Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

You can get the released expansions for $35 (Destiny Expansion Pass - contains The Dark Below and House of Wolves).

If you want to buy the 2 existing expansions plus the Taken King all together, the cheapest option is to pre-order the legendary edition of Taken King at $60 which includes the base game plus all 3 expansions, and comes out in September.

Ah, that's kinda lame, I thought it was out now or soon... me trying to hock the vanilla game after'd be futile, and I'll be onto MGS by September.

Glad I got out of this game when I did.

That's all I keep thinking, especially with this talk of micro transactions. I can't help but think that the top brass at Bungie/Activision are less than satisfied with sales of the game and the retention rate, so they've decided to cannibalize the existing user base.

People think that Destiny was a great financial success because the game surpassed 10 million users, but how were the sales? And how did those sales compare to expactations? It was probably one of the most traded in games of all time (my own copy had at least two owners before it came my way) and those numbers also include multiple PSN/Live profiles playing on one disc.

What's the point of a season pass if you don't get all the add-on content for the game with it?

Because it only includes the content in the first "season". Hence the term "season pass."

Not saying I agree with it, it's dumb as hell. But this isn't the first instance of this happening nor will it be the last.

It's not dumb per se. They should have announced properly that Season 1 has now ended. Hurrah!

Season 2 of Destiny starts in September with Taken King, please buy Season Pass 2.0 this fall that includes all expansions of the upcoming year for 40$.

I may be going crazy, but wasn't the pre-order digital version exclusive to existing owners of Destiny + DLC I & II listed for £27.99 when TTK got announced? The one that's listed at £39.99 now?

There's a lot that could have been communicated in a better way. :/

It's was announced at E3 that it's over 20 million users. Whatever that means.

So, for clarity's sake:

The Taken King Stand Alone DLC (Digital) - $40 US Dollars
The Taken King - Legendary Edition (Physical) - $60 US Dollars
The Taken King - Collectors Edition (Digital AND Physical) - $80 US dollars

The Legendary Edition (Physical) comes with Destiny ($10), Year 01 Season Pass ($10) and The Taken King DLC ($40)

The DIGITAL Collector's Edition comes with the content of the Legendary Edition ($60 bucks) and, for 20 dollars more, you get 3 Shaders, 3 Emotes and 3 Exotic Items with XP bonuses?

Not counting the original game plus the year 1 season pass (which amount to $60 dollars), that's $2.22 dollars per "digital" extra. It's not that bad if those were broken off and put up for sale on the store (which I firmly believe they will eventually, just like they did with the "EXCLUSIVE" pre-order Klassic Skins for MK9). They're still F2P levels of price-gouge-y, but they're not terrible.

The real mindfuck here (IMO) is that the PHYSICAL version of the Collector's Edition comes with a lot more "bonus" material (books, posters, maps and whatever else it shows up on Destiny's Website), while the DIGITAL version of it costs the same, doesn't come with any of the physical items AND it doesn't appear that there's a digital Legendary Edition for people that can't be bothered with physical collectibles.

I believe that to be a much more important point to focus than "but I'm a original owner of Destiny and I don't want to re-buy things to get some stupid emotes", which you shouldn't do anyway.

Personally, I think this is totally Activision going "people pay zillions of dollars for bundle-exclusive WoW companions, let's do the same on consoles". And what else would you expect from a company that puts the first black ops with a 33% discount on Steam on the summer sale, with no base price drops ever?

I thought that too. I thought I was going mad but we can't both have imagined it.

Man, you used to be cool, Luke.

As a 1up super fan from the start, I can assure you he was always an asshole.

But he was a funny asshole, so people let it slide.

Unfortunately, Destiny/Bungie doesn't have enough good will to lets this shit fly.

Why they would decide to let him of all people be a mouth peice for the game, when they have and continue to face backlash for how they have monotized and delivered on Destiny is surprising.

Yeah it's free except all that money the players have to pay every month.

Yeah, a fair point. That's why everyone uses Guild Wars 2 as an example instead (a game that also has plenty of free content, and at launch had a ton of content).

So wait a minute, lets get this straight.

I should:

- Make a US account
- Give Bungie more money as a punishment for me being pissed at their pricing.
- Lose all progress and start over again.

There's only one winner there.

I can see where you're coming from, I've done it in the past, however if you've already been loyal and bought the game and its DLC then you're SOL.

I want to see the following question put to Bungie:

"Do you feel comfotable with the value of your DLC, as such that it merits a price tag of $63."

If they answer yes, well why not raise the price of the US DLC by $23? They'd make a small fortune!

It's all about value is what i keep seeing/hearing after all.

Pretty sure you wouldn't lose your progress. Haven't tested that though. And probably cheaper going forward to just buy the CE edition on the U.S. store now and go from there if you are going to keep playing destiny.

Really I just was posting the advice, in general, in case people didn't know. Not necessarily Destiny only.

Unless this DLC happens to be what ODST was to Halo 3 (a real expansion), It's hard to justify expending so much money. Once I level up / find decent gear to enter The Vault of Glass, I'm leaving.

Sigh. I hate that for all the great gameplay it has and how enjoyable it can be, it is like being punched in the gut was the other half of the experience.

I don't know about playing The Taken King. I still think Destiny is the one game on XBL to actually meet up and talk to people, but it has never really been good. I liked being able to carry people through CE, it felt like being a high-level/skilled character, but HoW has kinda sucked.

Day 0 I got the Party Crasher and NL Shadow 701x (the best non-elemental Primary by FAR) so all that was left was to reach LV34 (my whole squad did this week one) and get all the new goodies.

All the new Exotics were novelty, PoE armour looked trash (still have a full set though) and Skolas turned from "please have a good Sniper/Gjalla" to "this is like playing Sepik's Prime as a LV8 in the beta, proper damage sponge".

The nice thing is that progression was fun, but after 2 weeks of HoW, unless you were hunting Crucible weapons or for some reason you didn't already have the best elemental primaries (which don't come from ToO, they come from VoG/CE), then you were playing for no progression.

I didn't expect to DROWN in Etheric Light by week 2. Though it is nice that almost nothing of mine was obsolete.

HoW, baring armour, has just given me the said Crucible weapons, a couple of novelty and fun Hunter Exotics... and that's it. Which isn't entirely a bad thing though.

The Taken King will be more of the same we all know that. They won't let us make our 365 Legendary's into the new cap, no way. It was too easy to reach it. If they do, then it's £40 for what I don't trust will be any difficulty in achieving it anyway.

So I really don't know. I would love to play different games and really I have until September to *miss* Destiny. I don't know anyone who actually still needs anything in this game so no one plays it.

I feel like every fucking DLC is just me paying to keep my save file, so that when others play I can play with them. Not for whatever easier Raid we'll end up getting.

It's was announced at E3 that it's over 20 million users. Whatever that means.

Hmmm.

So I looked into this, because even with bargain bin prices, it seems a little strange that the number would jump so quickly.

As Gamespot put it:

It's unclear how Activision Blizzard is counting "registered players" (Destiny allows you to create multiple characters, after all)

But that still goes to show that the fan base is apparently growing. Now that I think of it, the communication we're getting from Bungie seems pretty more of a cocky/self-assured tone than defeatist one, so I suppose customers are getting gouged despite the success of the game.

I have no etheric light yet. How are you drowning in it??

Week 1 I went 9-0 thrice, did all PoE thrice (inc. Skolas) -- and I got lucky with getting the chest armour from Judgement's Chance... By week 2 I upgraded EVERY legendary weapon and armour I had left.

Week 3 I stopped switching to my other characters lol.

Week 1 was madness though. I did Skolas like 22 times. Took a LV32 through and we beat him first try. Had to explain go the girl the strat and we were off.

Now Skolas is even easier, think about that...
