Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

Scores look really good so far. This was one of the few preorders I did this year, so I was going to play it for myself anyway... but still good to hear lots of praise.

Incoming fallout from high scores predicted.

Came for the meltdowns, was not disappointed. Happy Fallout Day, regardless of whatever the reviews are!

It's a Bathesda Fallout game.

Anyone who has played Fallout 3 knows exactly what to expect.

I'll wait for the superior Obsidian sequel.

Destuctoid's review is positive, just like it's review of Tomb Raider and Halo 5. They're just using a scale that gets them clicks now. It's a little brilliant, and little douchey.

TIME: 7/10

Despite that, I can’t shake the feeling I’m really playing Fallout 3 season two. I guess it’s time to acknowledge the elephant in the room: CD Projekt Red’s masterful The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt this spring completely reset my expectation levels for storytelling, voice acting, pacing and congruous world design.

There’s nothing Fallout 4 does worse than Fallout 3, that much you can depend on.

Just glad that we now have a truly great next-gen, open world WRPG with which to wash away the bitter taste of Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3.

I hear ya. DA:I and W3 weren't bad but they left me wanting. Been itching for a new open world RPG from Bethesda for a while now.

I have to play it for myself of course, but can I say how happy this makes me after enduring weeks of assholes on here shitting on Fallout and Bethesda every opportunity they got. It's really just pathetic.

I remember in the embargo thread I was getting destroyed because I was advising people to be careful of Fallout 4, citing the PS3 release of Bethesda games last generation.

That 0 FPS on Xbox One, and technical problems still get swept under the rug by mainstream outlets.

Jolly good to hear.

Why does the geek in me now want to play this with a gamecube controller?

Cause the wavebird is COAT.

I know it's weird to be in that position where you're not trusting all the positive reviews. I'm not one of those mad people that think there's some conspiracy, it's just the few (slightly more) negative ones confirm all my fears and yet most reviewers don't seem concerned by those issues at all. Which is fair enough, but I guess I just wanted something slightly different to most reviewers.

I'm glad this reviewed well. I don't mind playing games with technical issues as long as the game itself is fun and it works well enough. But I'm also the kind of guy who liked playing The Evil Within so..

I prefer the reviews without a score and am more eager to read those. Like the one from RPS has a lot of positives but also says it's held back by the same lightweight Bethesda combat.

Well, I'm glad that the game is reviewing well, but I just can't get into another Bethesda game at launch. Not sure if I'll wait for a sale or not, but I'll definitely wait for some patches at least. I really wish Bethesda would update their damn engine already. I love their games, but I just can't stand the bugs.

Given that I loved Skyrim and Fallout 3 though, at least I've have a blast with this when I get it.

Well from what I've read and watched this is looking to be exactly like FA3, which I guess is good or bad depending on the person.

Ahahahahaha... good one.

In any case, its no surprise that it got high scores. Its Bethesda. Their brand matters more to their consumers than the quality of their games.

A lot of people here seem to have trouble with the concept, but most people who play these games (IE not diehard CRPG fans comparing it to something like Serpent in the Staglands) seem to be more than happy with the quality unless it gets to the level of PS3 Skyrim.

Bethesda games have long sales tails, even on consoles where you can't just attribute it to mods.

7.5 is a positive score. A 5 on Destructoid actually indicates an average score, so 7.5 is definitely good, above average but not outstanding

How is that douchey? How is it click-bait?

If anything, it's other sites that should use the full breadth of rankings

I got the game already. There's a fair amount of those, and they're color coded by difficulty in the dialogue wheel from yellow to red.

Do they replace one of the four options, or is there ever a time you can kind of flip over to another set of 4 that has these skill based dialogue choices?

Yeah that is crazy. Bsiggs had it for a while and it sounded like he had a pretty good experience as well.

Well even back in the day with the 360 and ps3 there were a couple titles that you could put side to side on the same system and sometimes see small differences but now, and maybe this is their closeness to being PC products, not sure. But now we are seeing noticeable differences. Sometimes its the harddrive, but its not ALWAYS the harddrive.

I do find it funny though, that the way the averages are playing out on Metacritic, the Xbox One version is currently the highest (at 91) and the PC version is the lowest (at 89) with the PS4 version in the middle (at 90).

Lots of high scores but based on those same reviews. it doesn't seem like something I feel like sitting through. I'll pass up for a discount price. It can wait.

Jeez that's quite a narrative there. Would you like more salt with your salt?

I'm salty becaue I have a different opinion?
People like their games.
Suuure.

A lot of people here seem to have trouble with the concept, but most people who play these games (IE not diehard CRPG fans comparing it to something like Serpent in the Staglands) seem to be more than happy with the quality unless it gets to the level of PS3 Skyrim.

Fair enough, I guess.

reviews need to be clearer on what platform it was played on, any outlet not pointing out those stuttering and 0 fps issues when reviewing the XB1 version should be ignored from here on out, its not something you can just gloss over

Not really. 7,5 translates to a yellow score on Meta - I´m not sure if that´s where they want to be.

This is why I think 5 point scale is perfect.

5 & 4 = Green
3 = Yellow
2 & 1 = Red

I do find it funny though, that the way the averages are playing out on Metacritic, the Xbox One version is currently the highest (at 91) and the PC version is the lowest (at 89) with the PS4 version in the middle (at 90).

The PS4 version has the most reviews so that's the one we'll use in our silly little Metacritic arguements that are bound to crop up sooner or later.

I don't honestly believe people were expecting bad reviews for this. It's a Bethesda game. Every last one of their flagship RPGs in recent years has been a cobbled-together repetitive jankfest with no soul and they all hover around the 90 mark on Metacritic.

Why would this be different?

Skyrim was an amazing game.
The side missions are the most engaging and well crafted that I've seen in an open world game yet, the world was beautiful.
So the scores were not underserved for me.

About Fallout 4, I certainly feel some people were hating on it before having a chance at playing it, just because the technical side of the game didn't live up to their expectations.
Ok I can see that the game is not setting any new standard for graphics and it has frame drops in certain instances but a game in this genre is much more than that.

Jim Sterling and Pete Hines obviously have the of Sony discussed better version of the PS4. So of course they have NO frame rate drops at all.

You and other people showed that it was area specific so it's possible he never ran into them or they didn't bother him at all.

There is a DF performance test, check it out. Frame rate problems are apparent, not just in interiors or where I was yesterday. Although the interior fps is terrible while the other frame drops are not soooo terrible, but not good either.
