Just watched the Quiet and Snake dance in the rain scene...

Hahahaha, oh god that was so awful. So glad that wasn't a part of my play through.

MGS2's reaction led to MGS3.

A more simple story with a character who is definitively a Snake and which poked fun at that "gay Raiden" guy.

Yeah, rightfully so. But the conspiracy mindset has stuck around and Kojima was so obviously playing with that with the Joakim Mogren and Moby Dick Studios stunts.

Like Raiden it is a twist, but also it has the meta element of referring to the player. MGS2 done that with a lot more class; though Raiden isn't literally the player, and likely doesn't look like the player, he is the player's window into this world. When Snake speaks to him at the end he is speaking to the player also. Compare that to MGSV's hammy "You're Big Boss. Carry that with you" and the difference in approach is obvious.

Raiden fits the role as both a player avatar while still being his own character with a personality and development throughout the game. He becomes his own character at the end of the game. V's character arc is going from being an unaware impersonator to an aware one. Not compelling stuff.

Wow I never saw that but yeah that was hammy.

So first it said an unannounced Nintendo platform, then it became Nintendo Dreamcast, and that is supposed to make it obvious that it's fake because? Why make it obvious that it's fake if the intention is to fool people into thinking it's real?

And how did it manage to get so many connections to Kojima/MGS so ahead of time, before there was any hint Kojima would leave Konami? It had quotes from The Boss, it has the A Hideo Kojima Game thing, Kojima twittered about Orwell's 1984 before, the site is called Ingsoc, images shown so far look like Silent Hill, etc.

So let me get this straight. You seriously believe that Nintendo's next platform will be called "Nintendo Dreamcast".

It's a nice theory but some of the avatars you can choose are black. It's a bit of a stretch to think that old soldiers that had worked with BB and others like Huey would be willing to accept that BB had been turned into a black man via surgery.

I mean...I'm not ruling anything out..

Also a very good point.

Edit: Also note that "Kojima is fired" was in April, the first time KojimaLives twittered #kojimalives was May 11, just a few weeks later.

this is the stupidest fucking thing I've ever read, and i've read the story spoilers for metal gear solid v: the phantom pain

Yes!!!

Really? It's a joke. Do you really think it's going to be A #### ###### Game? It's there just to make people talk, why wouldn't it have put Nintendo Dreamcast from the start then?

Remaking MG 1 and 2 seem like the obvious choices

They'll want to keep the gameplay mechanics developed in this game as much as possible. Maybe not the specifics of recruiting a whole army, but at least having some buddies, and the open world aspect. They can't turn around and do some MGS1-style sneaking mission game. This game has been pretty successful so far too, a lot of people who never played MGS are playing it because they like the gameplay mechanics.

That being said, in the timeline and Ocelot/Kaz talk, they do put a lot of emphasis on the future Outer Heaven being a nation, so they might retcon that MG1's Outer Heaven isn't just a base but really a country. In that case, they could at least keep the open world notion. But I don't see them doing away with the buddy and crew system.

I think it's more likely that they would make another MGS where Big Boss builds an army, but maybe have SS being the final boss or whatever, or you play as SS at the end to take everything down. Just a remake? Nah.

you know I was never able to see reflection in chopper, donno where it is.
Also you mean there's something special for 100% ?

Look at the window in the chopper and hit zoom. You will see your user created phantom. Not sure if the reflection is effected by different weather conditions though. And the pictures of you on the wall of the chopper have you conveniently covered.

And I have no idea if anything will be revealed at 100%.

MG 1 and 2 are really old games and not a lot of people are particularly attached to them (Esp 2 which never even came out in the US) so they could take some giant liberties with them if they wanted.

They're the foundation.

If you take giant liberties with them then the series exists in some Möbius strip of changing canon.

Well considering how they hammer that Outer Heaven is not just a military base but a nation, I think they are at least changing the part that really should be changed if we want to keep the open world approach.

Plus, I think Outer Heaven being a nation you infiltrate (maybe have to take over first, probably a warring country), would be a lot more fun than the old villain base. I think it could work. Now who would you play is the question, but whatever, it'd be fun either way I think. Imagine taking over the open world areas, and once you got everything, you have to play as Snake, infiltrating it, and the choices you made as Big Boss are all still there.

This may be the first time ever we've agreed on something. The MSX were the base of the franchise. All the rest of the games were built upon them. Heavily retconning them is unnecessary and just plain dumb.

i thought i made sense of the ending. but then it all fell apart when i started picking at the threads that didn't work.

i can see the creative logic of why the twist is there though. how can you surprise people when they already know how the story ends?

You don't always need to surprise someone to tell a story. MGSV could have just been a revenge story with an added downfall into being "bad". I thought this was going to start with the parasite infection and you're walking around shooting unarmed men, men who salute you and Big Boss realising that it doesn't matter what he does, soldiers will always suffer so why fight it? That should have been the breaking point.... but kind of gets forgotten.

One thing I found curious, is there no cutscene at all related to that? Big Boss has to kill his men because they are infected, but there is no actual cutscene at all. You'd think for such an important moment there would be no? None that relate to this before, nor after. If you only watched the cutscenes of the game, you'd never even see that moment. Feels like it was an afterthought. Or maybe I missed something.

Exactly.

I just wanted to see this in HD.

A simple plot ala MGS3 would have been the best for this type of prequel since we know nothing too crazy can happen.

You get a message to return to base and then you're told what happened (it is one factor that leads to Huey's trial and "you are all diamonds" scenes) and there's the cutscene from the trailer were Big Boss is on his kneess in the bloody corridor. It just feels like this was supposed to "break" Big Boss but they seemed to forget to make him, well, evil.

No, there's cutscenes of them burning soldiers. That's where the 'Turn them into diamonds' thing came from.

His face in that art slays me. It's like he's saying "C'mon quit it" and they are having a playful father and son fight..but with flames.

Also shows how ridiculous the whole fight is.

A young (retired) Solid Snake ends up burning the greatest soldier in history with a fucking lighter and can of hairspray. Fucking badass.

Then Eva pipes up "Okay boys, dinner time"

I would watch a 90s multicam live audience sitcom show of the snake family.

Then about season 5, in the face of tanking ratings, they feel forced to add a new character that moves in with them.

"Hey guys, it's me, Uncle Ahab!" *crowd applauds and woops on command*

It works, the greatest solider to ever live being outwitted in resourcefulness by his "son".

And just before that Solid Snake beat Gray Fox twice (the best soldier FOXHOUND has ever had) first time when Fox is piloting Metal Gear, second time straight after that in a fist fight on a freaking minefield. A minefield.

I'll always enjoy that Solid Snake, the one with the recessive genes, not the one with the good genes, not the perfect clone, always comes out on top. A very uplifting tale of not letting your genes or the SINS OF THE FATHER dictate the future, you make that future yourself. A real life lesson for us all, we can all accomplish great things and our genetics do not dictate that.

THANK YOU, HIDEO KOJIMA.

A re-imagining of the first metal gear games that builds towards the Big Boss versus Solid Snake showdown game would be pretty great from a marketing perspective but I dont see it happening.

Konami are ether never going to make a new AAA Metal Gear game again OR if they do they will probably completely reboot it and the only story connections are the main character is a guy called Snake and in the end he fights a giant robot.

I'd like to see Konami try to reboot it, tbh.

Much like Resident Evil things build on other things and everything becomes needlessly complicated, even though Metal Gear had the benefit of being headed by the same person for all of its existence.

Exactly.

I live in hope that many years from now, there'll be an update to the game that most will ignore. But if you spend a few more hours playing, an intruder alert will go off and you need to defend your FOB and Mother Base. But all your men are killed and you wait for the intruder in the R&D platform, only to see it's a young Solid Snake. In a fight, that you cannot win, you get burned to ashes. A message appears.

PLEASE BUY METAL GEAR SOLID 6: SNAKE'S REAVENGEANCE - A KEIJI INAFUNE GAME

More like "Please Kickstart Keiji Inafune's MGS Project", amirite?

Did anyone ever figure out what developing a nuke does BTW? Is there any practical use (can I use it on an enemy FOB) or is it just another thing for an invader to steal?

I believe it's an FOB thing.

Seems like you can nuke other nuclear capable FOBs. I think I heard that it kills all of their troops. I don't know if it destroys the FOB.

A dozen hours in and so far I feel like Miller is the surrogate character for what Big Boss should have been. Blood thirsty for revenge. Tormented by the loss of his limbs. Willing to do anything to get what he wants. etc...

Maybe its why the voice actor is over acting so much. Trying to fill the void left by Keifer.
