Ancient Aliens: New Nin. 3DS now offers the best SNES emulation on any handheld

Awww shiiiiiiiiit.... Just started a new game of DKC2. Newest nightly. CatSFC. Just got to here:

So far, not a single frame drop. No lag on controls (unlike on my Xperia android phone), and it looks fantastic on my new XL.

It may not seem like much, but this is significant to me - DKC2 is my favourite game of all time, ever since I first got it by chance as a birthday present when it was released back in 1995. And ever since that point, I've always wanted a decent handheld version. But until now, that's been an impossible task. The GBA port was shit. PSP emulation for SNES was poor as hell. Homebrew handhelds always had poor controls or other issues. Android devices had poor controls, lag and other issues.

This, however, is perfect. I've waited literally twenty years for this.

how is the audio? Full speed? any cracks/pops? Those are usually dealbreakers for me (like that FF7 video above where the game and audio slows down considerably)

This is so great.

In case anyone else is having the same problem I was, if whenever you try and load up one of the emulators you just get a blank top screen and a red touch screen, update your boot.3dsx to the latest version.

Physically remove your microSD card and see if it boots up fine (it should). If it does, re-insert the card while it's on, change themes (this will remove themehax), delete the Youtube app, redownload it from the eShop, and start again.

Thanks for this.

Couldn't do it unti today, (didn't have a screwdiver) but it worked. I scared myself a bit, because the sd card started auto-ejecting by itself.

God, build quality on nintendo hardware sure took a dive in the last years....

Anyone have problems getting PS1 backups working?

I tried Castlevania SotN and got this error - RetroArch: Does not have enough samples for monitor refresh rate estimation. Requires to run for at least 4096 frames.

EDIT: After some tinkering I figured it out. Unfortunately the game isn't really playable. Very low fps. :(

I get that 4096 frame error when loading cps2 game,...how do I fix that?

I hope the RA team ports fMSX and ScummVM next.

CATSFC or CATSFC Plus for SNES, gpSP for GBA, and the others should be self-apparent. Would want to know which can handle the CD platforms the best (PCE and SCD).
For PCE there's only Mednafen PCE Fast, but it's nearly flawless.

I've been using Genesis Plus GX for SCD without complaint. Haven't bothered with Picodrive yet, maybe once 32X gets up to speed.

I believe that error indicates a needed bios file is missing/wrong checksum? Bios files go in retroarch>system.
CPS2 games don't use a bios file. I'd check to make sure the proper FBA romset was being used. I made that mistake with NeoGeo.

So the retroarch can run the Sega Cd huh? If so, how do I get that working? Do I need to change the name of the files or anything?

If I need the bios, where do I need to put it on my SD card?

Thanks!

Download the bios and rename the .bin to bios_CD_U.bin. Put it in the retroarch/cores/system/ folder/

Thanks. I got it running. But I have no CD sound now.

I read I need clean bin/cue files since retroarch won't read the MP3 sound files. But if I convert my existing Iso to a bin/cue that leaves out the audio files which are already separated out files in the version of the Sega CD games I HAVE.

Not sure how to proceed.

FF VI is running pretty rough on the GBA and SNES versions.

Anybody else experiencing that?

Try CATSFC instead of CATSFC Plus. Seems to run better for me.

Honestly, it would probably be easier to just download new roms I would say. The BIN/CUE of Snatcher I tried worked perfectly fine with full audio.

I tried to download Snatcher again but it was in the exact same file format as my current version, with a bin and a lot of mp3s.

Where did you get yours from?

How big is your file size for Snatcher?

Edit: I remembers I still have some Sega Cd games on disc so I just ripped some new files and now I have sound!

Problem now is I'm having a lot of slow down in a few games, Willy Beamish and Terminator CD. What are some optimal settings to help it run better?

In on a N3DS.

THANKS.

what's the process for that?

It's in the homebrew launcher. Just run it and then from that point on, hold L while turning on your system and it will bring you directly to the homebrew screen. Just make sure you open up the theme manager before doing it. This creates the directories that the hack writes to. If you open the theme manager after installing the hack, it will uninstall and you'll have to do it again.

cool. I'll give it a shot.

Is the Youtube load generally seen as somewhat unstable?

Anybody experience a clicking sound while running snes games?

Out of the games I tried only Super metroid clicks for me.

I tried a few snes and gba games. Like most emulators in their infancy it's pretty hit or miss. They are making tremendous progress on this in a short amount of time though. I'll be refreshing this thread everyday hoping to see some major boost in compatibility !

What are some settings to enable/disable to get retroarch emulators to run a bit faster? I have some sega CD games running slow.

Maybe someone can help me with this, but every time I run homebrew and close the shell of my n3DS, the screen stays black when I reopen it and I have to completely reset the system.

Is there a fix for this?

I don't think there is anything you can do yet, apart from wait for nightlies that work better, or when they break the dynamic compiler.

Hitting the home button once will fix it for your current homebrew session.

Tried loaded street fighter alpha 3 and marvel vs capcom in fba, got an error about not enough monitor samples and it needing at least 4092 or something like that.

Not sure what caused it. Dungeons and dragons and AvP seemed to load and run fine

I think someone in the other thread said there was a memory restriction that prevented bigger cps2 games loading.

Do you need a bios for PCSX Rearmed? I can run Azure Dreams without it but will having one help the performance? Only running @ 12 FPS .. every PSX game I am running is below 15FPS..

Yeah, i'd rather the E-Shop be filled with every SNES game ever made including JP-only games that can be translated. (Even though the new release of Super Butoden 2 seems to have been hacked to replace the music....but not translate the game. Pour Quoi!)

But I can only dream, such is the way of the all mighty all digital future!

They did both. From dual core 268 MHz to quad core 804 MHz. Memory also got a big boost (6 MB to 10 MB on chip, 128 MB to 256 MB RAM, 1 GB to 4 GB flash). The GPU and slave CPU (ARM9) were left unchanged.
Thanks for that info! A much bigger jump than I was expecting!
Nope, the N3DS is fast, as it stands now (raw CPU power) it's faster than the Vita (804Mhz vs 444Mhz).

Not sure that's the full Vita hardware potential but that's what can be used as of now.
444mhz? Really? They down clocked it that low? Pretty insane if true.

use picodrive ? are you on 3DS or new 3DS?

you can't load bigger roms right now.
MvC works fine for me. check that you have the right (up to date) romset and that you own a new3DS ;) (which has more RAM)

yes, you need a bios scph500x I think.
won't run well right now, kernel access and new3DS helps though. (I did hit 59fps on parasite eve with unsynched sound (45-50 otherwise))
performance is half if you don't have kernel access on your new3DS (fw9.2+ and thus using .3dsx = no dynamic recompilation) performance is again half of that on 3DS.

Ugh, every time I try to load any of the games in Super Mario All-Stars, as soon as I get past the title screen, I'm unable to control the game anymore. The games don't freeze, they just stop accepting inputs.

Is this a known issue with that game or is this something that's wrong on my end?

I just wanna play SMB3 :(

It's an issue with default catsfc. Use blargsnes for this, smas runs flawlessly with that.

Buying a New 3DS because of this, but not sure if I should get the XL or regular. Opinions? Thoughts?

XL because there's a big chance you get an IPS screen which has slightly better image quality. Not much better though when looking straight on tbh but it's a nice bonus.

Non-XL: higher DPI (same resolution on a smaller screen), smaller form factor, cover plates, matte finish, SNES-style face buttons.

XL: bigger screen, a chance at the IPS panel lottery, slightly better battery life.

The non-XL is just large enough for me (I have fairly big hands), and the TN panel isn't a deal breaker (because it isn't a bad TN panel). I've seen an IPS XL in person, and it does look nicer (as is to be expected). But, as I said, you need some luck since not all XL units have these screen panels. Thank Nintendo's shitty quality standards for that one.

How do I run picodrive for Sega cd games? Do I just need the bios?
I've been using Genesis plus but my Sega Cd games run slow. I'm on a new 3DS.
