Destiny The Taken King Review Thread

Keep playing the campaign. You'll hit the Dark Below quest line at about level 10, and House of Wolves some time later. By the time you've done them and the other original story missions, you'll be level 25. Or sooner if you run Crucible or patrols, etc.

You know, I know some will claim they're being greedy... But I feel like with the revamped quest system among other things... The reasons for needing to own TDB and HoW start to make sense.

So, time to buy Destiny?

The beta made it a no buy way back at launch, but I'm sure a ton has changed since then.

I'm in the same spot, but decided to wait for more reviews since five of the six sites posted on TTK's metacritic page gave vanilla Destiny pretty high scores, so they already liked the game.

It for sure makes sense. You need the previous 2 expansions for TTK to make sense. Stuff like Strike Playlist and everything need all of them. If they broke everything up it would fragment the community.

People need to realize this is for all intents and purposes an MMO. If they don't want to keep up with the DLC and Expansions this isn't probably the game for them

Good to see it's being reviewed well. But I'm not spending more money to get this. It seems like this is what Destiny should've been to begin with.

The next time I'll spend money on something Destiny related is probably when the next big expansion like this is out (which will probably be next September), or I might just wait for Destiny 2.

ya i'm in the same boat. i don't deny that part of this is due to the fact that I've played enough destiny this year (I played a lot)... but part of it is I don't feel that LE was worth even close to 99 dollars so I am not putting out more money...

Probably destiny 2 for me. used. TTK with all content looked like an okay deal.

Approximately how many hours of single player missions and story would you guys estimate there is between this major expansion and the two smaller DLC's? 10 hours? I purchased Destiny last September, beat the missions, and then sold it for just $5 less than I paid. I enjoyed the game, despite the repetition. Was thinking of buying the new full game and expansions when they're down to $40.

Maybe 6 - 7 hours between the two DLC's and the expansion. That however is just the story missions and there is a lot of stuff to do once you complete the main story of TTK. Honestly, if you're playing just for the story levels, your going to miss out on A LOT.

So I bought Destiny at launch, got bored to shit after first 5 hours, never played again. Can I now jump back in to the good stuff? Or do I have to grind may way through the bore?

6-8 depending on gameplay.

New stuff starts at 25, and you get a one-time use item that boosts a single character to 25 with TTK.

I have vanilla destiny sans expansions on my hdd and I am so fucking tempted. But 60 sheets for three expansions with halo 5 six weeks away... I am torn.

I have not touched it since november 2014. The grind was beyond belief. Is it still the same ??

I agree with the consensus - Destiny is now what it always should have been, and as such, it's simply superb. The best console-FPS out there, easily.

Does it change the original campaign and DLC stuff? Because that content.... was not great.

I thought HoW by itself was 20 bucks. You could get that for 20, then get TTK for 40.

True enough, but that's still $60, regardless how you cut it.

If you have destiny on disc, Gamestop is giving 20 dollars for a destiny trade in towards the legendary edition. That would cut the price to 40.

I went all digital late last year, so no trading in for me!

It should be $40 for year one owners, period.

Can a non DLC owner do nightfall/weekly/daily? Probably not

Agreed, I'd give them my $40 for it today, if that was an option.

When I last checked (last night) Weekly/Daily/Nightfall were not an option, though my hunter is only a 34 so maybe it's level locked?

I'll wait to hear my friends' opinions on the game since they managed to explore every aspect of Destiny, but it's good to hear alot of stuff got improved/added with The Taken King. If they like it, I'll gladly give it and my lone Titan another chance.

You know what is good to point out, no issues with online game has been running perfect for me, probably because it's not a truly a new game

pretty sure it's $40 for expansion, $60 for original game+expansion.

Incorrect. This only works if I bought the Dark Below and House of Wolves, which I did not. I have the base game, but theres no option to buy just The Dark Below, House of Wolves and The Taken King. Have to either get the $40 for just TTK or $60 for Base Game + All 3 expansions.

These reviews and impressions are all very promising as someone who fell off pretty hard after hitting the soft cap in vanilla Destiny. No plans to jump back in, got plenty to play and not really feeling the pull, but I'll be all ears when the next phase of the game hits sometime next year. Seems like they're figuring things out.

You made 2 points, the first was the year old destiny complaint which is no where near valid any more, it changed during the expansions never mind Taken king.

Second point was you could not do any raids, but it takes minutes to team up with Destiny GAF, but you say the content was DENIED.

OK, It takes 2 minutes to team up on GAF, but that is denied to you because ? The whole point of RAIDS is a team play mechanic.

Its the same stuff, its tiring I agree. Read every Destiny thread on GAF...its the same things said usually by the same lot. Maybe we need a destiny troll chalk board ?

I was one of the first people to hit platinum here, put hundreds of hours in to raiding.

It doesn't take "two minutes".

It can take a few hours at times, there are people for whom "go to the gaf thread" has never been optimal.

Base game is pretty much free at this point.

I felt the gameplay of Destiny was always great. Actually fighting and such was insanely fun.

It was the things in between that needed work. The grinding aspects ( grinding without a monthly sub should be VERY limited ). The story sucked. The voice acting pretty much sucked. Stuff like that.

But great gameplay, great music, great environments. I had lots of fun with it while I played. Seeing the positivity I may jump back in with Taken King eventually.

I've seen in in this thread and I hear it brought up a lot so I have to ask, what is LFG? For something that's supposedly one of the game's biggest problems, I have no idea what it is.

You must not try very hard then.

Looking for group.

The function is not built into the game itself, and it absolutely should be.

Most raiding parties come together in minutes. Not in the middle of the night, and Xbox players have a tougher time, but generally they come together fast. That's been the case all year. And plenty more are scheduled in advance, such as the regular newbie runs that happen every week with organized sign ups.

The question of whether going to the GAF thread is optimal or not is kind of silly, when we're on GAF. It's right over there. If going there is too great of a barrier, then people are not really that interested to begin with.

Oooohhhh

Yeah, I agree. At least a way to clearly pong other players in the Tower/Reef

GAF is probably the next best thing though. Always had fun with gaffers.

I'm in the exact same situation, it looks promising but have Soo Much to play this year, not to mention Halo and Fallout Are yet to come.

I'm prob going to pick up Destiny again if it goes on sale at some point.

Thanks, guys. Wow that's not much for 2 DLC's and a major expansion. I totally understand that the single player missions are a small part of the game, but it's what I'm most interested in. No interest in raids or PvP. I did enjoy the Strike missions too. So if there are more of those, that would add to the attractiveness of the package as well. I think I read somewhere that there are more interesting items to find in the environments? Improved exploration would make me a lot more interested too. Exploring was damn near pointless in the original game, which was a shame.

Raid had better be on point. Decent fun with it so far...

but - i cannot get over how hilarious it is to see Hive speaking english. So out of place.

Damn [spoiler feels fucking impossible.

It's a synch. I'm sure you're stuck at the boss fight. When you go up the ramp to activate the spark thing and The boss appears jump to your left on top of that tall pillar/platform. Behind it is another, lower, walled off platform. Jump back and forth damaging the boss until victory.

If you're so inclined, it's a bit of a crap shoot but using destinylfg.net does often only take 2 minutes. It auto-sorts by platform and event you're searching for, and you can post your own session or join any existing ones. There's Also reddit.com/r/fireteams and a number of other subreddits (/r/destinysherpa is built specifically for vets helping newer players learn the ropes, etc.), plus the100.io which is more appointment-based but gives you email notifications and can lead to playing with a consistent crew who are routinely on the exact same time you are.

Since I play on ps3 I've found much better success on the above than DestinyGAF, as helpful as the community is here. There is a somewhat cynical criticism to make about how the community is creating patches for functionality that belongs in the game to begin with, but frankly there are so many different external resources to find people to play with that it's barely an issue for me.

I'm curious, how do early adopters feel in that they paid 60 for the base game a year ago that was underdeveloped and pretty rough in places, now they pay 40 to bring it up to what is being touted as "what it should've been all along" for a total of $100.

Meanwhile someone who has never played it can get the lot today for 60.

Early adopters getting screwed over again or does it not bother you? Honest question, not trying to stir anyone up.

I've just never understood people who make the argument that you're asking about. Using this same line of logic, games should never be discounted ever because it's unfair to day one buyers.

This was Bungie's first foray into this style of game. It was naive of people to assume that early buyers wouldn't end up being simply beta testers. They didn't do a proper MMO style beta. They simply did a server stress test on a small segment of game content. Real balance, content, grind, etc issues went untested until release.

Why is everyone hating it on metacritic?

gon4t9h.png

-Disc only contains the main game, everything else is in on code cards

-Too expensive if you already own Destiny

-Reductions for people that bought Destiny+Season Pass

That are the main complaints on Amazon.de. People that already spent 100 Euro on Destiny are angry that they have to pay another 40 Euro and new players get everything for 60 Euro.
