Rumor (with a side of salt): Shovel Knight coming to Smash Wii U/3DS?

Giving indies amiibos is smart. It incentivizes them to put their games on the Wii U, which has a small install base, an even smaller number of game-buying consumers, a smaller fraction of which will buy digitally, a smaller fraction of which will buy indie, etc.

They should honestly be approaching every big kickstarter and successful indie publisher and offering to make amiibos. Not just Shovel Knight, but Yooka-Laylee, Bloodstained, Mighty No. 9, Steamworld Dig, etc., in exchange for timed exclusivity.

Gavin Price has said he wants a Yooka-Laylee Amiibo to exist. I'm hopeful in them getting that now.

Just because it isn't a Smash box art Amiibo doesn't mean it's not for Smash. Maybe it's coming before its compatible with Smash. You never know.

If SK were already far along in development for Smash, as the rumor says, then theres no reason he'd get a generic Amiibo first, and then have another Amiibo on the way. Also this amiibo has the "Official Licensed Nintendo Product" meaning YCG pushed this amiibo out, not Nintendo.

Come on, we all know you want it to be fake just so K. Rool's chances increase :P

Yes and no. Shovel Knight was never a threat to K. Rool. The character literally doesn't exist in Japan, and K. Rool is the most popular first party newcomer over there. Then he posted this:

It negates a lot because Tamaki says SK is in development "Now" and hes ready to be revealed soon. If SK were in development, it doesn't make sense to release a SK amiibo if hes going to end up getting a Smash one soon. Especially since hes Indie.

If he gets added as DLC now, his Smash Amiibo probably won't be out until late Winter 2016. Ryu, Lucas and Roy are even pushed out to 2016 and they came out two months ago.

Plenty of time between the two Amiibo types.

man remember Spainkiller

Hey, he just said his source saw moving models for those characters. The whole "Extrapolating that they're console exclusives" wasn't cool, but we know 3/4 of his characters have moving models, with Dixie being a mystery at the moment.

Again, though, he could've left it at that instead of adding his own speculation... I got really excited about there possibly being 4 more characters in the base roster! Oh well. I hope he didn't get banned, at least.

I'm calling it. The big reveal at Nindies@Night is a Nindie amiibo line.

First wave is Shovel Knight, Shantae, Commander Video, Quote and Scram Kitty.

If there were more, I'd wonder why Shovel Knight is the only one that's getting leaked.

I kinda doubt that since this amiibo isnt part of a "line." It has YCGs logo on it and instead of Nintendos usual logo, they put their "Seal of approval" on it which would mean YCG is trying to maintain the profits for it. The others a possible down the road, but I don't see this amiibo as part of an indie series.

The evidence is information from retailer insiders...

I'm calling it now:

There will be a Shovel Knight Amiibo, but it will be to coincide with the physical release of the game or unlocks something in the game. Like the Chibi Robo Amiibo in Zip Lash.

And Smash Bros. compatability is that it unlocks a Trophy or Assist Trophy when scanned.

Called it.

I'd be all over Shovel Knight and Shantae. Actually, would be nice to see both in Smash.

My point is if Shovel Knight is so obscure why is he getting an Amiibo? Stranger things have happened.
Yacht Club Games probably wanted to make a Shovel Knight Amiibo and Nintendo gave them the okay. Nothing more. Chibi-Robo is getting an Amiibo soon, and I'm sure we'll see even more obscure characters being produced moving forward. Amiibo is still a fairly new concept.

Yeah this definitely seems like Y.C.G. was probably one of the first developers to inquire about making their own Amiibo and Nintendo worked with them.

Lets hope they're not the last.

I would be right there day 1 for A Yooka-Laylee amiibo.

Heck, I'm tempted to get this and I don't even have shovel knight just to support the idea.

Maybe Nintendo wanted to put out YC's own Amiibo before the Smash Amiibo so the Smash Amiibo didn't cannibalize the sales of the one YC will make the most money off of?

Or Unseen64 is wrong and SK is not coming to Smash at all and this Amiibo is just because YCG wanted it

That was close, good to see this amiibo isn't for Smash.

Sorry, Shovel Knight supporters, I think a lot more characters need in first.

I think the idea of Nintendo trying to sell two different amiibo of the same relatively low-key character is very silly.

I still need ShockingAlberto to explain that one to me.

He's implying that you're being a hypocrite for criticizing Shovel Knight being a blip on the radar when you're visibly advocating for a Nintendo character who in the current gaming sphere is even less of a blip.

Nintendo isn't the one selling this amiibo though.

The Chorus Kids are also a blip on the radar. I'm not denying that. I'd like for the Chorus Kids (or anyone else from Rhythm Heaven) to be playable, but I don't think it's going to happen. How is that hypocritical? I can want a character to be in the game without deluding myself into thinking they are more important than they actually are. Those are two separate things.

Also, there are plenty of minor Nintendo characters in Smash Bros. The Chorus Kids would fit in just fine. Third-party characters are incredibly rare and incredibly special -- that's why I'm holding them to a higher standard, one that Shovel Knight doesn't come close to reaching.

If the next line of focus for Mii outfits are indies, it should include Shovel Knight swordfighter, Quote from Cave Story Gunner, Guacamelee brawler, MN9 Beck Gunner (hahaha), and some others to name a few.

Phil Fish mii will have fun with these guys

Rhythm Heaven is way more popular than Shovel Knight though, at least worldwide. If we count only the west, then things are different. Anyways, what I got from ShockingAlberto's post was that he was making fun of Ryce because they are complaining about Shovel Knight while having an avatar of a Smash 4 scrapped character.

I love Shovel Knight, I'm really looking forward to an Amiibo of him! :D

Next give me an Isaac (from Binding Of Isaac) Amiibo please, that would be so cool! :D

Backpedaling into OVERDRIVVVVVVVVEEEEEE

He could have saved some of his credibility by saying "my retailer sources got confused and assumed this was for Smash. I apologize" and smooth it out. He'd still be wrong, but not as wrong as he's going to be if this doesn't pan out.

Instead of doubling down.

It's understandable a retailer might get confused as to the purpose of an Amiibo. We'd understand that. But he keeps going that this is the real deal and SK in Smash is still happening...

It was a game development source that told him Shovel Knight was in Smash. None of the retail sources specified that this amiibo was for Smash.

tbf Shovel Knight in Smash could still happen if the ballot push for him is outstandingly huge.

I'm not holding out hope though.

The Smashboard Mods reached out to Tamaki and is saying his source is the real deal though (70-80% confident). And that he is indeed coming to Smash, and this is just a mockup design.
