Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

I'll go back to my theory regarding a character for each of the major regions Nintendo works in.

North America - Shovel Knight
Europe - Professor Layton
Japan - Hatsune Miku

I'm ok with this.

Makes more sense for 3rd parties to be DLC more anywayz since it helps with licsensing costs instead of each third party taking a cut out've the main game. (Or I assume thats how it goes.)

I could see these three in the top 10 and Sakurai going with them honesly.

There's also the possibility that Nintendo has a deal for an exclusive game from Yacht Club Games, or even a timed exclusive for a Shovel Knight sequel.

Yacht Club is really small, IIRC, and they're still hard at work on Shovel Knight updates. I doubt they could work on a new game alongside it.

They have confirmed Shovel Knight content exclusive to Nintendo systems, though. What it is, nobody really knows.

True.

Perhaps Nintendo bought Yacht Club Games and staffed it? :V

No way I see this happening. It's three times the amount of work for the same number of character sales.

If they release any character, it will be worldwide. Shovel Knight may not be well-known in Japan and Hatsune Miku might not be well-known in America, but a few sales is still better than no sales, and people will play as Smash Bros characters they've never heard of before (See: Marth in Melee).

Although to my understanding, Hatsune Miku is ineligible due to not originating in a video game, unless Vocaloid counts as a game (I don't have much experience with it).

I'm not saying they'll only release the characters in each region, I'm saying that they will release a character that appeals to each of the regions. It's a strawman, nonetheless.

Professor Layton makes a lot of sense though, yeah. His games sell well in every region and he has books and movies to boot. It also wouldn't be his first ever crossover.

Good thing they have Haruka Amami as a backup then.

And no, Vocaloid isn't a game. It's like calling a keyboard a game. It's an instrument. However Miku does have games.

No Miku. I don't want her in another game where she can brutally slaughter an amazing song from said series.

I hope Shovel Knight makes the cut. He could have a pretty unique moveset, and it would be great for YachtClub.

Well since she'd be a Sonic rep she can cover Sonic music. I mean Seven Rings in Hand is so bad it can only be improved.

I just mentioned Miku because she's a Sega character, so it would be relatively easy to get her rights. In reality, I'm expecting Jibanyan so they can play the Pokémon vs Yokai Watch rivalry.

I would totally be okay and happy with miku.....which makes me feel weird/bad that im not on board with Shovel Knight, especially considering that Mikus origin is not from a video game. Then again im on edge with shovel because ive yet to play the game, im sure my mind would change if I did.

There is no character I want more than Miku.

even ignoring that SK is an odd character that doesn't fit with the other third parties, there a few other weird parts of this leak.

Why is the Shovel Knight Amiibo coming out so far ahead of all the other DLC Amiibo?

Why didn't these shops have listings for Roy, Lucas and Ryu? Or even other DLC beyond even Shovel Knight?

This is kind of weird. Ryu, Roy and Lucas' Amiibos haven't even been formerly shown off yet, and Shovel Knight already has a listing for stores?
This is what I've been thinking too and I'm gonna guess and say Shovel Knight is getting a standalone amiibo, to be released this holiday or whatever. Compatible with the Nintendo versions of the game, that will unlock Nintendo exclusive content.

I know that Spanish retailer listed it as Smash series but AFAIK the other retailers NL is in contact with have only reconfirmed he's getting an amiibo. They didn't explicitly state if it was in the Smash Bros series or not.

If we're doing "characters that aren't actually game characters but are licensed by a company already in Smash" then Goku would be #1. The game license is owned by Namco, and he'd be way more popular than Miku. And would actually have a reason to exist because DB has a long history of games on Nintendo systems.

I could list a half dozen reasons why miku shouldn't be in smash, but I'm sure you guys would have counterpoints to each one, so I won't even bother :p

To me, it's the equivalent of wanting harry potter in the game. Yeah, there have been harry potter video games... but... harry potter is not FROM a video game. Oh well. I won't try to crush anyone's dreams. Smash should be fun for everyone. May all your dreams come true
(unless those dreams are to have ubisoft characters in the game).

Edit: Actually yeah, goku is a better analogy than harry potter.

Seriously. Do people not realize the popularity of Miku in Japan or something? lol. I don't really care (outside of another female rep) but writing her off just because she didn't start in a game, but now has several is iffy at best.

Besides characters that are totally off the wall and have no revelence to Nintendo, my only remaining wants are Shovel Knight, Pheonix Wright, and Inklings. And if SK gets in that two out've three since I know Inklings will get in eventually. :P

Just because she's popular in japan doesn't mean she belongs in smash. One piece is popular. The avengers are popular. Jurassic park is popular. A million things are super popular. That does not mean they belong in a fighting game starring characters that originated in video games.

ok ok, i'm done. :)

Why wouldn't they be serious?

fuck

we are getting Knuckles or Shadow, aren't we?

fuck

Nah, we have the iDOLM@STER to represent Namco to save us.

Oh and for all the originated in a videogame or not talk, do you lot forget this series has Pokémon!? That's a videogame series based off of an anime!

It is pretty suspicious that the Yacht Club Games twitter account usually responds to Smash questions by urging people to vote for Shovel Knight, but today they have been awfully quiet about the issue.

Actually I think Luffy is probably more popular, even if you consider that Dragonball is much more popular in the west

Hopefully this isn't true. It would really cheapen the roster if a character from one recent multiplat indie game (that only had exclusive content on non-Nintendo systems, no less) got in over the multitude of other deserving choices.

My honest thoughts about the character inclusion if true is that while cool, the spot should have really gone to a deserving Nintendo character; K. Rool (no, some of you guys won't get me down despite mocking him!) or an iconic/well known third-party character like Rayman/Snake. But whatever, it'll be fun!

Probably so. I don't care about Dragon Ball so I don't know how popular it is, tho I think I've heard its the most popular anime ever so thats quote the feat. :P

Alot of factors Too. For example i could see a case of both Miku and Shovel Knight being in the top 10 but not Goku because Goku's fanbase could just be very loud and M/SK could not since they don't actually expect the character, so they never really post about them for support even tho they voted for them. We would never know unless Nintendo actually tells us the results.

Here are some characters that I think could possibly be top 10 even tho for some of these you rarely here them mentioned:

1: Goku
2: Shovel Knight
3: Shantae
4: Shrek
5: Spongebob
6: Freddy (Five Nights at Freddy's)
7: MineCrafter
8: Cloud (Final Fantasy 7)
9: Yu (Persona 4)
10: Miku

I could see soem of these being in the top 10.
Hardcore fanbase: Yu, Shovel Knight, Shantae
Mainstream: Could, Shrek, Goku, Spongebob, Minecraft
Dedicated fanbase: FNAF, Miku
Not daying any of these characters will get in, but think they are getting alot more votes than people expect. Really anything goes. :O

I think the final top 10 will be a mix of veterans, first party, and the above mentioned.

I wish they'd tell us the results but I know they won't outside of maybe who actually gets in. :(

Anything goes, but I just don't see a second Sega rep.

Honestly I kinda think Shovel Knight is just as deserving than Rayman. Both characters have moves and designs that would translate well to Smash, but putting in SK would be a very powerful message to indie developers. Rayman's been around for longer, sure, but other than that, what makes him more deserving? He debuted on the PS1 and his most recent game's famous for not being a Wii U exclusive, so there isn't really a meaningful Nintendo tie.

knock knock

Considering there's the potential to pick a character that only got six votes I doubt they'll release the result in case of backlash. It would just result in a lot of people asking why the winner didn't become a fighter.

Iconic nintendo what? Shovel Knight is the main character of one of the best 2D games ever made and definitely the best Megaman since X. He deserves that place.

Nah man, the next slot should go to....K. Rool.

For some reason.

I guess I can kind of understand people thinking certain characters are more deserving of a spot in Smash than Shovel Knight (I respectfully disagree) but anyone saying it should K. Rool aren't making their case very well. That pick would be only slight less WTF than Geno or Goku.

Dark Pit and Lucina already cheapened the roster, if anything Shovel Knight would improve it. So what if he is an indie character? Still a great character from a great game (unlike Lucina :p) and being playable in Smash would only help strengthening the Shovel Knight IP.
