Well, just had the coolest vehicle "boss fight" of the series.
Side op with the tanks and APCs.
took some out with RPGs while on horseback, C4 in the road for others, hijack a Russian truck which had a Javelin missile launcher and kill a few tanks with that. running out of time and ammo I rush across the zone to catch an APC while fighting it with freaking hand grenades.

Any way to speed up time in the game? Hard to see stuff during nighttime. Then again I'm at the first village in chapter 1 :/

It is supposed to be hard to see stuff at night.

That's the whole purpose of attacking at night, so you can use the lack of visibility to your advantage for stealth.

Also enemy patrols are more lax at night.

Use your NVG's.

Haha! Awesome!

I walked into that boss battle at random. I didn't have a sniper. So I had MB make one and was blown away that you could just deliver it right then and there!
Yeah I didn't have one either so I had no idea what to do at first then I remembered
I'd once accidentally dropped a supply drop on myself and it did non lethal damage.

Is there an easy way to stop and start a cassette tape? I want to listen to them but every time I get near enemies I have to go through like 4 menus just to pause or play.

Played for a few hours last night. I'm honestly astonished by how well the switch to an open world has gone. It's basically a Snake simulator now. I *love* how well everything ties into Mother Base. Reminds me of how well the tactical and stratgic modes blend in XCOM.

And on top of all this, we have the ridiculous in-engine cutscenes and MGS insanity, polished to hell and back. AND there's a first-class PC port on day one.

So yeah, I'm pretty happy about MGS5.

I'd appreciate this as well. It wouldn't be so bad if the iDroid remembered the last menu you were using.

I wonder... What if you can drop a supply drop on Quiet, and I wonder if it knocks her out instantly, ending the fight.

I'm confused about shutting down communications for enemy camps. I've come across "communications" camps before, and Kaz said something about destroying them to cut off enemy radio communications.

The most I've managed to do is turn off some generator looking thing next to the building with the satellite on top, but it seemed like enemies were still calling in reinforcements over the radio afterward.

look for some "satllite antennas" (not the AA one). Blow it up with C4 or shoot it (it WILL cause an alert tho)

This has probably been asked a million times, so sorry, but how does the PS3 version compare to the PS4 version? I don't have a PS4 yet and probably won't get one till sometime next year but I really wanna play this game BUT I don't want a watered down version graphically. Lol.

Night vision goggle selection seems buggy. When you unequip them, it will sometimes not allow you to quickly re-equip them without having to hold down the button and flick the stick manually.

Played for a couple of hours last night.

This is by far the most complex game I've ever had the pleasure of controlling. On that note, the tutorial is incredibly deep and intelligent; simple tasks are repeated, ensuring intuitiveness, but they're tied in a way that serves the plot, thus feeling absolutely natural. You almost forget that you're learning the ropes.

The camera work is also amazing. It's shot in a very rugged, handheld way, but its transition between cutscenes and gameplay is smooth as butter. It has some very slick programming. The animations are stunning, and other third person adventure games pale in comparison to the feature-rich set of stances, animations, and abilities.

The UI is very clean, stylized, and surprisingly easy to explore. Again, it's a testament to how good the game is slowly revealing all its tricks and features.

Amazing experience. Hideo Kojima is an auteur.

I'm starting to realize I'm not into non-mmo open world games anymore. I get side mission, walking simulator, and collecting crap fatigue. I wish this was linear.

accidentally did this and I felt terrible..

MONSTER!!!!!!!!

BTW, is there an option to keep this offline? I don't want any part of the FOB invasions and all that. Want to keep it single player only.

And the phantom cigar speeds up time

I'm sure this sounds stupid but how are supposed to *stop* time with the cigar? R3 doesn't seem to work to stop like it does to start so I just ended up hitting random buttons, moving the stick, etc until it stops and I've missed my target time by a good 6 hours.

I'm not talking about stuff like that. I hadn't seen many titles on NeoGaf specifically about stuff in the game -- like things that amazed them, interesting things or aspects about the world, gameplay, threads with links to youtube videos, etc. Stuff I'd expect forums and sites to be buzzing about, especially when it comes to an open world game like this.

I also didn't see many articles on the front page of a bunch of different game sites - some mentioned that it had launched, or had a review up, another had an article. I wasn't even sure if it had launched yet. When other large games launched, like Skyrim, GTA5, sites, forums, etc. were filled with stuff about the games.

where have you been?

right (or left?) on the D-pad IIRC

The open world itself is a mixed bag but the bigger bases are so MGS3 that its amazing. Quality level design off the charts.

I'm so impatient and in such a hurry to vacuum more people that my style has sort of evolved to its most essential essence.. I march confidently through the base, rarely even spending a lot of time marking before going in, and have my tranq out. I throw mags and grapple people from behind as needed, but I just keep moving and rarely stand still, and if I get seen a tranq to the face during bullet time has a very high chance of avoiding alerts.

I'm a fulton machine.

Huh. I wonder what those generators are for, then. They definitely seem to be linked to the buildings with the antennas.

that will just shut them off but the soldiers will just get there and turn them on again. :)
blowing them up is the most effective way to prevent them from calling for backup

So a couple of questions about the prologue :
- Can I replay it? I got an A and OCD in me wants to get an S, I just finished it and the game went straight to mission 1

- Was that face you get to choose how Snake looks now? Or just how he was supposed to look like if the surgery would have taken place?

- Do we get to know who the heck is Ishmael?

- And lastly, wasn't that re-encounter between Big Boss and Ocelot a little bit on the anticlimactic side? "Hi I'm Revolver Ocelot, you know me " after the events of MGS 3 that re-encounter was kind of meh

Compared to mgs 3 the cinematography and encounters with old friends they are all anti climatic.

Ok Im gonna be honest, I am not a huge Metal Gear fan, I completed the first 2, really enjoyed 1, was super disappointed with 2 and gave up on 3 just about half way through. I heard 4 was like watching a movie so I gave it a pass.

Im off sick from my work just now with sever fibromyalgia so I figured Id get this day 1 to stop the cabin fever. Holy shit, this game is incredible, the open world is great, the mission selection is outstanding, upgrading Mother Base actually feels necessary and Im finding myself walking around for materials rather than doing main mission objectives.

The story is still fucking nuts but I can forgive that with how much I am enjoying the rest of the game.

Phantom Cigar

Phantom Cigar.

Getting a little tired of the horde of D rank volunteers I'm getting after each mission, go out of my way to only Fulton A rank or higher soldiers, finish a mission, 5 D rank, 3 C rank volunteers.

Smoke the cigar.

It is supposed to be hard to see stuff at night.

Thanks! Much much easier now!

Firing a gun in first person while also in reflex mode looks so damn cool. I love how fiery and awesome the muzzle flashes look. That and the radio static punch of someone getting headshot. And the distant screams of someone flying through the sky as they're being fultoned. And how real gunfire sounds from a distance. What I'm trying to say is that the sound design in this is impeccable.

I think I'm going to have to switch to a controller. Ground Zeroes was great with mouse and keyboard but for some reason if feels weird and different in Phantom Pain. The main problem is that it seems like I can't sneak up behind soldiers to restrain them anymore. In GZ there was a possibility that a "!" would appear over their head but I'd have them in my grasp right after that. In PP they are alerted before I'm in range and end up restraining them in reflex mode. It seems that analog control is now absolutely needed for sneakiness and the CTRL sneak mode is way too slow.

This is compounded by the fact that if I don't hold CTRL when walking into a door Snake decides to slam it open aren't helping.

You could always develop the
Sneaking Suit which muffles your footsteps.

Can I get a ride on the chopper to another drop zone without going back to the ACC?

Nope.

Does anyone else thinks that the sound work for this game is like... cheap? the sound of choppers or footsteps or specially D.Horse... I literally hate D.Horse when he starts running, makes me love Roach when I never loved him.

Other than that the game is awesome, spent like two hours planning/executing mission 3 and it payed off.

This game is addicting I had to take a 5 day weekend for labor day... 70 hours an mission 15 with 30 side ops, can't pass up one out post with all the tools we can use. This is a masterpiece of level open world games

The Base Development strut produces Materials regularly.

You want to expand the other struts so can hold more people. Maybe you're really early but there will be some missions where you extract 10+ soldiers or more. It will get crowded fast.

If you don't want to decide what weapons to invest in and have not found your style yet, then just focus on the basics: upgrade your Fulton so you can double your capacity and start fultoning cargo and equipment. There are also certain common sense upgrades, like upgrading the speed on your chopper.

Thank you!!! Going to build up the base development strut asap! Collecting materials is always tiresome in open world games and I would rather not risk the mission just in order to collect materias

I can't see or feel the difference between stealth prone and prone.

I didn't try this, but can we still shoot the guards radios so they can't communicate?

Bah, got to mission 30 now. The game is starting to irritate me now, the checkpoints are awful, sometimes back at the start of a mission.
Not enough sneaking going on for my liking either, there's a lot of shooting
