Well...

You need to remember that some people seem to have a fairly loose grip on reality.
Still can't believe this was a thing.

I'm gonna be honest, I still hate the twist, but Venom might be one of my favorite Metal Gear characters simply because he isn't an asshat. I hate him because he's not really BB, but I love him because he says really nice things to his friends like "you're all diamonds".

What a sweetheart.

Is Kojima even aware of the character he created? In what way is V an "Ogre" or "Demon"? You're right the guy's a big soft teddy bear.

Torturing scum like Huey and killing your men to prevent an epidemic aren't examples of evil deeds.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

The Hero/Demon system is so half-baked too. You get Heroism points for virtually everything you do in terms of missions or Side-Ops. Unless you're going around wantonly killing prisoners (which would be pointless, considering you need them to develop upgrades and weapons/items), being evil is pointless. Complete a Mission? Heroism. Rescue someone? Heroism. Clean out an outpost? You still get Heroism. You can't really become a Demon until the very end of the game (develop lots of nukes), and that seems to be for shits and giggles more than anything else.

And I still don't understand why he's "Venom", considering he's either being incredibly selfless/remorseful or he's being played by others.

Uh... yes they are. Lol. Or rather, they raise the idea of how any sort of action can be justified and appear righteous if you want it to.

That's the problem. The game doesn't support your narrative.

Huey is suspected of being the one who called Cipher in on Mother Base in the first place, and (as we later find out) he left his wife to die in an AI pod, tried to turn his son into a weapon and attempted to cause another outbreak. By all rights, he should have been executed for his crimes, but he still gets mercy from Venom. Same goes for Mission 43 - Venom is incredibly remorseful about having to kill his own men (just like the player, if they know who these soldiers are), and they salute him, knowing what he has to do. He nearly has a breakdown afterwards because of what he's done.

Yea but I'm still not entirely convinced in that was this not about how BB became the villain we know from MG1 and on..no? Except that guy doesn't exists. I mean everyone wondered how he could be a villain in MG1 when he wasn't like that before, he did become a villain elsewhere but it's not what everyone was wondering about was it.

I donno man, I better not spend more time thinking about this crap. lol

Big boss was just a guy trying to get a metal gear.

Its not like he was out to destroy the world

So what is the explanation for seeing BB get mowed down in the hospital hallway, but then reappears in the next room?

Is it meant to just be another patient who is wearing the exact same robe and with head and right hand bandages?

Edit: I think it helps that the avatar I created looks really plausible to be a possible double for BB. When I saw the cutscenes with the medic I saw this guy, sans bandana obviously:

Looks like a guy who idolizes Boss to me, as well as similar enough where plastic surgery could be very plausible. Maybe that contributes to why the twist didn't feel too jarring to me, at least in some senses.
That bandana really sells the similarity. Compared to say, a black or asian guy getting face surgery=completely different skin tone and hair growth.

i feel that now that we have the Complete Collected Works of Hideo Kojima and the Metal Gear Myth Cycle in our cultural possession, I should roll up my sleeves and type out a start to finish chronological account of the Metal Gear saga, from MGS3 to Revengeance

It will keep every single plot hole and retcon

Do it do it dooooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittt

I'd love to read it

Actually yeah. You can actually see him cut off out of the hallway, and the camera focuses on someone who isn't actually him.

This game story-wise basically did nothing I wanted it to do.

What a bummer.

Also, I think the impact of medic guy was dampened by my avatar:

So... does anyone know why chapter 2 was called "Race"?

All I can think of is that they called it that because they were clearly racing to finish it so they could ship it on time.

really? i didn't realise that.

I was wondering this too.

I remember it being said before that the game was going to deal with race.

All I took out of it was that anglo-saxons are bad.

It sounded edgy?

Really I think Kojima was going to do something pretty sketchy with regards to Africa and child soldiers and Konami lawyers said "you better not do that"

Just managed to get an S Rank on a mission while using the Cyborg Ninja skin? Says it restricts you from getting them. Maybe only the first time?

I too should have the Raiden skin, but don't. Meh.

I remember the eye and the finger not showing up in my base for quite some time too... probably just a delay.

I beat the game and don't have that. Do I have to beat those optional extreme missions?

You probably do. Check your Key Items section.

From the guide:

Grand Master Certificate (Standard): Complete all missions (except those on a
high difficulty level) with an S-Rank. Can be used to develop the Raiden
uniform.

Master Certificate (Standard): Complete all main missions (except those on
high difficulty levels) with any rank. Can be used to develop the Cyborg Ninja
uniform.

People keep confusing this with GZ savefile transfer. It has nothing to do with it. You have to beat the game to unlock these uniforms.

Weird. I got all the other bonuses including solid snake. I want the costume just to sprint fast as shit and do side ops with it.

It's not even that fast. If you've upgraded your mobility, it's about the same.

It unlocks by obtaining one of the Master Certificate key items (which are given by completing the game) - it doesn't transfer over from GZ.

Ah, my bad.

In metal gear 2 Big Boss steals nukes from disposal sites and Zanzibar becomes the only nuclear power. He then invades places at will. Both him and Liquid wanted world conquest.

Can't shake the depression about all of this, lol how sad am I?

It continues to grind on me.

I've never been so bothered by a game ending before. Usually I pass off bad endings as bad endings and forget about them 5 minutes later.

MGSV is.. hanging. It's a bad smell.

Maybe what he meant is how capable and "badass" Quiet is.

If that's the case, though, he shouldn't have made her the pandering character that she is.

You can only really appreciate Venom if you look at what he gives rather than what he takes away. Yes, he robbed us of a true BB game and the stories it could have told, but there's something to appreciate there if you put that to the side.

I feel like Two Face when I think about the plot in this game. I love and hate it, and not just the different parts of it but the same exact parts of it.

No joke my avatar looked identical to this.

100% agreed. Fantastic character marred by pointless shitty sexist design/camera angles. I just don't get the point at all. If it's an antithesis to anything it would be Bayonetta who uses sexuality as a statement of power rather than pandering to the viewer.

On another note; I think this game and the story is completely fantastic and the theme of language and how it relates to ethnicity/culture has been somewhat eye-opening to me. I wish people were discussing that more than the silly (but entertaining) twist. Actually putting people in quarantine made me feel like Hitler for a second. As I hadn't had this part spoiled, I wasn't sure if Kikongo was the actual cause or just me being a paranoid crazy person discriminating against certain people on my base. Would I have liked a function to sort by language? Perhaps - but the tedium in sifting through every single one of my 700+ staff members just looking for Kikongo to show up made it feel a lot more personal, whether or not this was actually intended by the developers. If so; this is completely amazing game design. The game pretty much made you an apartheid overseer for a while, though I'm not sure if everyone actually picked up on that subtext or if it was presented well enough. Somehow I think most people don't expect gameplay decisions to relate to the story/themes in this way.

I didn't bother quarantining anyone. I knew the story would take care of it if I moved forward with it. That does sounds really cool. I hate that I missed it.

It's really hit me hard. I broke up with my girlfriend last week and MGSV kept me afloat for a while but then seeing that shit ending yesterday has really sent me to a low point.

We were promised so much but Kojima decided he'd rather the ego boost of trolling people than actually filling in the missing link.

The worst thing is that I actually love the gameplay but all I can think of while playing it now is that I'm not really Big Boss.

I hate that the game teased a cure over the course of a couple of missions. It caused me to ignore everything and blast through the missions so I could progress the story past that part and stop losing soldiers. Ah well, what can you do. I still enjoyed the twist.
