Digital Foundry vs Xenoblade Chronicles X: "A Wii U Technological Master Class?"

Bit of a shame they didn't (play enough of the game to be able to) go into a skell to really test the performance and loading when flying high up in the sky, or move superfast in the driving mode. I've seen footage of flying up high and it looks awesome, but it'd be interesting to see that put to the test with their seamless loading.
I know! I really tried but, man, the game is looooong. I can't wait to get ahold of a Skell.

As for the rest of the video, I sorta figured the pop-in would be bad for a game like this with minimal loading although the car collision is sort of a head scratcher
It probably wouldn't be fun running around New Los Angeles and anytime you happened to be in front of a car and it hit you it'd slingshot you forward 200 feet.

I dunno, are you trying to tell me that doesn't sound fun? ;-) Brings me back to Motocross Madness when you reach the edge of the map.

I don't know, with proper (read: hilarious) ragdoll physics, I could spend hours just looking for cars to hit me

But you will still run into it especially using a huge skell. So now you have to be dodging cars that just stopped.

Or rather the skell should be slingshotting cars 200 ft :)

I think putting a physics system like that in the game would tank the framerate though.

Pop-in? Ghost cars? I wonder when people will be screaming about Nintendo being given a free pass. Considering the alternatives (and this being a big problem only in New LA) I don't think it can helped.

Free bonus game. New LA Simulator.

I think it's fine either way, but I prefer that one. How do you say xenophobic or xenomorph?
I don't think that is the word they are thinking of but rather Xena: Warrior Princess (which is pronounced zeena).

It is interesting as both Xena and Xenophobe come from the word Xenos anyway.

However, maybe I'm not the best person for this since Shin Megami Tensei I always hear people say Meg-are-me (the r is usually a bit quiet in that pronunciation) when I say Meg-amie.

Maybe some people do the whole zed vs zee thing and take it xe words as well.

I also think so too.

Yes the Wii U is not up there with the PS4 and X1 but this game still looks amazing and so much work was put into it and yes shortcuts needed to be taken but the team chose what was important and made sure it worked flawlessly, FPS for example.

I have no clue what Ninjablade's obsession is with this game. He has been shitting on it for over a year now? That is some dedication.

The lack of collision on cars most likely has to do with skells, they could either have it more realistic and have the skells crush or knock and destroy the cars out the way but that could effect the rating and it's just not that kind of game where there are no consequences for doing anything harmful to the last survivors of humanity, or if could have you get stopped constantly by cars pulling in front of you

Pretty sure it's been since the 2013 reveal.

Zenno

That's the correct pronunciation: "zennoblade"

Unless the game's actual creators say otherwise. That's the word root and that's how it's pronounced.

It's kinda BS because it's stealing Z's job. Yeah it makes the word looks nicer but still

I think it's more the interaction of cars with the Skells than people that caused complications. You couldn't very well have the mighty Skells being knocked about by cars yet you couldn't really have a car blow up either when a Skell stomped on one. Humanity is on the verge of extinction here and everyone matters. I'm sure letting the cars pass through was a considered decision. It's not like it's possible to miss that.

EDIT: beaten by foxuzamaki. That's what I think too.

When I was playing the import, the texture and object pop-in was easily the most distracting thing about the engine. I was a little surprised so few reviews talked about it. It is aggressively bad. Geography draw distance on the other hand is legit breath-taking.

Edit: Love the variance in pronunciations. Zennoblade is the new Droivecloob

It would be hilarious but yeah, after a point it'd probably get annoying.

It could just stop.
As Fox said then they'd probably need to come up with something to deal with Skells being able to walk on cars, and then there'd either be an annoying penalty system for destruction of property or you'd just wonder why these cars are indestructible. Not that no collision on them isn't distracting either, but still. There could be any multitude of reasons why it is the way it is, but it's probably too late to change it at this point.

So, kind of like invisible NPCs in Zelda, right?

Damn, this game looks way better than Tales of Zestiria on PS4 or PC, makes me little jealous..

Well to be fair, Zestiria i made with a far less budget and talent(no disrespect to tales team), and is a direct PS3 port, so when your bringing that up against a fully funded team like Monolith for a first party title who have a big history of pushing tech, its not really all that fair

ill be honest the game's graphics looked extremely dated when i first saw them, i mentioned that it didn't really look better then last gen on another board, and i was flamed, even though i explained the graphical shortcomings in it. anyway i admit i was wrong the game is impressive for wiiu hardware technically, after reading the article, even though i still feel lastgen open worlds look better, the game does have impressive tech, maybe not that far behind overall, maybe even on par, with the games i feel look better, it's really hard to judge, i guess.

I think there is a lack of collision detection on many things because when you are walking/driving around with a skell, you want to move fast without getting stuck on things. It's no GTA where you want to crash and destroy everything. Surely it's partly also for the performance, I'm guessing it was just the easiest solution.

But from my understanding this doesn't happen only when you are walking/driving around with a Skell but also when you are walking as your character.I wonder how often this happens.Maybe i'll get used to it when i play the game but in paper it sounds bizarre.

For having "tech analysis" in the video title, there sure was a lack of it.

Game looks good, though.

*edit* read the article. There's a bit more tech talk in there.

The lack of collision detection in the city and the pop ins are quite jarring :S

Like clockwork...

please go look at the direct feed pics from, red dead, and GTAV on 360 and compare them to X, the graphics are obviously better in the lastgen, no need for silly pics. x shines in the performance department though and scale, but also has a ton of pop in and lack of dynamic shadows.

lulz

Blame the Greeks. It's their word.

Xeno can also be pronounced "Zeeno" if you will (\ˌzen-ə-ˈfō-bē-ə, ˌzēn-\). I'll be honest, I've never even considered any form of xeno as being pronounced with anything but a hard e so this was surprising to me that anyone pronounced it as anything but "Zeenoblade".

You're right. Apparently the Greeks pronounce it with a long e, as zeeno.

Unfortunately solid performance doesn't translate at all to screenshots. :(

Are people really looking at screenshots anymore to decide if they want to buy something? Low bitrate youtube videos featuring annoying people yapping are where it is at now.

Are we still comparing GTA V to Xeno X? The difference in budget is probably the same as comparing Super Mario Galaxy and Super Meat Boy...

How about you learn grammar, or English for that matter? The drivel you type makes you look 10 years old (unless you really are 10, then sorry), and your poor grammar makes you look about 8. Everyone else on the forum can type actual sentences, so why can't you?

Calling out grammar on a message board as a counterpoint makes you look 16.
