I dont understand your post. There are opinions of all kinds (literally) so of course quite a lot of people will think/believe that. Were you trying to challenge that belief? Its an opinion, and its valid.
I'm sure there's lots of people that think the Transformers movies are cinematic masterpieces as well.

well not really...yet

Transformers movies are much closer to Marvel movies in terms of quality if anything, and even then, at least Bay knows how to frame a decent shot once in a while.

When Avatar released the Euro was worth 1.46 USD. Right now it is worth 1.09 USD. The GBP was 1.63 USD, right now it is worth 1.54. The AUD was .93 USD now it is .71. The CAD was .95 USD, now it is .73. The Russian Ruble was .3 USD now its .15 USD. Just about everything is down against the dollar, some currencies substantially, since Avatar was released.

The point is that even if SW somehow matched Avatar gross's or surpassed it, it would still bring in substantially less gross in $USD.

You know, this all makes sense and all, but then I see Furious 7 just did almost 1.2 billion dollars overseas this year and I wonder why TFA somehow can't beat that by a substantial amount.

Not enough to overtake Avatar of course but still quite a lot.

I don't think many here on GAF thought that? Most here were actually expecting a decreased over the first.

There is a very funny thread you must have missed. Was about SW vs Ultron at box office. Many lols, much crow.

well i mean yeah the trailers werent very good but I want to say that most went into Ultron being optimistic about it. Otherwise, why would you go see it in the theater if you thought you were in for a turd?

Of course people who fell for the trailer went to the movie. I'm not talking about those poor souls.

Are you being purposely a contrarian? Avatar was totally received well by critics and the general populace alike.

Mr. Cameron's singular vision has upped the ante for filmed entertainment, and given us a travelogue unlike any other. I wouldn't want to live on Pandora, mainly because of the bad air, but I'm glad to have paid it a visit.

James Cameron has turned one man's dream of the movies into a trippy joy ride about the end of life -- our moviegoing life included -- as we know it.

Whatever way you choose to look at it, Avatar's shock and awe demand to be seen. You've never experienced anything like it, and neither has anyone else.

Peter Howell
Toronto Star
Twelve years after his triumph with Titanic, Cameron has successfully made a digital blockbuster feel as warm as an old-time movie, where blood temperature was more important than pixels.

There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely.

Kirk Honeycutt
Hollywood Reporter
The screen is alive with more action and the soundtrack pops with more robust music than any dozen sci-fi shoot-'em-ups you care to mention.

Heck, there's even a brand new Avatar-themed Cirque de Soliel show happening in January - and I got my tickets yo.

Weather here on the east coast has been amazing. 40s and sometimes mid 50s! This is freaky winter weather.

So doesn't look like a storm is coming like what happened with Avatar.

60 degrees and Sunny here in southern Indiana yesterday.

We're usually in the low 40's and dreary this time of year.

How in the hell did both Avatar and Jurassic World make so much money in the BO?

Not a question about film quality- but were people really seeing these movies multiple times in the theater or something?
I saw Avatar 3 times in the theaters. It was a great event movie, a great movie, was hyped to hell and it had great 3d implementation.

I saw it 2d first, then went back for 3d, then saw it a third time. It's a really great movie with good spacing, action, decent story. I don't really see why it's 'hated'. Dislike, ambivalence, OK.

But when you look at the reaction then, and the reaction today, it's quite different. The allure of the technology and CG made it a huge film, whereas today - when you wipe that away - it does not have the same impression. In fact, the story itself is a retelling of 2 or 3 other films.

By who? People on neogaf? It's the only place I see this sentiment.

I think you can say that for almost any movie, especially in the action/adventure/sci-fi genre. I don't get why people complain about the story so much, personally. That same formula has been used so many times by both good and bad movies, and those in between.

It still has the same impression now as it did 6 years ago. The vocal minority that said the movie was dances with blue cat smurfs after the first teaser are the same people pooping on the movie now.

You really want to have the retelling argument in a Star Wars thread?

The only thing that will beat Avatar...

is Avatar 2

JC is KING

I'd honestly be surprised if Avatar 2 even cracked a billion, let alone came anywhere close to Avatar 1.

same shit happened with Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars, like Avatar, was the event film that everyone went to check out. The sequel didn't have the same pull, even though it was coming off the highest grossing film of all time.

Only Cameron outsells Cameron. SW will not come close. I would think it will be lucky to cross 2 Billion let alone reach Avatar.

Upside, inside out he's livin la vida loca, He'll push and pull you down, livin la vida loca
Force Awakens won't cross $250 million in the US

I wonder what Cameron's got up his sleeves for Avatar 2. He's going to need to jumpstart another 3D-like craze if he wants to cross that 3 billion mark.

I don't think anybody thinks Avatar 2 will surpass the first. But it will make a fuckload. And Cameron will make the sequels something special.

I think if you don't have your tickets bought by now you aren't seeing it opening weekend. Certainly not twice. There is a finite limit on screen availability.

Every theater around is putting it on as many screens as possible many of which are showing it non stop 3,4,5am shows even.

Im going 7 & 10:30 pm on thursday and probably a third time fri or sat

History.

This is 1999 all over again.

"You better watch out, Cameron! Titanic is going down! STAR WARS is BACK! Ain't nothing going to stop it!"

How is this remotely close to the prequel situation? Advertising/marketing alone is completely different with the nature of the internet/social media. Star Wars was sold and is under different leadership. The first two movies were pretty poorly received by both media and fans. If this movie is as good as people are saying it is, it's gunna have long legs. It's really silly to say it doesn't have a chance based on the success of the prequels. The last one came out ten years ago under completely different circumstances. Plus this is a new story that advances the plot we were left with decades ago.

I'm not saying it WILL do it, but it's silly to say it absolutely won't because it didn't happen 10-15 years ago.
