Digital Foundry vs Xenoblade Chronicles X: "A Wii U Technological Master Class?"

I never said the game is ugly, i think its looks good, nice art style, its just its missing some important things to me graphically, and i feel red dead and GTAV look better graphically, is that so bad?

RDR does not have even close to the scale, enviroment variety, intricate lanscapes, amount of enemies and characters on screen, has far more loading, etc. The only thing RDR has really is the dynamic lightning and that is the basis of your whole argument. The dynamic lighting.

Regarding the zeno/zeeno thing: Isn't it largely shown to where you're from? As a Brit, I'd only heard 'zennophobia', 'zennomorph', 'zennogears' etc. growing up, but now when I hear people in North America speak, I hear them say 'zeeno____'.

A bit like 'Nez' and 'en ee ess'.

That's exactly how I feel about this. As a Brit who stands by Zenno, I've only heard Zeeno by those from the states. I've got nothing to back this up, but opting for a long vowel sound instead of a short vowel sound has struck me as a North American thing in general.

More on topic. Fuckin' hyped for this game!

RDR runs at "This entails a full 720p resolution on Xbox 360 along with 2x multi-sampling anti-aliasing. PlayStation 3 on the other hand renders at a significantly lower resolution: 1152x640, with a very selective implementation of the blur-inducing quincunx anti-aliasing." http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-red-dead-redemption-face-off

Am i missing something? You were championing that RDR looks leaps and bounds better than X.

On ps3 red dead looks bad imo, just compare the 360/ps3 version in pics, it has that blurry on screen that destroys image quality, kind if the samething going on in X, BASED ON THE DIRECT FEED PICS.

All I see are small rock and everything is brown with some bigger rocks that are basic in structure.

nice i didn't know X runs at 1080p with great AA, a few of those pics are straight up bull shots, RDR actually actually has very good AA for a 360 game, while the AA in X is low standard even by lastgen standard,a none bullshot of x will HAVE a blurry low res look to it, like the DF pics.
Dude are you sure that you are not using a braille keyboard? RDR looks really good (I love that game), but XCX has a lot more happening on the screen, has better performance also is a lot bigger and looks better (IMAO)...

It's like they're saying big open world games comparable with Xenoblade on Xbox One and PS4 somehow have a constant framerate.

Well, stopped a while ago to care about DF articles.

That's how I read it too. I know the Wii U is weaker than the PS4 and XB1 but to suggest its a "last gen system" when the current consoles struggle with performance in almost every game (especially open world titles) is just silly. Either way it once again shows how lowering the resolution can still deliver a beautiful game that runs great. I'm all for eye-candy but not at the expense of a game that "targets 30fps" as this gen is going to be known for.

dude it has much better AA on 360 then X, it has tons of alpha textures everywhere, dynamic shadows, much better character models, and textures.

Why do we have ignore lists around here if every second post there is a quote from him? Really, he never admits he is wrong or blind or both, so the discussion is pointless with someone like him. What more proof do you want beside the fact that he is using as an example a game that is objectively less ambitious and worse in terms of the balance between graphics and performance?

Where do you see this discussion going forward? Stop quoting him. It's a pity for the nice write-up from dark to polute this thread with ninjablind.

All I know is the world they created looks amazingly beautiful and I love the scale. Monolith continues to impress me. Can't wait to get my hands on this and start playing.

Good assumption lol. 1080p is really unusual on Wii U. Even Captain Toad runs at 720p, and in a game like this? Hell naw.

Capitan Todd runs at 60FPS though, and has really polished visuals so it's understandable. I'm guessing bandwidth makes 1080p hard to do, and considering the processing power it's better to make something really pretty at 720p than something rough at 1080p.

And X is a lot bigger yadayada. Point is very few games on Wii U run at 1080p.

Personally I would've liked Smash to be 720p if it upped the graphics in other areas.

I love how 50% of the time this game is mentioned it's labeled Captain "Todd".

Nah, I would sacrifice 8 player for upped the graphics in other areas tho.

Honestly the only thing I see weird here is the cars simply passing through players in New LA. Would have been better if they simply came to a stop to avoid hitting players to try and make it a bit less apparent that they have no collision detection.

the game looks so bad in direct feed, he only has 5 screenshots of gameplay, really if you compared it 360/ps3 open world games in screen shots its look really bad even compared those, honestly feels he's being very nice to the game's graphics based on those screens. he should post more pics.

Some screenshots that I made a few weeks ago, none of them are from cutscenes

How fluent your English is? Reading "X" in the beginning of the word like "ks" is typical for some languages, but definitely not for English.

I'm Swedish, that may be why :p
It feels weird that people pronounces it like Zee/Ze, but others probably thinks the same of me.

I'm Russian, and I understand you. "Ksilofon", "ksenofobia", "kseroks"... that's how X is pronounced in Russian, so it's not really surprising to see people referring to Xenoblade as "Ksenoblade".

Hovewer, in past years, most people in Russia have finally started to pronounce it with [z] sound.

I applaud Monolith Soft for their effort with the scale of the world, but this very ambition was honestly a bit too much for the Wii U, and it really shows the console's shortcomings with all the cutbacks they've had to make to hit 30FPS. It looks okay is how I'd describe it, mainly because the art style is an uncanny valley-level mess. With that said, looking forward to playing it regardless.

Reading the article it says they received a digital copy of the game. I'm wondering how 1:1 the load times and such are between the digital version and the physical + data packs version, since I haven't seen it yet (only a disc with and without data packs).

I really appreciate the fact that objects "fade" into view instead of suddenly appearing in front of the player. It makes a big difference IMO. Sudden pops draw my attention, but fades I can ignore.

these actually look very nice, thanks. post some from a regular gameplay perspective showing off the more detailed part of the world.

The first two were taken in the middle of my gameplay. I like to fight with the camera up close in my skell sometimes and explore with the camera zoomed out pretty far.

I'm sure people will share some nice screens in the Wii U screenshot thread soon enough. Sadly I don't have anymore time since last week to play it, so I won't be making more screens anytime soon :p

You made me chuckle, good one xD

Aonuma *after seeing Xenoblade X*: Shit, need to step my game up.
No. Apples and oranges. Zelda won't have the scope but it will be a looker and likely have way better gameplay. Open world Zelda isn't going to be open worldy like the games that define that genre. At least that's my hunch.

I think the things that really make this game special from a graphical point of view is the beautiful art and the great design of the open world. It's not the scale of it, but what is shown within that scale, the verticality, the diversity and the accessibility of this open world.

And the driver sticking his head out the window yelling "watch where the fuck you are going, asscave!!!".

Having a seamless open world is something they can learn from X and in the Zelda presentation many times they said, "you see that mountain over there? We can go there" That was echoed everytime in X.
