Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

There's many examples of collectors edition digital content being available for sale. There's nothing wrong with them handling it this way and offering the content for sale especially since it's only cosmetic items.

Where did it ever happen? I don't remember an instance of collectors edition content being given away at the same time they are selling it to physical disc owners.

I'm referring to the valid complaints people have about Bungie asking them to re-purchase the full game and all the expansions just to get the extras being given away to new Destiny owners. Those complaints are real. His example of people whining about new gamers getting access to the same extras as day one owners is nonexistent, or worst case incredibly rare since it hasn't happened.

There were a few problems with the CE as it was initially announced. The first was the fact that the CE exclusive items were not for sale separately. The second was the implied price premium for them ($20). This was discussed / ranted about at great length before yesterday's post.

This move solves the first issue (which is good!) but not the second. So, people are still complaining about the second. They are selling nine cosmetic items for the same price of the House of Wolves. Think about that for a sec.

Pretty sure this is more on Activision's part, but unfortunately Bungie has no choice on the matter it seems.

Yup

They have the worst price/content ratio of any game right now... of course thats somewhat subjective either way lol

The issue of 1:1 pricing is the main issue and mostly glossed over.

Is $20 for cosmetics overpriced? Yep. You betcha. Should be cheaper. The way they introduced that pricepoint, through an apology, is what is rubbing people up even more than it ususally would.

As for the hardened defenders, and there are a few in this thread, honestly it's getting boring now. There are plenty of us who love the game but aren't blind to what it going on here.

Eating it up just because "I think it's valuable" or "It's my GOTY hurr - durr" adds nothing to the discussion and overall issues at hand. Destiny is my GOTY but i don't need to accept their shitty consumer practices just because i enjoy their game.

Bungie themselves have released expansions at pricepoints and when they release more expoansions it will be compared to what we already got. If they don't seem to match up then yes people will be pissed.

For the millionth time. $40 != £40.

This is my main problem right there! they can sell their virtual toys to the price they see fit, but having an Apology and then a couple of lines down trowing price tags defeat the purpose of the apology, to a point where this whole deal lokks like an elaborate scheme to bring up people attention and use it as a way to market the new DLC. ( i doubt it is tough)

Like I said you keep on mentioning games with minimal entry costs, or are straight up f2p, there's a reason why the cosemetics are so expensive because that's where the majority of the games revenue will be from not from an up front $60.

How is World of Warcraft's entry cost minimal? The base game was $40-$50 for years, expansions are $30, and you pay $15/month. The majority of revenue there is almost certainly coming from subs, not cosmetics. They've only recently reduced the base game to $10, as a means to stem their loss of subscribers.

Killer Instinct was a $20 fighting game with 8 characters. It's a $40 game if you want all the costumes and accessories. I don't see how that's really a business model reliant on cosmetics. I suspect the math on the Street Fighter games works similarly, but I haven't touched those in some time.

The complaint in general was about whether the cost of cosmetics was proportionate to the base cost -- and they seldom are. That said, these other examples don't necessarily make this practice acceptable.....but I more question why Destiny sparks such a volume of righteous outrage, when people just kinda shrug their shoulders at other games that do it. It may just be an issue of people being more familiar with other genres are more used to it.

Neogaf: 80 page thread bitching about $20 optional vanity pack for Destiny, 10 page thread with people clamoring to spend $100 on a preorder pillow featuring an anime girl with huge tits and 300 page thread with people bragging about spending $300 on a game that literally nobody in thread knows anything about.

Keep on living the dream.

It appears to be unconditional surrender. The goalpost moving in the TTK CE pricing "debate" has been interesting to watch.

What goalpost moving?

Fixing one issue doesn't mean that a new one doesn't come to fruitation.

They are selling 9 cosmetic items for the price of TDB or HoW.

Think about that. Does that make sense? Logically is that a fair deal?

What a fucking train wreck.

I tried to overlook the obscene behavior from Bungie & Activision because I liked Destiny, but this disgusting ''apology'' is the straw that broke the camels back.

I'm done with that fucking developer - between all the bullshit, empty hype, pouring millions into a game that basically has no story, anemic content and treating its customers with such contempt is just vomit inducing.

If anyone from Bungie, or in particular, Luke Smith is lurking in this thread, know that this is the last time you'll get away with trying to extort your fans.

TLDR: Go fuck yourself, Bungie.

You're right. That was wrong of me. Just can't believe people are still complaining after getting exactly what they asked for.

You can't? Game fans always look for that extra mile to take.

lol no it isn't.

Well, I've bought Destiny and the 2 DLC's, and as much as I wanted The Taken King, I'll just use that money to buy something from another developer that isn't trying at every opportunity to take money from their ever dwindling pool of fans.

Bungie have lost any of the good faith they built up with House of Wolves.

I'm not even sure I want to endorse their business practices any more. As a UK resident I think I've had enough.

Shady business practices indeed, it feels like they're taking advantage of hardcore Bungie fans willing to fund a project on good faith.

Reminds me of this Sony/Shenmue 3 stuff.

Let's look at the Champions Bundle from Halo 4 which was $10.

3 armors
2 maps
Many armor and weapon skins
Many stances

Bottom line: You dun goofed again Bungie.

I would preffer to pay the 20 dollars for the shaders before playing Halo 4 again. You might called it quality over quantity.

That would depend entirely on which maps, but I was making a point on the pricing of the included comsetics. $20 for less is just insanely stupid in comparison.

Yeah, but in your example it just seems like the cosmetics are an excuse to charge an exorbitant amount for 2 maps. There's an ocean of players that don't give 2 shits about cosmetics, and many of the ones that do aren't going to be interested in the ones that are handed out free with every map pack.

The map pack that was part of the Champions bundle was 6 dollars. The armor pack standalone was 3 dollars and the steel skin pack was another 3 dollars. Taking cosmetics alone is $6 for just Halo cosmetics compared with $20 for fewer cosmetics in Destiny.

However, we can also mention that pre-order bonuses for Halo 4 were not made available separately outside of a GOTY edition.

Charging for Armor was a bigger insult in Halo when in Halo 3 and Reach they were free.

Man.

I swear some people see the word 'Destiny' in a thread title and then instantaneously drop in to give their nonsensical 2 cents.

DestINY...DestIny......DESTINY......destiny

Really disappointing seeing this info then looking at all the pricing for Destiny DLC.

Your answer is misleading. Someone who only owns Destiny can't simply buy The Taken King 40 dollar expansion. The 40 dollar expansion is only being sold to owners of Destiny who also bought the first two expansions. Unless I'm reading their product descriptions poorly.

Oh, I'm totally wrong. I just looked it up and you need both expansions for that price. Thats ridiculous!

They really ought to just slash the PSN/XBL Store prices on all the content to reflect the changes:

Vanila Destiny - $10
Dark Below - $5
House of Wolves - $5

32 pages about a dlc is a lot, but it's too easy to take this out of context. If this dlc was just one fuck up from Bungie and Activision I don't think there would have been so many pages. This just seems - naturally - like the drop that makes the cup run over.

All this bullshit kinda makes me want to play Destiny. My dad has it and has said it was enjoyable but he also isn't a fan of the money stringing plan.

GAF majority shits on this game but I keep hearing that its pretty fun to play at times.

Pretty sure this is more on Activision's part, but unfortunately Bungie has no choice on the matter it seems.

If this is true, which I'm sure it is, it just makes Bungie look even dumber for leaving MS because they wanted more independence.

The grass isnt always greener...

The devil you know...

You get the idea.

Destiny is a fun game to play with friends. I'll never deny that. Also has the best mechanics of any FPS I've ever played. It's just not fun doing the same missions over and over and over. If they could fix that one detail I'd still be playing.

Honestly the skins and dumb dance moves is a red herring. The issue with the expansion was always the price and amount of content in relation to the game they released at launch.

Exactly. Refreshing to see people "get it".

You want to know why this game is not on the PC?

Because this pricing model would not fly for the content that is given. In an ecosystem that thrives on DD sales, gamers would laugh at the prices per content.

I am telling you all, this game is a testing bed for how far they can push DLC shenanigans on the playerbase. With all these PR outlaw style "fuck you" statements they portray, it looks like one big (profiting) social experiment at this point.

House of Wolves will not have a raid - 29 pages

People complaining about cosmetic gear - closing on on 75 pages, I think

Mountains and molehills.

Yeah, that really is a lot of pages about Destiny :)

But really, there is a big difference in reading others statement which you may agree upon, and then writting your own statement so your opion and voice becomes part of something bigger. That's why these pages grow so big.

I love Destiny, but the decisions by the developer and publisher in regards to player options have been incredibly poor and this worsens its reputation. It becomes a love-hate relationship.

It can actually be an absolute blast and has some best-in-class mechanics (man, jetpacks/hoverpacks in other games feel like absolute shit in comparison) and gameplay...but for me, the lack of content + shitty business practices + bad game design decisions (they fixed a lot of these recently) = selling the game. I had probably put a solid 120-ish hours into it.

I've actually been waiting since then to jump back in, but this has left me cold again. Mostly I'm disappointed by thinking what Destiny could have been. Still planning on picking it up later this year if there is a sale.

The way I see those stats is that nothing can really change if there's no raid planned.

Distribution of cosmetic stuff can and has, and it's just a more wide-range topic for discussion.

Activision and Bungie have all the bases covered for certain.

The progression and rewards system is a carefully crafted Skinner box.

The aggressive lack of content in combination with the add on content pricing really does make the paying user base look like boiling frogs.

There's a saying along the lines of "no one hates someone smoking more than an ex-smoker". This is exactly what's happening in the Destiny threads. It really is fascinating to watch.
