steam release or something? IGA plz.

I'm just happy that the art book is likely going to be upgraded to hardcover from the stretch goal. Was dissapointed at first when I looked at the backing rewards before looking at the stretch goals.

The absolute best CEs for me are just the game, steelbook, soundtrack, and an art book. All in a nice box that isn't going to get crushed. Hate figures, calenders, shirts, or digital shit. Just give me the the goods and I'll pay for it every time. This almost hits that mark.

Norio Wakamoto VA would have been awesome.

im in for a $100 regardless of the graphics, considering that IGA is actually a game designer and Inafune is a "business man"

also no mobile/portable stretch goals gives me better faith than the trainwreck that is mighty no 9

That'll be another stretch goal, or Hayter will take a pay-cut like he did for Twin Snakes and bring him, maybe?

Ok so just so we're all aware, I'm posting this from the Kickstarter page's FAQ for my own peace of mind:

"WHY 2.5D?

IGA decided to go with 2.5D for this project for both financial and artistic reasons. All decisions in game development involve trade-offs, and for Bloodstained a 2.5D world built on Unreal Engine 4 was the right choice to balance development time, graphical fidelity, budget, and scope. [...]"

Please note the "All images are concept art, not actual in-game screens. Not representative of final product"

We good? Everyone sees dat shit right on the KS page? Ok.

That would imply people actually read the KS pages. Even with the big obnoxious watermarks that say Concept Art, and saying that concept art isn't representative of the final project, there will still be people that complain how it doesn't look like the concept art.

I would love to back this but a full $60 for the physical edition? Hoo boy thats some cash.

Is this game going to be sizeable enough to be worth that? I realize its a Kickstarter so theres no real way to know but GAF what do you think?

So this guy gave me Symphony of the Night, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia.

Of course I'm in. I want this to work out, get released, and be a good game. This is all that I wish.

Backed for that sweet signed box, art book, and more ;)

Super excited for this game, and stoked about Michiru Yamane and Ippo Yamada being on board!

Kinda sad that Ayami Kojima is too busy, but the current art is pretty great too :)

Can't wait to see more in the future!

I'll never understand why people thought mock-ups / concept art was going to 100% parallel final game footage. It never does. Ever. If you look at early WoW models, or early God of War models, the game looks completely different. It's nearly impossible to show the audience what your game is going to absolutely look like before you've even made it.

Toejam and Earl's kickstarter faced something similar where they actually had a semi-functional alpha (more than most KS's have) and people were flipping shit over the designs. Because people have basically no idea how games are made they just photoshopped some screenshots and everyone's fears went away. It was silly.

Are a bunch of people in here trying to convince themselves that Castlevania wasn't anime since basically forever (classic vania excluded)?

Because it has been anime since then... quite obviously.

There is anime, and then anime. Even the game people are claiming they loved the style of, OoE was still anime, just not this kind.

scan the artbook for me

Yeah, sucks that people can be so shallow, I care more about the gameplay aspect.

This seems like a rather important featureset to be mentioned once in passing in the video and never expanded upon in the KS text.

I'd love full coop, but I'd expect something more like specific co-op missions for now.

Miriam's design definitely comes across as Shanoa's little sister. Which on one hand is cool because Shanoa's design is super rad, but for the same reason I just want straight-up Shanoa again.

I expect him to be the second playable character mentioned in stretch goals.

The colors don't bother me. Muramasa was IMO the best 2D game of last generation and it was very colorful indeed.

I imagine that just like the other Castelvanias that what it lacks in game-time it'll have in replay value. I'd expect it to be of a similar scope to SotN.

This seems like one of the things they will slowly reveal over the KS period to keep hype levels up and just forgot to remove from the pitch video.

I expect him to be the second playable character mentioned in stretch goals.

Then why mention him in the backer video if he's just a stretch goal.

Also, the lines in the video where he says there will be more enemies, weapons, etc if he gets more money... where are the stretch goals for those? Those are HANDS down more important to me than hayter voice acting or a harder difficulty.

Dropped $100. IGA found a way to appeal to all my current obsessions: Metroidvania, item crafting, Yamane soundtrack, and further humiliation of Konami.

We're all forgetting which recent CV entries really took a step back to a more classic art style, why The Lords of Shadow saga had some great western styled gothic art, but I guess most just skip past this lot because it's Lords of Shadow.
Mirror of Fate has the best Simon Belmont design

Guys, Ori and the mother flipping blind forest is a 2.5D Metroidvania and was made by a very small team by guys from all over the world. They didn't even work in the same building. Yet, it's one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen.

2.5D can look fantastic if passion and effort is put into it.

That being said, I am a huge Castlevania fan and I realize that this is a different game, but I am not a fan of the art direction I've seen so far. But that is subjective.

His DS adventures had a good amount of replay value behind them, like the chance to play as different characters to change up the method of which you fight your way through the game, as well as harder, more difficult ways to play through it given to you upon completion. These types of games have been encouraging repeat visits since their inception. It's a safe bet Bloodstained will be no exception if it hits all of its goals.
