SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Do you guys think that Shenmue 3 is going to be in any way technically impressive?

The first two games, particularly the first, are always lauded as being ahead of their time in terms of graphics/scope. That kind of thing plays an important part of the way certain games feel.

I know it can't be the new Crysis but something about it's scale/scope/visual impression needs to have a "wow" factor in order to replicate the impact that the first games had, no?

No, and unless it was part of the defined budget, I hope not.

The "wow" factor for Shenmue for me is the intimacy of the world, and how it really makes me immerse myself into Ryo Hazuki in Yokosuka, Hong Kong & Guilin respectively.

Shenmue is no longer that "Dreamcast System Seller" that it was made to be. For all intents and purpose, it's just another beloved, somewhat niche Japanese IP.

Shenmue fans are really something else. I'm proud of you all.
I knew this game was special from the moment I played this game in 2000 on my beloved Dreamcast.
That feeling you get while playing Shenmue is (after 15 years!) still unsurpassed by any game.

You didn't play as Ryo Hazuki, YOU WERE Ryo Hazuki and the world was full of life. Unlike some open world games with braindead NPC's moonwalking all over the place.

I feel sorry for everyone who didn't own a Dreamcast with Shenmue back then.

Shenmue for live!!

HELL YEAH!

Even if every single person who bought an Xbone in Japan last month played $100 it would add less than $20k to a value of $5.5+ million.

How many Shenmue fans that don't have a PS4 won't buy one for it or don't have a PC that will likely run it?

Here's one. I'd double dip for the Xbone since I've got one of those.

Shenmue 2 did sell a few copies on Xbox.

Well said. Shenmue brethren for life!

Damn, can't keep up with all these new people pledging towards a sequel to a game they never played. Really awesome!

Some just feel like it's an obligation to contribute (I did). I never got to play the originals because back in our province, no one bought and owned a Dreamcast. Reading about the game online though, I was always curious and I realized later on just how much of an impact it had in the industry.

I can always buy the game when it comes out, but meh, the game would be finished by then and I wouldn't have contributed to development.

Makes me sick to think how much more this would have got it they announced Xbox One support.

It would have given the campaign a bit of a boost for sure, but it also would have increased development costs. I think people forget this when they ask for additional platforms.

Personally, and maybe I'm being selfish because I already have a PS4, I think they're better off focusing on the one console and PC for now. They can always port it later on.

This is awesome! Leave for a couple hours and this motherfucker isn't slowing down! I'm at my limit right now. Got $600 on one account. $80 on another for PS4. $80 on another for PC! And finally $29 on a digital. $789...Totally worth it!

Loving this.
Why did this KS never enabled add-ons is beyond me. Another thing you can add to the "imagine how much more money this could've get if they did this" list. That and PayPal is inconceivable.

As someone who played Shenmue for the first time after there were already more impressive games graphically I kinda disagree. Maybe it was one factor, but other things were far more ahead of it's time.

Add-ons are a nightmare to support, because they aren't officially supported by Kickstarter - they have to be dealt with manually by the company running the Kickstarter, and imagine having to do that with 60,000 orders.

I wish they had addons too. Though I see a lot of people made multiple accounts to get the different versions. I guess the bright side of that is we get more backers at least, hahaha.

We have SMASHED through Kicktraqs silly high projection from last night btw.
NOTHING STOPS THIS TRAIN!

That's why third party solutions like backerkit exist:
https://www.backerkit.com/

I wonder if they plan to use something like this.

Yeah, this is the only reason I can think of for why they didn't do it. Still surprising they just didn't do a physical + digital tier to counter that though.

The passport player (head) models blew my mind though. Wasn't the dreamcast sort of capable of rendering them too in game through some hack?

If Bloodstained and its 65,000 backers could do it, Shenmue could too.

Again, this is just Bloodstained spoiling us after we saw what an excellently run campaign that was when compared to any other.

It can but if it did then you want watch though fps majestically drop in speed due to high polygon count. Also, the graphics would be too inconsistent from the rest of the game too and consistency is the most utmost importance as oppose from one character looking too good..

Kickstarter keeps climbing!

...NASA Pluto Press conference starting now.

So much going on!

...and I have work that needs to get done.

aaaaaaah *runs in circles*

$6M was my pinnacle that I thought would be amazing to reach but maybe won't quite make it, but it's seeming more and more likely. What an achievement if it can be done!

Unless there's a massive surge I can't see 6.5 million happening. Maybe when the stream starts we'll see a deluge of pledges in the final few hours.

It's done. Shenmue III will happen.

I put in $100 without even peeking at the video this morning, on pure faith alone.

On viewing the video that was such a nostalgia trip with Shenhua/Ryo, that Ryo jumping over the creek was a QTE opportunity truly missed, but the test footage looked fantastic, the characters are just as I remembered them 13 years ago (EU Dreamcast)

Yu Suzuki mentioned that he heard of Kickstarter 3 years ago so it probably took him that time to get the ducks lined up (especially Sega for the IP)

Thanks so much Schafer, DoubleFine, and even to Fargo et al for starting the Kickstarter mania that, despite many highs and lows, have led to this point. THIS POINT.

From the DF Adventure kickstarter thread 3 and a bit years ago:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=34975987&postcount=913

Now that it's funded, I can worry about other things, like the development team involved (need more resources for an ambitious game), lack of robustness in the Kickstarter itself (seems a bit sparse on what's being offered), and obviously, scope.

The video didn't look like it'll finish the saga, so as a backer I'll say - Please Yu, finish it.

We Should take a moment to recognize that without doublefine we almost certainly wouldn't be here today. They were the first big name kickstarter and doublefine adventure resulted in a sea change in terms of what we could expect from crowd funding.

As one of the DFA backers, I felt really emotional to not only see the concluding episode of the way-too-good documentary (This blog post is fantastic background), but seeing the fine lads running the updates finishing with a shoutout to Shenmue 3 was wonderful. As one door closes, another opens and I'm eternally grateful to the crowdfunding movement (for better or worse) to bring Shenmue 3 to life *cry*

For as many partings there are, There are just as many meetings

(Only slightly disappointed about not finishing the saga - Go for 4 *wink*) Also, AJ, I see you kek

I have not played any Shenmue games to be honest. Was never a Sega kid.

Just decided to back this at $60 on a whim. Hoping for the best.

Worst-case scenario, I'll have a rare physical copy of the PS4 version.

So I'm in for both physicals now. Maybe I'll keep one sealed. But then I can't see myself ever selling either of them. I wonder how much benefit there is to doing this.

I hope the stream ends up being half as good as the DFA end stream!
The happiness in that was palpable.
