PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

PS2 can do component out compared to PS's S-video limit.

PS games look amazing on the PS2. I haven't any trouble outside of Grandia, personally.

PS1 has native RGB, as does the PS2. Not always a good option for the US, and getting nice cables can be a dick, but there isn't really a "S-video limit".

Yeah, good call. Living in the US, I tend to forget that option, even with my RGB setup.

Does the PSOne still output RGB? That's what I'm currently using.

Every model does, AFAIK. You'll want a sync-on-luma cable, if you decide to go RGB. CSync isn't an option without some sort of mod, and sync-on-composite gives checkerboards on like 99% of setups.

All I have are component cables, anyway I'll stick to PS2 then. Time for a MGS1 replay B) haven't run through it since like 2004!

Hooked up my PS2 in my friend's dorm and brought over Timesplitters 2 and Battlefront 2. Timeless multiplayer games. I've also got Silent Hill 2 & 3, ZoE 2, and some fighting games sitting over in my room for when I bring down my own TV. What a great system, should probably buy some titles before they skyrocket in prices (like certain titles already have)

My PS2 won't play PS1 games anymore :(

I assume that means it won't play PS2 games on CDs rather than DVDs as well but I haven't tested it.

Would I just need to open it up and clean or replace something?

Sounds like a laser cleaning problem. I had a similar experience when my PS2 did not play the larger dual layer DVDs, like GT4 arrived on. Cleaning the laser helped!

Playing Fatal Frame for my podcast and I just want to get something straight:

Did this game just expect me to put in a number code using Chinese numbers on a wheel that goes counter-clockwise with no translation whatsoever?

Funny thing is I played the Xbox version first and it had a scrap of paper translating the characters and had changed the numbers to go clockwise as well as translating them on the puzzle screen.

That's crazy about the PS2 original, though. Did they really expect people to know that? Is that scrap of paper in here somewhere and I missed it? Want to make sure before I say anything.

So I randomly went into a local used game store over lunch today. I guess some guy owned Champions of Norrath 1 & 2, found a double DVD case to store them in, and then traded them both in like that as 1 game. He even cut the cover of Return to Arms so the front of the case has the original cover and the back has the Return to Arms cover. The store did not split them up and sold it like that for $18.

Pretty excited to get both of those for so cheap, especially considering Return to Arms seems to be worth almost double that by itself. I really like Dark Alliance and always wanted to try these.

Nice pickup. I liked BGDA, so I'd love to try these.

I beat the game back when it was released; it's hardly unplayable.

Really the hardest thing is being able to call out left or right arm/leg on a monster facing you in the heat of the moment, remembering that they're reversed from your perspective.

Oh, and sometimes she'd use a heal when I didn't say anything about healing.

It's probably cheap and was fun enough for what it was. I'd give it a sexy pose/10.

Interesting. You might want to try Enter The Matrix for comparison of how they hold up. I should maybe do the same, especially since as I mentioned in that thread, I quite enjoyed them back in the day.

Ι'll try it sometime later but i'm pretty sure that Enter the Matrix holds up pretty well too. If you can get past the more outdated graphics, story and gameplay-wise it will be still enjoyable.. i guess.

The OP here is phenomenal but I wanted to share this list with you all since it has to be the biggest, most comprehensive PS2 list I have seen:

http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/File:PS2_Games-min_(2).jpg

Click on the image linked for the huge version. Its over 4MB and very huge so can't show it here! Very cool resource.

MMMmhhmmmmhhmm... so much win in that pic.

I own most of those games but I like how they split them up into genera even if some of them stick out like sore thumbs where they're placed. What I don't like is how they separated multiplatform titles, if I'm interested in a game I'm probably going to get it on PS2 regardless.

Also, can anyone identify these games from that list for me?

15 year later, this is still one of the dopest action games of all time. It also had the better pacing of all the DMC games imho. Back when Capcom was the No.1 JP developer.

the first one's still my fave

1st is Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princesse.

2nd is CHaos Field New Order (had to squint a bit before realizing the name is not in Japanese...)

3rd is Trizeal.

fourth is Radirgy Precious

The last one is Radirgy Precious.

There was also a GameCube version that got released here as Radio Allergy as part of "Ultimate Shooting Collection" on the Wii. I think the PS2 version is considered to be better (each version had exclusive content).

What do I need to know? I have an unplayed physical copy of Grandia, but have never owned a PS1. I just have a PS2 and PS3. Is it just better to run it on the PS3?

Yeah. I get that combo masters love DMC3SE, but the actual pacing, enemy encounter design, and level design was really poor.

Great combo system, though!

I noticed that image doesn't have No One Lives Forever. Maybe the PS2 port of that sucked but I figure it would still classify as "notable".

It was good, but it shows its age more than most PS2 FPS games, I played through it a few years ago. A lot of reviewers held it against the PC version and said the PS2 version wasn't fair because you couldn't save anywhere and it was too hard. I liked the game though and thought it was challenging but not unfairly so. So yeah, it should be in there.

This picture baffles me. Why make a big, difficult to read, overall impractical picture when you could have made a web page with written titles, hyperlinks to more content like a description, ingame screenshots, etc?

To post it in a single post on 4chan. Most boards have people doing such image lists (although usually they have titles somewhere). Also, they have a list like that (although a bit different) on the same wiki: http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Playstation_2

No manual save is a bad thing since the superior PC version was designed around it due to how lengthy the missions were.

Is the PAL version of Haunting Ground censored? I never imported a PAL game before and was curious if censorship is a huge deal in PAL regions.

I don't know of a good English language resource for this, but there are no cuts according to OGDB.eu. The site doesn't have an English version (still), but it's easy to figure out anyway. Here's the search result for Haunting Ground:
http://ogdb.eu/index.php?section=simplesearchresults&searchstring=haunting+ground&how=AND

Click through to whatever version you're buying, let's say the German one (Deutschland, obviously) and look for the "Zensiert" entry. If it says "nein", you can't probably tell what that means. Titles with cuts will show a little scissor symbol in the search results, too, so you only need to click through to see what was cut exactly, but it won't help you much unless you know German or Google translate happens to do a good enough job. (Schnittberichte.com is a better resource to see what was cut exactly, since they have comparison images.)

OGDB also lists the language options under "Sprachausgabe" for audio and "Textsprache im Spiel" for, you guessed it, text. I can't think of any PAL games worth playing that don't have English language options, but it's something to keep in mind anyway.

---

Generally, gore is the main reason for cuts. Decapitations, ragdolls (yup), blood fountains. Basically anything that could be seen as gratuitous violence against humans beings (including zombies) is a no-no. BUT, only in Germany. You should be fine if you buy UK or even even German language versions meant for Austria and Switzerland. The rules are applied unevenly though, so you should always check. Shadow of Rome for instance was uncut even in Germany, which still blows my mind, since that game contains the very definition of the kind of violence the BPjM screens for. Things have relaxed somewhat, but the rules are applied as unevenly as ever.

Thank you very much for the useful info. Haunting Ground is one of those stupid expensive games that really has no reason costing so much here in the US. So I decided to hunt down a PAL copy instead. I'll have to bookmark those sites in case I decide to hunt down more PAL titles. This particular version will be shipped Royal Post so I'm taking a guess that it will be the UK version. It says PAL and Pegi 16+. Unless I get thrown for a loop. =D Another plus I found out is that it supports PAL60 so my CRT will work. Thanks again for the useful info.
