Destiny The Taken King Review Thread

Taken King is getting eviscerated in the user ratings in metacritic. Any legitimate reason for this or is it the usual Destiny hatedom?

Skimming through the reviews the majority seem to be complaints about either the price or the way the Taken King interacts with past Dlc. Some people are giving a bad review because they are angry that because they didn't buy the Taken King that their options are now limited in the game. This is not really a valid criticism of the Dlc itself though.

So I need to pay another $40 to play the game I was supposed to get when I bought PS4 with destiny...not cool Bungie :/

I honestly didn't like this game specially the SP (I was expecting an epic SP campaign, but what we go was repetitive enemies and missions) or co-op since it was same stuff recycled again and again. The MP was good for a bit but as I was not able to put a lot of time into the game, I was getting handed left and right as other players were leveled up. And I hated the awful grinding.

Is any of that changed? How is this better compared to the original release?

I mean its still a multiplayer focused game. Its an MMO whether Bungie want to admit it or not. That said the story content for TTK is leagues above anything in Vanilla Destiny or the previous DLCs but I still would not recommend the game for campaign play only. Thats not what the game is designed to be

I feel like they should wait till the Raid comes out since that's a pretty significant chunk of this thing. But I guess a review doesn't serve much purpose two weeks out.

Why is everyone hating it on metacritic?

There are salty people who have a grudge against bungie and having left Halo / MS....

You also see it in forums...

How can they give a proper review without raid or end-game events?
Probably why you're not seeing some reviews until then, if Joe in the office is tasked with reviewing the game, but Steve is the office destiny junky, they will obviously not let Steve review it because he would be bias....

Question is, will Joe follow through with the quests after the story to get the right gear to do the raid on Friday?

Agreed, frequently there is a lot of excitement until you find the new grind a few weeks in...
The game will always has a grind due to mmo traits. Any game that has a reset every week will have a grind.

Only difference is, they put a lot more to do in the game now to make it less tedious (that's not to say someone who has not played destiny everyday last year at its barest would enjoy it)

I will say this, I think it's kind of cool that a lot of people will pop into this game because of positive reviews, and they will never know about the loot cave, a crappie cryptarch, a bare tower. They won't know about how Atheon needed bumpers or what it was like to be stuck at 28 until some random raid gear dropped.

I live in Australia.

I like Destiny, i have all the past DLC, I want The Taken King... My 2 options are: Buy everything again, now with TTK for $79... OR Spend $70 on JUST the DLC pack on PSN...

I'd rather pay THE SAME PRICE for mgs:v. I'm sorry, I've been loyal and love the game, but dam... I thought already owning Destiny, Dark Below and House of Wolves would mean I would get something more than $9 off the dam price... On top of that $70? Like I said, NEW FULL games are that price...

The "online pass" lives on. :P

It just screams lazy to me that they re release a game at full price and can't even put the content on the actual disc, but force me to download it off of a card that they just throw in there.

I guess this decision doesn't surprise me considering the game itself.

So I ended up buying this this morning and playing for while today. Beat the new campaign in just a few hours. I skipped the first two DLCs but I ran through the story missions quickly over the weekend to prepare for TTK. Already hit level 40 with my Hunter today. Overall it is a fairly big improvement over the original game. The PvP still kinda sucks but the PvE content and the loot are great.

May i ask how the loot has been improved?

I played through to level 20 and stopped, cuz the game just didn't have enough good content, and there wasn't a good way to meet people and figure out raids (like in WOW).

Doesn't seem like the expansion changes anything. I'm just gonna wait for destiny 2

I'm glad its getting some good reviews and that it tweaks a lot of things people had problems with, but 40 dollars is a bit too much for me I think. I enjoyed vanilla destiny, but I'm not in a huge rush to upgrade to TTK atm. Maybe if it was like 20 bucks I would have jumped on it.

Why would they allow the expansion dlc to be simply put on a disc and kill sales?

One dude could buy it and let 50 people install the disc and give it back to him. That makes quite literally no sense.

It's unbelievable that anyone is reviewing this before the raid is even out, let alone giving it meaningless numbers like "8.7."

Yeah can't say I disagree. I would say a full weeks worth of play is needed with Raid play to give an accurate review. The general consensus seems to be hugely more positive for TTK than Vanilla Destiny and I expect it to score higher but these reviews are kind of crazy early.

To really trust a review I think people should look for

1. At least 1 full week of play time
2. All story complete
3. All strikes played
4. Some time in crucible
5. Raid play / completion

Is the story presented much better this time around? More fleshed out or anything? Trying to decide if i should get it after not liking original vanilla Destiny because of the lack of story.

I doubt the other Destiny haters even knew that this was coming out today, I certainly didn't. The people rating it on Metacritic are most likely Destiny players/fans.

There is actual story missions complete with cut scenes, dialog that's more than a few sentences, and guardians. You know those guardians that was lifeless and didn't say much before actually have a personality now. I have only done a few missions but there is clearly a massive differences...nonetheless will it hold up in the end? I can't say.

Not a fan of Gametrailers?

Tbh there's gonna be people who never see the end game in Destiny, they just wanna know what's new and how things have changed. I'm fine with that type of review.

If this is what Destiny should have been then why charge for it if I already own the game.

I would give it a go but the expansion currently costs more then what I paid for the base game at lanch.

I loved vanilla Destiny because I hopped on the hype train at the same time as everyone I knew; bought an Xbox One, played daily, tons of good times, but it got old once I hit level 20. Fast forward to now, The Taken King really does look like what I needed to get back into it and I have a lot of faith that this will be the moment Bungie is able to fix its initial mistakes. High pay wall? Maybe, but I don't feel too bad having traded my original copy to Gamestop for $20 in their current promo, getting me totally up-to-date. Played a bit this evening and realized how much I missed the game.

I haven't been following Destiny but if they are holding the raid back for weeks like they did last year, critics shouldn't have to wait for that. They should review the content that people can access at launch and add a paragraph about the raid when it comes out. If Bungie doesn't like that, they shouldn't hold back content or they should make up for its absence in the base game. It's important that there are some reviews out when a game launches so consumers aren't going in blind. 8.7 is nonsense though.

Nice! Thanks for the impressions!

I will toss in I have heard the story missions are short. It's beatable within a day. So take it with a grain of salt, there does seem to be a lot of improvement compare to vanilla destiny. But from what I have seen, I wouldn't recommend it if you are interested in a story driven fps game.

VoG opened one week after release, same as King's Fall for this.

Thanks for clarifying this for me - I was on the fence for purchasing an Aussie retail release but if it's just a DLC code it won't work with my US PSN account. Looks like digital it is, but with our horrific exchange rate it'll cost me over A$100 for the pack.

Not including all this content on the disc is ridiculous, and seems super lazy and misleading. (Though, I'm sure it's printed on the box. That won't stop me stamping my feet :P )

As someone who might not ever play raids, I just want to know if the base game is better for a solo player. I own Destiny but got bored and stopped playing once I hit LV10. It sounds like it's much better for a player like myself, this time around.

I feel like most people who love raids are probably going to grab TTK no matter what. Seems like a safe assumption, IMO.

I'm just too far gone to give it another go at this point, especially with all the Fall releases coming up.

I'll just wait for Destiny 2.

Most likely no. Destiny will get very boring fast on your own. It's a type of game that requires people to play with. I put in over 5 weeks of gameplay time but 99.9% of the time I played, it's with a group of people. Don't even know what the vanilla story missions are about besides something darkness and light.
