Star Wars KOTOR 2 Gets Big Update + out on Mac & Linux

Been playing this all day, loving it. I steered clear of playing this back when it came out because I'd heard the last third of the game just takes a nosedive in quality, but I've heard the restored content remedies that so it's nice to finally play the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time.

Quick question tho: I'm playing with a 360 pad - is there an easier way to switch party members on the fly? Right now I'm having to use the quick menu with Y and switch from there, which can get really annoying sometimes - especially mid-battle.

How do you get controller support working? I don't see it in the options anywhere? Using a wiiU pro with adapter but I guess thats not supported.

I'm glad to see so many people playing the restored content <3 but I think..

I honestly think a lot of you should give SWTOR a try. It gets a lot of shit from a lot of people who are angry at it not being the new coming of jesus, but you know what - Some of the class stories lives up to it. I recommend giving Sith Warrior, Inquisitor, Agent and Jedi Knight a spin.

It answers a lot of questions left unanswered in the end of KOTOR2. It's very interesting how in the hundreds of years following the state of galaxy is in. Particularly with planets like Taris. Since its a F2P game one can go in with a different set of expectations.

The game is getting a massive expansion this fall which will "streamline the lvl 1-60 experience" so you might want to wait for that. There is a whole new story taking place, the jedi and sith empires simultanious being brought to their knees by a third faction who has stayed in the shadow in the outer rim. This faction has some teras kasi "highly force sensitive" thing going on, and as a result, the player character will go into cryosleep for 10 years, and upon waking up the sith empire and jedi order is basically.. fragments.

i loved the bounty hunter story line... too bad it isnt out on MAC or i wouldve gane the game another try now that its F2P

I love KOTOR 2 so much.

A very different game to the original but, in my view, the better of the two. I've heard it said that KOTOR 2 is The Empire Strikes Back to KOTOR 1's A New Hope, but I don't think the analogy fully does it justice. It would be more accurate to say that KOTOR 2 is like nothing else within the Star Wars universe.

I'm not sure that I can agree that the game is overwritten either. I actually found the denseness extremely immersive. Kreia is without doubt the best written character in any videogame I've ever played.

X button switches party members.

L stick click is flourish.

So I'm really unlearned when it comes to mods...

Do I just download this? Do I have to install the game first through Steam? Is downloading all that's necessary or do I have to tweak files somehow? If so are there instructions?

NVM I'm an idiot. Instructions are on the same page.

Ah you're awesome! Thanks. Doing this now. Waiting for the main game to install.

I'm having an ungodly hard time deciding on what class and affiliation I want to play as.

I normally like going for all sorts of powers, so a Consular might do me well leading into Sith Lord, but a Guardian might be great for Light Side.

Someone help me pick :o

Question
I own this and KOTOR 1 on steam (humble bundle).
Played the first on console, never finished but I know how the plot goes.
Bearing in mind that I have a substantial backlog, should I just go straight to 2 now?

Fucking (location spoiler)
Czerka Compound
. Squads of mercenaries + a fucking ramp + turrets. My party, after defeating one squad of mercenaries, decides the better thing to do is RUN STRAIGHT AT THE TURRETS + there's another mercenary squad near there. I can't stop them. Fucking AI.

Ha. Yeah, that +
Atton's bar fight
are the two most hilariously broken fights in the game.

Does this mean if I bought the physical copy I can get the update to finish the game content or do I need to buy it off steam again?

Edit - Or does the restored content mod work without steam? I bought that double pack a few years ago and it doesn't use steam in any way I believe.

Otherwise known as the
"finally, a place where I can use all these damn mines"
fight.

Also, hot tip for people doing the dueling ring quests:
Just walk into your opponent until they back out of the ring; they forfeit (since they broke the rules of the duel) and you win by default. Pretty cool that Obsidian coded this as such, even as exploited as it is.

If you're familiar with the game well enough go consular. Mage classes always own in Bioware games.

What the shit. That's great

Restored content mod works with physical, but you don't get the update which has the native widescreen and controller support. That update is Steam only currently.

The executable. Go to where the game's installed.

Sorry for being so dumb, but I have no idea how to do this. I'm on Windows 8.1. So I opened my file explorer, went into Computer, then Program Files x86, and couldn't find the game. It's not under "Steam/steam/games" or in its own folder. How do I find this out?

All games are always installed under Steam/Steamapps/common then open the KOTOR II folder.

SWKotor2.exe is the one you are looking for.

Check ...\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Knights of the Old Republic II

Edit: Beaten.

Right click the exe, go to properties, compatibility, and disable the DPI scaling option and see if that fixes it

Hey i figured this out and now 4k is working. Thank you! Now, do you know why the IQ of the cutscenes is terrible? Super blurry and way worse than in-game.

The biggest problem with the droid planet is that, unlike the HK factory, the game is perfectly complete without it. The puzzles on that planet, all the plot points, etc. were moved to other planets and the game is very intact without it. It's a nice little diversion for die hard fans of the game, but it is truly cut content that was meant to be cut, as opposed to "holy shit we have to release this game in two weeks" cut content.
Once I install it do I need to complete that planet or is it optional? Cause I tried that planet for 20 minutes, I can't stand it.

Once installed, it is interwoven into the story in some capacity
Is the HK factory part of the restored content mod or do i separately subscribe to HK factory mod?
The HK factory and the droid planet are two separate modules. The HK factory is restored with TSLRCM, whereas M4-78 is optional content that makes a few minor changes to the story in terms of pacing

M4-78 is restored by a separate team and had to recreate dialog and such. It is also overly long and tedious.

It's a fair claim that you can skip it as thing featured in it were either scrapped for good reason, or relocated to different parts of the game

They were rendered at 640x480...nothing doing about that unless they re-rendered them from scratch, i think.

So this playthrough I'm boned and have to complete? And I can't just uninstall and have it the save work because it is interwoven, ugh

Edit: also, why does hk 47 not help me fight the hk 50s?

You'll just have to power through it. Luckily once the first part of the level is done, you gain access to fast travel points in the level

I just made the handmaiden into a dark jedi :(
Going to have to restart now, my brain being fried isn't worth it.
