Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Did it measure 23ms at 4K on the 3500 evolution box then? It's a bit worrying if the evolution kits can't match the One Connect box for features and power.

evolution kit = One Connect box. People use the expression intermixed, but technically it's "One Connect" that's correct.

I didn't notice any with Yoshi's Woolly World either. Or any Wii-U platformers. That's the odd thing - those seem to play virtually perfect.

It's shooters that control funny to me. Halo 5 just feels way floatier. BO3 too. Even Destiny did, to be honest.

I'm losing far too much sleep over this than I'd like. Ideally I'd love to just get both, try them for a week, and then decide.

Ah ok, it was probably my imagination, I thought they looked a bit different.
Weird that it's not measuring 23ms on 1080p mode. Does it feel like 80 odd ms to you then when playing? That's crazy if it really is.

Talking about curved TVs some pages back...
I went to a store last week to check out TVs, for pleasure mostly, I dont have money to buy any.

I stared at a 65'' curved 4k TV for a long while, and when I got back to look at a flat it just felt... not so right. I dont know, it's not much of a deal but I think curved TVs feels better to look at, at least on big screens.

On small screens it doesnt make any difference, but on big ones it even helps immersion since the display fits better to your field of view.

It may have come too soon, but I think it will be great when 4K is established.

I had been itching to get a new TV since this past summer and had spent an ungodly amount of time researching what to get. I am a big gamer, but also really watch a ton of TV and movies, so the black levels were super important to me. My last TV was a 55" Samsung and it worked well for games, but it was approaching four years old and back then there wasn't much for testing lag, although I believe I found a site listing it as 48ms or something like that. Anyway, I never noticed any lag personally, although the only FPS I play regularly has been Destiny - and I played a LOT of Destiny over the past year with no problems.

Fast forward to October and I finally had my 2 TVs narrowed down to the Samsung JS9000 55" and the LG OLED EF9500. At the time, the Samsung was $500 cheaper ($2499 vs $3000), but the LG had a steeper discount (from $4999). Still, I was super apprehensive about the OLED because of the input lag and was worried that I'd notice it. So, I pulled the trigger and got the JS9000 as the JS9500 was out of my price range.

After setting up the JS9000 I was pretty pleased. The gaming side of things worked fantastic and the colors seemed a richer, with much better black levels than my previous Samsung TV. Still, my old TV looked pretty good, and this one, while better, didn't really make me feel like it was a huge upgrade. My enjoyment lasted about 2 days, then I booted up my Wii U. I pressed the Home button and went to the eShop and as the screen went to complete white, I noticed on the left and right sides of the screen there were these 2 pinkish bars from top to bottom. They were very noticeable and once I saw them, I couldn't unsee them - even when playing other games that didn't have pure white backgrounds.

I regrettably called Best Buy to initiate a return. They were super nice and agreed to do an exchange. The LG was still on sale, and I decided to upgrade for $500 more and give it a try. I was very nervous, but hopeful that it would work for me in gaming, and that it wouldn't have any noticeable defects. I had already went through a bad panel with the Samsung.

Best Buy brought the LG this past Tuesday and I hooked it up and immediately was floored. I couldn't believe how amazing the picture looked. The pure blacks are simply beautiful. Even without tweaking a single setting I was getting very accurate skin tones and colors. I had heard that the passive 3D was good, so I threw in Avatar Blu-Ray 3D and put on the glasses. WOW. The 3D effects were the best I have ever seen. So clear, so vibrant, and so awesome. I was in love. But, the big test was playing games. I turned on the Wii U and checked the white screen. Phew, looked perfectly white, no discoloration anywhere. Then I put in Yoshi's Woolly World, and the colors just popped. So nice looking. I adjusted the Game Mode's colors a little bit to make me happy. I played a whole level and didn't detect any lag - at least that I could perceive. I was able to easily navigate the level and everything seemed spot-on.

I then threw in Destiny for the ultimate test. I figured this would make or break the TV for me. I went down to the Cosmodrome to explore a bit and it controlled fantastic. I was popping head shots left and right and jumping around with ease. I still didn't detect anything as being off. Now, this could be due to the fact that I had gamed on a TV for the past 4 years that probably wasn't the best in the lag department, so maybe this LG TV is similar and I'm used to it. But I have had a few others play on the screen and they haven't noticed a problem either.

I'm so relieved! The TV is spectacular and every single time I turn it on and begin watching TV or playing a game I'm taken aback by the beautiful picture. I'm over the moon with it and couldn't be happier. I messed around with some 4K YouTube stuff and it looked fantastic as well.

I completely understand the hesitation people have in getting one of these TVs as I obsessed over this decision for months. I got lost in the AVS Forums and here reading everything I could on TV sets - and I'm just happy I finally own one that has exceeded my expectations. The LG really feels like a step up, and pretty much everyone I've shown it to is impressed. If you're on the fence and can afford one, I highly suggest trying it out. Get one from Best Buy and keep the box and stuff incase you want to exchange it for something else.
I had a JS9000 and switched to the EF9500 and completely agree with everything you say. Although I had a pink tint on my JS9000 and yellow tinting on my EF9500 but I can rarely see the latter.

Man, the JS series not getting a lot of love lol.

I thought they both looked pretty good, on the Best Buy floor. Even compared to the OLED.

The difference between the JS and EF in a home environment is night and day. I had them both side by side for a couple of days before the JS was collected.

The OLED is incredible, the depth of the picture, viewing angles, blacks, motion, colour.

I wouldn't really know, my 45 year old reflexes aren't what they used to be. I'll survive, but it's probably not good for my BF4 game play.

I'm considering buying the Sony KDL50W800C; I see some people here have experience with it. How's the input lag for gaming? I've read a few reviews, most notably Rtings, but I'd like to hear from someone here.

I want to know the same though I plan on buying the 43" tomorrow.

Well you aren't going to beat the OLED as far as picture goes, that clear and undebatable. It's not going to happen. But there's more to the TV than that. When I had my EC9300 I spent a good amount of time switching between that and my Vizio M, because I was getting some hardcore image retention on the OLED with constant Halo play. No campaign I couldn't tell much difference as far as input lag goes. In MP it was night and day. I got destroyed in swat, no head shots with the sniper rifle, etc. There's no getting around how floaty it is. The lag is real and it does effect gameplay. If you can live with it, great, but it's there

It's been a monthlong debate with my wife over what to get now. We got spoiled by the OLED, but in the end she said that I spent 75% of my time gaming on the TV and probably about the same percentage of my free time. So that is priority 1. Also, the JS9000 looks pretty damn good. Sure sitting two feet apart in the magnolia room, it's damn apparent the OLED is better, but focusing on the Samsung shows it's got a great picture too.

So with gaming as the focus, and how's great movies look being #2, I just think the JS9000 is the better option. 65", 4K, HDR, Upgradability, Input Lag.

I also don't want to run the risk that a future firmware update makes the OLED more unplayable.

I spent so much time gaming too. I hardly ever even watch movies on the thing. I should never get an OLED with the kind of use my TV gets either. Not until they get that input lag down. Hate to say that because I've been wanting one of these for months.

Yea it sucks. They should be able to get that figured out by now. I hate that spending 3-5k has to include so much compromise.

Why did you feel the lag on the OLED in multiplayer but not in single player? Does multiplayer add more lag to the controls anyway (before factoring in TV lag on top) due to ping etc? Sorry if this is a stupid question :)

Well it may be because there's less need to be fast and precise. It still felt a little floaty, but multiplayer, especially Halo, is getting all five shots on target before your opponent, so it's easier to feel that lag. At least for me. You can definitely fee it, maybe I'm doing a poor job at explaining it

Edit: iPhone autocorrect is trash

Its probably because Multiplayer is more competitive and requires quicker reflexes.

Got to agree with all of this. I was between the 65" LG EG9600, Samsung 78"9500 and Sony 75" x940c. In the end OLED god axed due to size (you cant make up for size with PQ, especially at this level of quality) and IR, which was apparent on every single test I did on the screen (livable and manageable, but worse than I experienced on late gen plasmas. OLED still has a bit further to travel). The Samsung 9500 was a beautiful screen but the curve pissed me off, and the blooming from its FALD was a bit strong. The Sony x940c has a MUCH better FALD system when dealing with content (yet it has less zones, go figure, just means better software for now), barely any blooming but maintained perfect black in a pitch dark room where it was suppose to be (Pairs demo was instrumental in this), but those speakers bugged me (and still do a bit, but honestly at night you dont even notice them). In the end took the Sony home for just udner $6k plus free install and mounting, which was an insane deal given that the 9500 would have cost me 10k.

One thing people need to realize about LCD's, if you pay enough for them they can look insanely good. I'd take the x940c over any plasma ever released, its that good. The motion handling with BFI is crystal clear and the screen has so much spare head room when it comes to brightness you can crank it all the way up and still be brighter than you need.

I'd get the x940c or Samsung 9500 but sadly 65" is the maximum size I'm going to be able to get up here. They definitely look great too.

Did you look at my video in the previous page?

Ah i had not noticed the video there. I just watched it...well damn, none of it no. I sent you a PM.

Never noticed any banding in GTA V or TW3, although I played on PC. Try resetting your settings back to default?

Yeah i think i am going to reset to factory defaults for this. I think i'll change the Xbox One;s colour space to standard(TV) again too, but i doubt that is causing it.

Well you have to deal with their curve on those first off, then edge lighting issue showing its head in time or out of the box on the 9000, playing a similar panel lottery here. The JS9500 has severe bloom and halo issues at times, especially during specific types of scenes that happen in movies at times, and very frequently during gaming. Then you have the jutter issues in movies that's even worse than the oleds. They have fantastic input lag ratings though, and still not bad tv's at all.

If I were to buy a LED it would be the Sony 940C, not nearly as noticeable issues as the Samsung's, better motion, better upconversion, and better blacks.

For the group, OLEDs have some panel issues too. Vignetting and discoloration is pretty rampant if you look at the AVSforums. Obviously the picture is better, so those flaws are over looked a bit more. My set definitely had vignetting, but I didn't really notice while watching content. My wife did tho.

Rtings rated the 9000 higher than the 9500 for some reason, but hey I'll take that, especially as I've just ordered a 9000! Fuck you 9500 and your inferior picture! Lol

Lol. I think most people are saying that they got an immaculate 9000 panel and a pretty bad 9500. That's the panel lottery, but it does speak to how good the 9000 is. I'll let you know what I think tonight. I pick mine up in a few hours.

I'll use my free 32" for MNF while I Halo 5 on the real deal.

How does a 2D platformer like Mario Maker or Yoshi look on a curved screen? It's the only thing holding me from getting an eg910 LG Oled. Any pic would be greatly appreciated.

Is the 940c the same as the X930C?

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x930c

Input lag on that is apparently worse. Than the JS9500.

Guys...i am SO happy to report the issue is gone. Look:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/z6d9mx3ggyflmnv/20151109_195124.mp4?dl=0

I resetted to the inital settings and thus it's on the ECO mode now, did not change a thing except set brightness at 45, because i just LOVE the dark nights in GTA V and Witcher 3 thanks to that setting.

I just don't understand which setting was the culprit though, because colour gamut is standard and i had that yesterday too and the sharpness is even 25 on ECO compared to 15 on what i had yesterday. Black level is at high and gamma at high. I'd love to find out which setting was causing this...at first i thought it was the custom white balance settings...but nope.

EDIT

Ok.....nevermind. It's back. The night sky now looks different and the weird effect is back......too fucking weird.

No they are not the same, the 930 is edge lit and the 940 is FALD, which I imagine means a different image processor (or modified version of their X1 processor to suppor the FALD system). In game mode (with reality creation turned off) I've had not issue with input lag. I run the screen as a monitor and so far have had no issues with any twitch gaming (doesn't mean others would not).

One area the 940c is terrible at is UI. Android sucks, badly. Buggy and slow as shit.

Still, I'll be waiting for CES 2016 before I buy anything. We're so close now and I can't be buying a new TV anytime soon after this one. So whichever comes out best next year is probably my next one.

Yeah, but new TVs probably won't be coming out until when, April/May? That's 6-7 months from now. I can't go without a TV until then.

Fair enough. My 46" Panasonic still going strong, so I can wait.
I wish I had room for a 75", I'd gladly get the x940c too. But it won't fit.

SOMEWHERE
VIZIO IS WATCHING

http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/11/own-a-vizio-smart-tv-its-watching-you/

I buy TVs above the Vizio price bracket anyways, but if anyone was planning on buying one, you might want to think twice.

Thanks, I've just disabled the feature on the M60-C3 here at work. It's a good thing I have always bought "TVs above the Vizio price bracket" to use at home. Then again, once the Vizio R Series 65" and 120" are released at $6K and $130K MSRP, respectively, I might want to consider buying TVs based on quality, not price.

The colour banding or whatever it is, is not caused by the EC9300.

I tried another screen, a simple 22 inch monitor. It shows the exact same kind of weird effect, exactly the same. So that explains why it first looked proper today on the OLED and a little later not anymore.

It's the game. I also tried putting the Xbox One's colour space to standard again, didn't help a thing.

Best Buy has begun their extended holiday return policy. Gonna give the JS9500 a shot. Should be here Saturday.

Well, here goes nothing...

This pic is of the FALD JS9500 on the left and the 2014 flagship edge-lit HU9000 on the right. The JS9000 will look pretty much the same as the HU9000 when it comes to black levels. You can see some of the blooming between the lettering on the JS9500 but it's still vastly superior to any edge-lit LCD.

This is where I'm at right now. If 3D gets dropped from the 2016 models that interest me then I'll be going with a 2015 at probably a lower price.

The X930C and X940C have the same processing but the 940 is 75" with FALD while the 930 is 65" and edge-lit. HDR performance should be much better on the 940 due to FALD.

I believe the JS9500 is the first Samsung to offer FALD on a mass market TV while Sony has been at it for years. It shows with both of these offerings. I like the 940 and would love an extra 10 inches of screen but the side speakers make it physically too large for my space.

I just picked up the JS9000, first impressions are great. Really really great. I'll get back with you on more detailed impressions soon. I'm pretty sure I got a rtings-like panel. No light bleed, great uniformity. Super impressed so far.

What Vizio model is this? Never seen it before. $700 for a 58 inch 4k thats pretty damn good. Can't find any reviews on it. I wonder if its comparable to the M series. Anyone with any knowledge want to chime in?

The new D series. It's their entry level models but not out yet. Just started popping up on retail sites in the last week or so. Fewer zones than the M series.

Who isnt trying to watch me!? Ugh haha

Also
you stealth bragging? ;)

Hardly, there are people in this thread rocking setups which make mine look quite plebe by comparison. I got my 4K TV as a closeout even, that guy who bought the 75" Sony X940C? That's a TV which cost multiples of what mine cost.

Does anyone own this Sony set? (XBR55X810C)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0148OZLOS/?tag=neogaf0e-20

i've been using Rtings to look for something to replace my 5-year old 50" Viera.

things important to me:
-PQ
-55" or bigger
-Not curved
-120Hz (or higher) refresh rate
-Low lag; good for gaming
-$1500 is about as much as I want to spend

this set seems to lack a lot of fancier features (3D, local dimming, HDR) that other sets have, but i'm not too concerned about those. i use my set for basically two things: gaming and streaming movies/TV. it's about 70/30 between those two things, so a solid TV with good PQ and low lag is the thing for me.

any input/feedback is very appreciated!

Oh my damn! We've got another 9500 destroyer on our hands! 😜

Just a side impression: the 65" and 4K are already making a big difference for us over the OLED. We watch "The Office" like it's going out of style and it looks great up scaled to 4K :)

Glad you're enjoying your set and got a good one.

I assume you had a ec9300 before and not a 9500/9600 oled?
