Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

If that is real and I am not overly tired. They misspelled subscription.

The key question: is it a series of episodes like Xenosaga, or is it a series of episodes like the walking dead? It's not really time to panic, but I would feel pretty upset if they failed to deliver the exploratory scope of the original. On the other hand breaking it up and releasing it sooner won't bother me even if I had to pay more provided they captured some of the joy of discovery that the game offers.

I guess I'm in the minority that doesn't mind this. I don't see anything wrong in expanding it in this way especially if it lets them keep as much of the game as intact as possible. Kind of like splitting the last Harry Potter into two movies. It let them get in a lot more. Otherwise folks would have complained about omissions, as they would here if the remake left some stuff out. Can't really win either way so I'll just wait for the execution before becoming dramatic.

They wouldn't be able to do that without seriously changing the nature of the story. Which would be a huge problem in itself.
Why is that a problem? The original is still available, the PC version is out too. They should try and change it up while attempting to keep the spirit of the game true to the original. Different doesn't mean bad.

Can't really say that I blame Squenix for this. They need to milk all the good will and sales they can from folks to rebuild their reputation. Making the FF7 remake into not just a single event but a multipart series is a good way to buy them a lot of relief. Plus they got the new retooled Dissidia coming for multi title fan appeal as well as the FF15 stuff finally hitting after a decade of waiting.

Its a good solid business plan to refuel their profits as well as their reputation...so long as they do it well. So far though the action looks far better than 13 so its promising even if its not what FF7 was before. It'll be its own thing in that setting and for all intentions here's hoping its good. That said...I miss the original combat and regret not seeing it come back. Don't know how this one will be but its not what I had waited a lifetime for. I'll just have to see what it is and judge it as its own thing.

FF7 is about as linear as most JRPGs were back then. The plot advances in the same order every time, but can wander around once you get on the world map, and there's the two optional characters (both of which I suspect will become main characters).

It's not linear like say, FF13, but generally speaking, all FF games are linear at their core.

I know. But there is an option to explore the world, go back to towns/cities that you have visited, doing meaningless things, grinding monsters in deserted places. You can't do that in FFXIII.

Um, Xenoblade X? The first Xenoblade?

Add Ni no kuni

Xenoblade X doesn't even have a fucking story.

Yepp, the central narrative is really Damn weak. Can't understand that no one mentioned this...or my media lockout was actually really successful.

On topic. Yeah...well I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. They stil have a while to sell me on it though but dammit if this is more than a year long thing.

How so? Most areas besides Midgar is not that big in FF7 and most of Midgar you can't even explore. Every little house you go in is tiny. Outside of the over world the game is not that big.

They are going to have to be bigger though. You can't just make one room and two houses for some of those places now, they are going to be fuller versions of what the text described them as with other buildings and land surrounding them.

We don't even have details about what they really mean yet anyway...

Can someone explain to me why this is such a bad thing? :/

Really? Don't you think it is bad that a game won't let you progress at your own pace? Like, after finishing a segment you have to wait months to keep playing the story?

You finish a fantastic scene, and you WANT to keep playing! You are pumped up to see what's next.

But FUCK YOU! You are greeted with a black screen with white text that says "To be continued"; followed by another screen prompting you to buy the next episode or the "full season pass".

Don't you feel that's a little... TERRIBLE?

This whole game's existence seems so depressing to me, all because FF fans have lost hope in Square Enix making new games that they put their hopes in an old game.

And the same fans that have lost hope in the company to make competent ff games put their faith in the same company to recreate a previous game which somehow means it'll be as good or better then the original. It makes no sense. It just baffles me.

What about Xenoblade X? It's fucking massive....and it's on the Wii U! I think they're full of shit. Missing something here?

Unique Experiences?

SE, you are fucking morons.
Xenoblade X has one town. Its a big town, but its one town. The world is big, but it isnt as complex as having many cities and events. Not to mention the kind of detail they want to have with each model, each map, and so on.

If we all stop to think, or replay ff7, the game has an insanely large amount of scenarios. Many games today have less events and a lot more gameplay padding. You could literally cut the game into a third, add more scope to each area and more ability to explore, and you would have a fully fledged game. Each disc has a ton of content. I am not worried. Not only that, but i feel that they are going to add scenes from all the games and movie and put it all into this one game. We are talking a massive, massive game here.

I hope angry Joe makes a "fake" rant video about this. Hopefully maybe this time something good can come out of it. Since his videos get millions of views.

Honest question, does "multi-part series" mean the same as "episodic game"? I think that FFXIII can fall under "multi-part series" as well.

Putting aside concerns of going back to areas and such, I'm not sure why people think episodic will result in more cut content then one full release for $60.

That doesn't even make sense to me.

Hey man, games aren't a product, they're a service.

Hmm... spacing out the development? Would be cool for them to make like just make one game but release content episodes that added to the game instead of being individually played. Like an MMO, they already have experience with that.

I wouldn't doubt it if this was their way to convince Square to fund the project, what with LiS having been a positive experience and all.

If this remake ends up being gutted by degenerating into some fragmented dlc/episodic nightmare, I swear I will break up with Square Enix for fucking good.

You do realize there's a tangible difference though, right? Removing exploration? Choosing when you want to advance and how?

I'd be sad if they removed exploring the world at all, but I don't get the weird obsession with a "world map". They're antiquated and weird. Just let the characters out into the world to move around like any modern game does. We don't need the weird zoomed-out bullshit with tiny characters who are still totally out of proportion with the larger environment.

It works in something cartoony like Ni no Kuni, but not here. I want to exit Midgar and walk a lengthy journey in a fully-realized world like we will in FFXV.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

Utterly disgusting. And worst part of it all? With each episode, they'll probably jump a few 'moments' (probably the world map sections and the side-quest shit).

In the optimistic sense. If each part is truly a fully fledged game, then we may be getting something even greater than we thought.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.

The meltdown over this is unbelievable, lol. This is what they decided to do to make the game as good as it can be. People will get to play part of it sooner this way.

Anybody defending this decision is such a corporate suckup. This is really, really cynical.
Sure... or we realize that it's not cutting corners or money grabbing, but a legitimate decision to make the game as big as it has to be, and that episodic gaming isn't inherently bad.

So I guess we are getting FF7R-2, FF7R-3.

I don't like this. Cause they can charge $60 a pop and stagger the releases. Like we will even get to play the complete game by 2020? This is nuts.

But then who says they're doing the same thing here? Look at how the first Xenoblade did things. There were really large areas connected by the linear storyline which you could return to later by fast travel.

I swear, Square is gonna be the end of me. My heart is aching right now. I mean, actual literal pain like knives. Only thing keeping me on the positive side is the small, tiny hopes of this shit being divided into three parts like the discs and not... seven or whatever.
Final Fantasy VIIR-I
Final Fantasy VIIR-II
Final Fantasy VIIR-III
Final Fantasy VIIR-IV
Final Fantasy VIIR-V
Final Fantasy VIIR-VI
Final Fantasy VIIR-VII

i was so naive to hold out hope that square wouldn't fuck this up.

hype deflated :(

I thought the mistakes would come from how they would tackle characters and scenes, not... not a devastating structural issue. But I probably should've anticipated that instead since all small problems stem from large structural ones.
