Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

I live for danger. Danger, and Smash speculation.

What would Nintendo have to gain from such a deal? Shovel Knight isn't an exclusive anymore.

I mean we're entertaining the idea that Nintendo would make Shovel Knight a DLC character for Smash Bros despite being an indie multiplatform character with 1 game under his belt. Unless the reason he's in (assuming this is true) is that "he did very well on the ballot and Sakurai liked the character design" (which is technically all anyone needs*) it's safe to speculate that there might be more going on behind SK's inclusion.

Fuck this just give me my Golden Sun character already.
Shantae is the only acceptable indie I'll accept for now.

To be honest, the spoilered one is the one that makes the most sense.

That said, I'd be down for either but they both seem highly implausible.

Two years, you mean. FEA came out in Japan back in May 2012. The game was pretty old news by the time Smash 4 came out in late 2014.

Fair enough, but development began not too long after KIU's release, so the use of Robin and Lucina served more as a general advertisement for the series - and if they didn't use them, they couldn't use anyone newer since Fates' release was years later (and not even announced until well after Smash released).

Well for me and seemingly many others who have their top pick/vote as K. Rool, the reason(s) I want to see him in Smash are for one, his design, while ugly, is oddly charming and endearing in itself. Two, his personas across DCK 1-3 and 64 lend well to him having a rather schizophrenic and wacky presence and varied moveset. Finally, three, he was in a great trilogy of games and was an enjoyable boss character to overcome, if tough.

I'm a bit different in picking him as my choice because while I had a SNES as a kid, I never played the DKC games, and discovered the trilogy on the Wii, and fell in love with them and happened to really enjoy the Kremlings/K. Rool's presence. It's fine to disagree though, I'm not going to go off on anybody like some of the more, uh, passionate fans.

Well the argument is K Rool is the Bowser of the DK series. Of course one can twist this and point out the DK series is part of the Mario series ergo Bowser is the Bowser of the DK series, or even Mario is the Bowser to the DK in his series.

Other popular bad guys I've seen mentioned over the years (since the forerunners constantly change as the years go by and some part of me does see Shovel Knight as a bit of a Geno in this regard) Captain Syrup for Wario and Ridley (lol) for Samus. Syrup would be argued as too obscure and Wario Land hardly gets any representation in Smash and well Ridley is Ridley, so that leaves K Rool as the choice missing bad guy.

Oh come now, there's numerous valid reasons why people think K. Rool deserves to be in.

1. DK rep (four games and only two reps for one of the biggest video game series ever?)
2. Villain
3. People want Trouble King 3
4. People have wanted him for a really long time, and his popularity has been pretty decent at worst TBH
5. Villain of a series considered a classic to many

Really, the only good reason against K. Rool is a personal one of "I don't like him". Moveset potential ain't a thing (and in K. Rool's case not even reasonably a problem), relevancy is only somewhat valuable (in that it may influence Sakurai's decisions), etc.

Fair points. I'm a massive DKC fan but I find K. Rool one of the least appealing characters in that franchise. I'd much rather have Dixie in Smash (or even Cranky).

Yes. My DKC character rep wishlist is:

1) Dixie
2) Cranky
3) The Stop-and-Go Rock Crocodiles
4) Another Donkey Kong
5) The final boss from Tropical Freeze

My desire for K. Rool is ultimately pragmatism. I don't think that characters should be added just to appease a fanbase, but there should be some of that to an extent. I like him all right, he's far from my first choice (I'd choose Dixie, Cranky, and Donkey Kong Jr. sooner than K. Rool), but I think he should be in.

But seriously, I actually really want Donkey Kong Junior to be playable. I'd be so hype. I love weird additions like that.

So in how many pages will the discussion go from K Rool to Ridley?

Ridley would be a pretty good choice in terms of his role in Metroid, but he is admittedly somewhat unwieldy. I think they could shrink him down, and it could work, but I can understand why Sakurai is kind of put off by the idea of doing that. He obviously has a vision of Ridley as this giant, hulking beast - to him, he may as well shrink down Kraid while he's at it.

I can't wait for Sakurai to say that Ridley isn't in Smash 5 because he did shitty on the ballot this time around

I mean, this may be neither here nor there, but

I don't think Sakurai will be directing Smash 5. I think he will be involved, but I think he's probably out now and will be going into consulting.

Which I think is for the best. He doesn't want to do it I'm sure, and we don't want the series to be limited by only ever being directed by a single person. TBH, I think Smash 5 should be directed by multiple people. As good of a director as Sakurai has typically been with the Smash series, I think his perspective was too powerful in terms of character choices.

Oh crap am I late?

Nope, you're good.

Were these avatars coincidental, or are you two like creepy twins who like to get people confused?

Honestly I'd like if even when not directing, Sakurai could still choose the characters and give them their general moveset. I think he does a good job at that. Smash 4 shows that, inspite of his balance quirks, the guy can come up with some really unorthodox and out-of-the-box character designs. Bowser Jr, for example, might not be the greatest competitive wise, but he still has a really fun and unique design. Most people would of just given him the paint brush and that's it. Sakurai's the only kind of guy that can think of having Jr. fight in his Koopa Clown Cart all day.

Droid, Mariolee, & I are the Chris Pratt Army (formed back during the GotG Hype Train's route). We all just so happened to have Chris Pratt avatars made for us by Quick, so we went with it.

On-topic, while it was said that Shovel Knight would be revealed in the next 2 months, now would be the best time to show him off (if he's actually in the game).

As cool as this is (I fuckin love Shovel Knight), I'd feel bad if Shantae didn't get in too because she's a bit more relevant compared to Shovel Knight.

Then again, Sakurai did say it's all "fanservice" from here on.

I'd be all over SK, finally a weapon user not holding a sword.

Bowser Jr, Zero Suit Samus, Palutena, and King Dedede.

Also maybe the Pits but I'm not completely sure what the weapons they use are. Some kind of bow which splits up into dual blades?

Ice Climbers were weapon holders, too. Also, 1/3 of Duck Hunt uses a gun (NES zapper) to attack :P

Don't really look at those guys as weapon fighters. Samus is hand to hand with a whip and rocket boots for good measure, Dedede I give you, Palutena I guess can count, bowser jr is kind of iffy for me.

Pit has a bow (for pretty much one attack) that splits into dual swords (for a lot of his attacks).

Jr. is definitely weapons-based - almost all of his moves are related to weapons. He's basically in a tank.

If this is true along with the layton seems everyone is getting invited. Except for the original third party character that started it all.

Sakurai won't direct Smash 5 because he has tendonitis and it keeps getting worse each year. I imagine he'd be in a supervisor role at best.

And Iwata won't be there to force him to do it anyway :p

GameXplain discussion

It's starting to seem like every time those guys make a video on a Smash leak it's revealed to be fake moments later. I give this rumour about 10 more minutes

What about the Layton one?

In the chance if Solid Snake does return to the series, it makes me wonder which incarnation of the character it would be. Metal Gear (NES), Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (Game Boy Color), Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GameCube), & Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater were the games that have appeared on Nintendo consoles.

Probably the one in Brawl

I think people already gave up on Ridley now.

Snake.... had a hard life....

I thought Sakurai's situation have been improved and feel better about DLC development. I don't remember where I read that but he was more excited about DLC Development because it's more lighter, right?

Didn't the design for Brawl Snake borrow elements from Snake Eater as well?

Yes, although he's considered Solid Snake, he has elements of Big Boss in him as well. He's a mix of MGS2 and 3 Snake.

I imagine he'd just outright be Big Boss if he returned, eyepatch and scruffy beard, because that's what Konami and Kojima appear to want use as "Snake" since Brawl came out.

Either that or Smash 4 would go full retro and have him look just like MGS1. That would be kind of cool.

He made food noises like in MGS3. But the design was MGS2 snake all the way.

His facial hair is 3. Sakurai (iirc) even said he's designed to incorporate both 2 and 3 in his design. But he's Solid Snake 100% in all materials, so the aspects borrowed from 3 are not meant to change which Snake was in Brawl.

It'd be even better if there were multiple costumes for Snake. Alas, the roster will be amazing in the end, but imperfect without him.:P

If true, I'm happy for those that wanted to see him "dig his way into the battle."

Personally though, I'd rather see iconic third-party characters like Simon Belmont, Snake, Kunio or one of the Double Dragons make it in. Them or more obscure first-party ones like Takamaru, an Eggplant wizard from Kid Icarus, or Stanley from DK3; or even an indie character like Shantae who's been around for longer.

While I liked Shovel Knight, I also found it to be a somewhat forgettable experience (outside of the music) that didn't really stick with me after beating it once. As such I remain surprised at how highly praised it continues to be everywhere as THE indy game or retro action-platformer to compete with. I also think Shovel Knight's character design could use some tweaks to be honest. The cliche viking horns are a bit much for me for instance, and they don't seem to fit his otherwise quite traditional knight armor.

But oh well, to each their own as always, and as said, I am happy if he gets in for those that are bigger fans of him.
