Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

Local coop is in already though.
Oh, crap, missed that. Yeah, guess it's just a matter of getting the money for online code then!
Just make like Portrait of Ruin and assign a "leader" player that can change rooms, also use HoDespair features for communication and stuff.
Well, true, but that's kind of what I meant: PoR was designed with two characters, whereas this seems built around one character. So how would they make it work with a sudden extra character? Like DS3 where the're just there for cinematics, or what?

I must be one of the only human beings on these boards that doesn't want every outfit in every game I play to be realistic or practical. I love busy designs. I love ridiculous outfits. I love weird costumes and assymetrical nonsensical armor plates in places they aren't needed. I love belt skirts and half-shirts and impractical silliness.

Needless to say, I love her design. I wouldn't care if they changed a thing. Hell, I'd also probably be one of the only people to not give a single fuck if they anime'd it up some more. Give her one wing. Go balls out (figuratively).

I'm not a fan of that particular implementation, but I'd like to see a weapon change IGA's "slash slash, backdash/evade, slash slash" combat system up a little. Give the enemies a bit more HP and make them slightly more aggressive to change up the combat. Tie it to that weapon only so it is more a "challenge run"/alternate take on combat than the main focus.

I like the Metroidvania formula, but honestly it's gotten a bit stale. Furr--er--"Dust"'s combat is kinda brain dead easy with that projectile and twirl attack, I'd like to see a bit more engagement.

SotN's... directional magic system wasn't the best, but I'd like to see a weapon take that style and change the combat up a little.

Brawl combat systems sucks ass. Simple combat is where it is. Weapons (glyphs) on two hands where a nice addition. But a combo system? Get this shit out of my Igavania, please.

So a Nintendo release is not happening, even with the surpassed funding goals?

I'm not portbegging, just want an official yes or no answer.

They've basically teased Vita/WiiU stretch goals being much further down the list of stretch goals due to the fact they'd have to essentially make a second version of the game to work on those platforms as UE4 won't work on them. Don't expect to see them till we're seeing at least 2.5-3 million dollar stretch goals.

What Castlevania games would you guys recommend to a relative Castlevania newbie.

Last I remember I've only played Symphony of the Night(which was fucking amazing) and one of the games for GBA(I feel like it was the first one, I never beat it though). Hows Dracula X Chronicles?

Make alternate versions of cutscenes, 2d castlevanias never had expensive cutscenes, just some more budget making extra dialog boxes : p

Son of a bitch, after the original 10 "Design a Weapon" $2,000 tiers were claimed, they added another set of 10 but it now costs $2,100.

I wonder how much I really want the "_______ of the Unknown Soldier" to be in this game... Or even what kind of weapon it would be. I wonder if Miriam would enjoy wielding a magical girl staff :D

Gunaxe or Gunhalberd.

Man, 1.8 million.... must be such a good feeling getting cash for a dream project on the basis of your reputation alone. I'm really excited to see how this turns out!

1.8 mil for a project of this scope isn't that much. I'm sure it will help pay bills, put food on the table, and secure new funding from their outside investors, but it's really not that much money on its own for this kind of game. Like just back of the paper estimate for two years development on the staff they seem they'll have on hand would be at least 3 million (but probably much more).

But it isn't Activision, EA, or Ubisoft who are deluded... It's everyone else trying to be like them. But neither Capcom nor Konami nor most other companies can be like them because these three publishers, Activision, EA, and Ubisoft, release the same set of games year after year. Every year will have a Call of Duty, an Assassin's Creed, a FIFA, and a Madden and those four games are guaranteed to be in the ten top sellers of a particular year. It's more like a top six with four IPs as undefeatable constants.

Compare this to GTA or Smash Bros. which are huge IPs, but never have annual releases... or something like the Halo franchise, which is also a huge annual IP, but one that could not even break the top ten. FIFA, Madden, Call of Duty, and Assassin's Creed are constant annual top tenners.

Dispenses lunar punishment.

Oh good

IGA has been overwhelmed by the support his game has gotten so far, and now that he’s back in Japan he’s ready to get back to work. When you back now you aren’t just putting a down payment on the next stretch goal—you’re adding dollars to the development budget that wouldn’t be there otherwise. All your support will show in a final game that’s bigger, better, and more polished than it could have been without your help.

Hopefully that can end the debate/whining.
But i know it won't.

I think I'd rather they just make a separate game with that kind of funding. Get enough money to straight up make an 8-bit/16-bit styled spin off (more akin to arcade visuals of that period perhaps?) that hits the currently slated consoles AND Wii U/Vita/3DS(/PS3/360 because well fuck it) perhaps. Something a bit akin to classic CV to match with Igavania.

EDIT: Though it seems they're going with the basic idea of just fine tuning the game more and more with the money rather than bloating it beyond their capability to handle. After other Kickstarters that's definitely for the best.

After 2 games you call yourself a newbie? Anyway try Aria of Sorrow on GBA.

What about 2?!
Kind of redundant in the face of what Iga's games were like. Those were more like a more fully realized version of the same thing albeit liberally cribbing from Metroid.

On the other hand, I can see some aspects being worth revisiting IE encompassing the landscape and not just a castle (OoE came close but that was broken into stages), but that's more appropriate as the basis for a new game entirely.

They did nothing really. It's third party support that makes it impossible for it to happen. You need third parties willing to make games for that platform to make a port to Wii U financially viable. At that time they were pushing for major third parties to pick up that engine versus their more indie friendly focus now.

Kinda my point. 2 with its multiple towns and locations, was an entire world not just one location recreated in 2D. There's room to explore that sentiment a bit more.

Which is better with a new game, it'd probably be easier to do justice to CV1/3/X and their ilk than to attempt to cover a small scale version of 2 whose core gameplay is roughly the same. Better for a new game borrowing more from that, retro style or not.

I received a Kickstarter update email (apparently the second) and it had this to say about the "8-bit level".
One section of the castle will feature an area that Miriam can traverse in beautiful retro graphics. We've been referring to this section as the “8-bit Level” internally, although it may be closer to 16+ bit depending on how we mix it with the full game. While a full-blown 8-bit game doesn't fit into the game's budget, backer support will allow us to have fun with the development and create a little retro magic in our game.

"Although it may be closer to 16+ bit depending on how we mix it with the full game" is probably the most interesting tidbit. I'd prefer the visuals to resemble SOTN if the "level" is just a hidden area of the castle, but a more linear "level" in the "classic-vania" style might fit more for "8-bit" visuals (though a Rondo of Blood look would be cool). Personally I hope whatever they make is as optional as possible, as it would be distracting I think for the "level" to be a mandatory part of each playthrough. I'd even prefer them to keep the area from being necessary for a 100% run, the best implementation (if the "level" must be incorporated directly into the game's world) honestly would be certain item that if equipped transforms a certain area (or the whole castle with more funding) into a 16-bit style. That way, the location is only "retro" should the player find the easter egg item and choose to use it.

I'm pretty sure its a simple issue of hardware. While more powerful, the WiiU gpu is a bit too old compared to what is available inside the ouya or most recent smartphones

DXC is a remake of Rondo which is a great Classicvania. It also includes the original Rondo and SotN. As for Iga games I would recommend you play them in order: Aria, Dawn, Portrait, and Order. IMO if you go straight to let's say OoE, your appreciation for the other DS games diminishes greatly. Like playing P3FES after Persona 4.

I was thinking the scope of this game would be less then sotn, but with the new support tiers we are now guaranteed 20 weapons just from backer rewards. Hopefully it's not just 19 swords that we will use for 10 minutes before finding a better one.

If I buy older castlevania games that Igarashi has developed (such as symphony of the night on PSN), Does IGA still get royalties for it?

Basically I want to support IGA, but if he doesn't get any money from it and only Konami does, forget it.

99.9 percent sure he won't. He was likely paid on a salary, no royalties or anything. Kojima was probably the same way too and we know how high profile he is.

Yeah, Iga wouldn't see a penny of that, and Konami would see all of it.

I think the only way to do that at this point is to buy used hard copies of each of the older games since they're probably past their prime in making money.

This reminds me. I already have physical copies of SOTN, Circle of the Moon (I bought the GBA back in the day because of this game), Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, and Dawn of Sorrow.

I adore the Metriodvania games but still need to get Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia. I haven't kept up much with handhelds as much anymore and luckily those seem to still be cheap brand new cause the GBA games are ridiculous expensive new.

Order of Ecclesia is really the best of the bunch too, except SotN obviously.

Taco. Taco of the Unknown Soldier. Do it.

I'm imagining Miriam wielding a gigantic taco and whacking the enemies with it right now.

I don't know if Iga would let me put that in the game.

Either that or the attack button just has her take a bite and chew for a bit.

Edit: Actually that sounds like an awesome idea. Time to start a kickstarter to try to fund it imo.

I've been playing OoE, and while pretty nifty so far (beat the Skeleton Cave), it's not anywhere near as good as SotN.

Nice to have a female hero for a change though

Heh. Finish it first and your opinion will change.
