Batman: Arkham Knight - Review Thread

Can someone tell me about the costumes?

Can you were a different one(Dark Knight Returns/Batman Beyond) right from the beggining? I don't dislike the orginal costume they've designed, but I like the DKR/BB ones better.

Do costumes show up in ALL cut-scenes or are half pre-rendered like in Arkham City?

+Story beats are great, no filler on missions. Nice puzzle work built into bigger enemy fights due to enemy variety.

[...] it tells such an incredible story in so many new and unique ways, it’s impossible to ignore.

I found this funny. The story is apparently either hot garbage or the best thing since sliced bread. :D

I think all cutscenes are real time this time.

Do you have to beat the game first in order to change the costume? That is what I want to know.

ITS SO CLOSE I CAN TASTE IT ON MY TONGUE

Well, it's not like we don't have two games to draw conclusions from. :P I imagine the quality of the plot will be the same as the previous two. Whether that's good or bad will depend on you.

Getting kinda of sick of the no Xbox One versions for reviews. I wanna know how both versions run. Not just the one you fixed up real pretty to show off.

I don't really know how reviews work. But if devs/publishers don't get them a lot of time to review, maybe they only have time to test one version? They have the reviews out early, so you would think with this game, they would have time to test both and tell people. Hmm.

When I had a PS3 and a 360, I would always just get the 360 version, as I had no idea if the PS3 version would run well. I would also just assume by default, the 360 version was superior (which was the case for most of the multiplat titles). Even if I had only owned the PS3 that gen, I still would have wanted to know what the performance was like, before springing $60 on it.

Careful, you'll get some people here dogpiling you for being wary.

Which is stupid, because even if your only option to play this is on the X1, as a consumer, you still want to know how it performs. Whether it's worth buying at launch, or waiting etc.

Batman doesn't do this alone he has a team all helping with the detective stuff. So no day time gameplay, this is Batman!

I'd think you'd run into some major pacing problems with that kind of setup. Not to mention it heavily interferes with the immediacy of the situation Gotham is in.

Haven't played it so there's only so much I can say about it. The batmobile combat just doesn't look interesting. It looks very repetitive without much introduced to keep it fresh. Looks like they tried to keep a sense of Batman's combos while in the batmobile rather than designing something completely new for it. If I was in charge of designing it I probably would keep it super brief and visceral rather than drawn out. I'd also get Batman himself involved like he ejects out and lands on one of the bigger tanks and gels it while the batmobile continues firing on the others in autopilot etc. Either that or I wouldn't have waves of tanks fighting Batman to begin with.

Not to mention that the entire point of the Arkham games is they take place over the course of one night.

well fuck all of you then

Joking...or am I...lol

so what is going on with their Special edition and Collector's edition? Cancelled, delayed, what? Anyone talking about this?

I actually don't think those quotes contradict one another. It sounds like typical action movie plot where the overall narrative is weak and the dialogue a string of cliches, but its still has some fun and tense moments.

Batmobile Edition got canned because of QC issues but the Limited Edition, with statue, is good to go and not delayed. It looks like one gaffer's LE already shipped and mine was just updated today to include release date delivery.

12 hrs of story content is short, whichever way you want to spin it.

I want to murder this line of thinking.

you are entitled to your opinion, but if I could actually go out and exterminate this actual thought from the world I would.

I've had 2-3 hour gaming experiences that were transcendent. I've also had 20-30 hour experiences where I would willingly sue the developer to try to get that time added back onto my life..

The actual hours and minutes it takes to complete a game ironically has NOTHING to do with a game being too short or too long.

Does the IGN video review contain many spoilers?

Someone earlier posted it's VERY Spoiler Heavy. I would stay away, based on what some posters have said. Then again, I have I. Not watched it. II. I think it can be sort of subjective, when it comes to what people define as heavy spoilers.

Just thought I would tell you what I saw one poster say (don't want you feeling spoiled).

I've skimmed a bunch of the linked reviews... not a one even tackles performance or bugs or anything like that.

I wonder if that just means it runs absolutely great and it never even entered into their consideration, or....

So from what ive read this game has multiple endings and you need to go on the grind thru side story filler to see the full ninja you are the bat ending?

Witcher 3 last month and now Batman AK this month. Don't think I'm getting anything else until September except for a new Gsync monitor!

Wow just read that. Makes me hope that PC version runs well with no hiccups. I didn't buy Arkham City at launch for PC, so I don't know if that released running smooth out the gate. But hearing that the PS4 version is that smooth, just wow. So excited/happy.

PC version ran pretty well at launch minus a few select Nvidia specific effects which could be turned off.

This forever. Games like Journey, Limbo, Valiant Hearts, Transistor and Braid have provided me with some of the most beautiful, poignant, thought-provoking moments I've ever experienced in games. On the flip side, 20+ hour games like Alien: Isolation are so overly padded they become a joyless slog. I picked up Alien on release day and while it's a good game, it's now mid-June and I'm on chapter 16 after 19 hours, unsure if I'll ever go any farther because that game has no reason to be any longer than 6-8 hours. Just the thought of going any further makes me feel exhausted.

Yes. Games can ABSOLUTELY be 12 hours or shorter, and be much the better for it. Not everything needs to be Fallout or Skyrim.

I wouldn't be so sure, this time the story is written by someone else than the previous two games. So it could be wildly different in tone/style/quality.

Have any reviews commented on the game's friendliness to new players? I never had time for the other games, so am I just out of luck for this game?

One of the reviews had 12 hours for main 22+ hours for all content, which is fine, since I tend to take twice as the average long no matter what the game is and sounds like there is a new game +.

I haven't seen any of the Batman movies, but enjoy the games, so not sure if I care to deep about story content...just looking for fun...

The Witcher 3 - still playing after 2 weeks.

This 12 hours less then 1 week? And no replay value, no thanks :)

I think AK will have loads of replay value. I've got over 70 hours on Arkham Asylum and 125 hours on Arkham City to date (19 hours on Arkham origins...).

Yeah, I think PhysX had issues right? I'm wondering if the new dynamic Smoke stuff will cause a huge FPS chug. It always feels like these NEW features, always end up more trouble then they are worth. For ONCE I just want a game to launch, and have all its features run smoothly. Good thing they are just extra options though. As long as the base game run smooth, I'm okay.

... really unprofessional of Dan Stapleton to willingingly spill all the beans. ESPECIALLY in the compressed video review. Really? You couldn't have skirted around the spoilers? You can't review a game without completely divulging all the story elements, are you that terrible at your job that you've never thought about who's taking this review in? No spoiler warning either... absolutely embarrassing and infuriating.

I'm glad Colin and Greg jetted out of that company. Imagine if IGN (Colin reviewed it) spoiled the introduction scene to TLOU? (though we have no idea how big and impactful these spoilers are, I would say somewhat considering WB hasn't mentioned any of them)

Can't wait for midnight to roll around and IGN to plaster end game thumbnails all over the place. "You won't believe what Marvel character shows up in Arkham Knight" Ughh
