Probably the weakest opening few hours of the main games IMO.1, 2, 3, and 4 all had me by the balls with their openings but this one fell flat even with all the spectacle. Then most of these initial missions are very simple with unimpressive scenario design that would probably feel like busywork if not for the sublime mechanics. After ~8 hours I still haven't had that little moment of "Yeah this is why I'm playing MGS." Haven't even had a single gunporn cutscene or conversation :(

Just pretend you're Sam Fisher.

Then it all feels right.

Prologue question:
If you replay the prologue, can you change the name/birth date? And if so, will it overwrite the previous one, or not?

Is there a fast travel of some sort? I thought you could take the chopper from one lz to another but I tried it and ended up back at mother base

Every big base has a "cargo loading zone". If you find one of those, take the invoice that is attached to it's sign. If you enter a box in one of these zones, and wait a bit, you get a button prompt that allows you to fast travel between areas from which you've collected these invoices.

Same method also works on mother base, but you don't have to collect any invoices there.

It's nice to end a mission unnoticed and ranked S.. but i kinda want to play around and have fun. So fuck that :P

Dude. You can get S-rank easily by having fun and going all-out guns.

- do the mission very quickly. Within 15 minutes
- extract all the prisoners and guards you can

If you do these two things, and you only have one alert which you prolong for ages, you can get S-rank while blasting through tens of bad guys and having alerts everywhere.

Happened for me twice so far!

not that i know of,,

The moment you take the chopper (as in pick up from battlefield), you then have to pay for gmp for your next deployment..

the best thing is just wander around picking up side quest and main mission as you free roam, then use a supply drop if you ran out of ammo, way cheaper than going back to the chopper.. if you choose a main mission while free roaming (not at the chopper or at the mother base), there will be supply at the mission start point,,

but still, you need to go back to motherbase often to boost staff morale.. i just had an uprising back at the mb because i spent to much time on the field..

Guys, there is fast travel.

> Find the orange/yellow 'transport stations' in every medium-large base.
> pick up the invoice slip posted on the station's sign
> get in a cardboard box and sit on the station
> hold triangle to fast travel to any station you have the invoice slip for

I think they removed helicopter travel in-map because guards would notice you repeatedly and you'd end up in alerts constantly, raising the resting alert of all bases in the region.

Definitely don't get all the people shitting on the prologue. That was one of the best game intros I've ever played (including the last of us)

I just woke up and was about to start the game for the 1st time and noticed the servers are down for maintenance. Can I start the game now (offline) and then download my Ground Zeroes save later when servers are up? This is the PC version. Thanks!

Will I enjoy this if I just play through the mainline (30 or so) missions? Is it even possible to concentrate on those missions?

I just don't have a lot of time to play, so I generally make it a rule to concentrate on the story in games before messing around with other stuff, or at the very least get very near to the end of the story and then mess around to unlock endings.

I woke up early and went down to my porch and was so super pissed that the game wasn't there. I was planning on sending an angry email complaining about it. About an hour later, I remembered that we recently had a postbox installed outside my house. I checked it and there it was. Hah, I'm an idiot.

Hope you folks who got to download a few hours ago are enjoying it. Can't wait to start.

Minor Side-Ops spoilers.

Make sure you find the 'Legendary Gunsmith' as part of the Side-Ops
, because
the reward for completing the 'quest line'
is
gun-customization.

The game doesn't make that clear. I had 'completed' it before I found out. It helps with keeping your weapons feeling varied, and having more than just a few to choose from. I'm not sure exactly when you can complete it, though.

Same, however in addition you should prioritize headshots and avoid getting hit. That way you can get an S-rank even if you are shooting up the place.

You can pickup shipping labels from each main base. They're always next to an orange delivery platform, stuck on a triangular sign.

You can then equip your crate and walk onto the platform. You will then be given a triangle prompt and you get to choose your destination on the map. Bearing in mind you have to own the shipping label for each base you'd like to be "delivered" to.

hope that makes sense.

edit: As SomTervo so eloquently explained it before me.

I now have full bond with DD, AWESOME.

And finally snagged Quiet as a buddy waited ages.

I really want Quiet as a buddy, would prefer her over DD or DH.

No big spoilers, but do I need to do anything out-of-the-way to activate her as a buddy? Been
visiting her in her cell quite a lot, listening to all the tapes, etc.

Anyone finding D-Horse to be crazy slow and a little useless? I understand the mobile stealth advantage, but it just doesnt seem worth it

There's a
system of orange/yellow shipping locations scattered throughout each map that you can move between if you put yourself in a cardboard box and sit on them. There's generally one in every major base or town, but you have to go up to the platform and grab an invoice to go back to it later.

The yellow platforms in Mother Base are the best way to get around it.

Oh, haha. Nice. Thanx!
But i don't want to focus on the ranks too much.

D-Horse is more reliable than a vehicle, I find. He can navigate some of the rougher terrain, and he's always at your beck and call.

Just finish some Main Ops untill Ocelot calls you to her cell

Difficult call. For the first 10-15 hours, yes, but once you start progressing further, you'll encounter missions that have 'recommended' gear.

So for example a mission might say 'Recommended equipment: Missile'. So the mission will be really hard (but not impossible) if you don't have that. And to get a missile weapon, you probably need to spend 1-2 hours doing side ops just to improve Mother Base and research a missile launcher.

It would be difficult. But it's doable.

You can turn on the Chicken Hat in the menu if you want 'easy mode', and that would probably make things go much quicker.

God damn this game. I will spoiler tag this post as I'm unsure what is and isn't considered a spoiler and don't want to ruin anything for anyone

That fucking intro was amazing. Is Ishmael dead then? I really wish more games did this whole extended intro thing (Last of Us intro was also excellent). I'm probably on main mission 5? Can't quite remember, but it's around there. I have mostly spent my time on side ops trying to get a hang on the stealth gameplay. I can get decently far into clearing an outpost or base without any alerts, but shit usually breaks loose just before the end and I have to switch to full auto hahaha.

I found DD, but he's just a puppy atm. I also heard Russians speaking of Quiet. I went to the area they mentioned (Power Plant) but I didn't have any luck finding her. Do you find her through a main mission, or am I just not looking hard enough?

You'll find Quiet...
on 11th mission, when you go to look for Huey... I did 9 missions when that one appeared...

It's kind of funny that this game has Big Boss in helicopters so much. Seems like he might would have a bit of trauma for them considering, ya know, he has a piece of metal sticking out of his head from a ride in one. But then again he is Big Boss. Doesn't give too many fucks, if any fucks.

I don't know how someone can say the intro was boring. Insane spectacle and it looks.so.good. on my PC.

press up a few times
watch cutscene
press up some more
watch cutscene
crawl
watch cutscene
wait
cutscene
push up
oh now you are walking
cutscene
crawl
wait
cutscene

then (SUPER ULTRA CLIMACTIC BOSS BATTLE SPOILER WARNING )
you walk around a room, a cutscene plays, then you walk out the door, and more cutscenes play)

that's exciting to you? to each his own

Yeah, but this helicopter has a manual door. None of that unreliable button press shit.

Just keep playing, happened for me at mission 15 or 16

Excellent tip.

Word up, babe

Oh, haha. Nice. Thanx!
But i don't want to focus on the ranks too much.

Very wise. Just play the thing for fun. That's what I'm doing. S-ranks are a nice bonus.

Watch out for important side objectives though. Sometimes there are side objectives that unlock more, important side missions.

Just finish some Main Ops untill Ocelot calls you to her cell

Excellent, cheers pal.

What are the "obtainable skills/blueprints" in the mission select screen? Items I can pick up in the world, skills (?) I can get by doing the bonus mission tasks or something like that?

So it's my birthday today

After A Hero's Way, Kaz said to head back to motherbase and it's urgent. Got back and heard gunshots, which turned to fireworks sounds.
Then Miller, Ocelot, and the gang all sang happy birthday to me! There was also cake! Big Boss even smiled!!!!

Best birthday ever.

I don't know how someone can say the intro was boring. Insane spectacle and it looks.so.good. on my PC.

It's very well done and i thought it was the best opening ever. But gameplaywise it's not far from the first level of The Order 1886. And everybody hated that.

.
Yeah, not sure yet how to watch out for them.. ;P

how do you set your helicopter entrance music?

On the cassette tab in the i-droid just play a song you've collected and there should be a prompt at the bottom for "set as helicopter music".

You have to have developed the upgrade for a speaker on your chopper for it to work though.

edit; Ninja'd by Mentalbroccoli. Dayum this thread moves fast.

Watched Straight Outta Compton last night, came home set MGSV to download on Steam and went to sleep. Just woke up and I'm ready to play MGSV straight for the rest of the day.

V has come to!

I heard an analogy that fits it well, I think.

It's MGS4's Microwave Hallway as a full level, with all the pros and cons of being that.

That Chicken Hat sounds hilarious.

Is the game roughly 30 hours long if you just plow through the main story missions? I think that's what I've read, but I've also heard 50 hours, but I assume that includes messing with side ops for the fun of it and not for story progression.

Really? I thought mgs3 has a very weak opening.

I can still feel my hand so no it wasn't as bad. I really liked the intro.

Probably helps that I wasn't expecting the game proper to kick in for at least an hour.

yea, he is one tough SOB.

Really want to play this, but don't want to/can't play the others first, and not interested in reading a bunch of backstory. Is the game's story easy enough to follow without playing the others?

I didn't plow through the game, but it was about that for me. 35 or so hours, with 30% of the side missions done, before I saw the credits roll.

Still playing it though, about 58 hours in, and there's still stuff to get done.

Has anyone gotten their Konami Core code for this yet? The servers apparently were updated last night and when I log in it still says to check back soon....

I should note that I don't have TPP yet (picking it up in about an hour).
