Oddly enough one of the impressions I am waiting to hear is about how the Disney music meshes with the start of the film. That Fox Fanfare not being there is going to feel weird.

Last I heard they're not running the Disney logo in front of it, like Marvel films. If you want to hear the new Lucasfilm fanfare it's on YouTube.

Stark Trek, Super 8 and Into Darkness were all great movies.

And he has produced tons of other shows and movies that I liked.
Super 8 falls into the disappointment category. And Into Darkness was an incomprehensible mess when it wasn't trying to make nostalgia grabs which mean nothing to anyone who hasn't seen Wrath of Kahn.

And Lost, while fascinating, went completely off the rails. What else did he do? That Alcatraz show that went nowhere...

I thought seeing this on day one wasn't all that important to me but it getting spoiled must suck.

There's 3D IMAX seats available for the 16th. Might just drag someone with me.

Doubt that's the permanent one. I would bet John Williams writes something new for TFA instead of them using a hacked-up bit of score from one of the other movies.

Do you guys think the movie will have "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away", and an opening text crawl? I suppose it's a Star Wars thing, but I don't think there's any reason to do it other than nostalgia.

Holy fucking shit, I searched "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away" on Google to make sure I had it right, and... stuff happened. DO IT.

Still nervous about this. I remember the hype for Episode 1...

Honestly, I got really hyped for the SW ep I trailer, but even though I watched it a ton of times, outside of Qui-Gon and Darth Maul, I was already picking up on the signs of some terrible shit. The Duel of the Fates music video with audio snippets hyped me up a bunch more though.

Meanwhile, here, just awesomeness all around. Actors, director, everyone is saying all the right things. Which means, at worst it's mediocre, but never Jake Lloyd, Jar Jar Binks, Trade blockades, pointless CGI action sequences levels of bad.

I think JJ said he was only involved in the pilot episode of Lost. Everybody always ask him what happens at the end to troll him a little bit.

Anyway, he talked about his failure with Super 8 and ST:ITD and said that he'll focus much more on the story in his upcoming projects. We'll see if he learned his lessons.

Hahaha! That's great!

It wouldn't be a Star Wars saga film without "a long time ago" and the opening crawl. Whether they decide to use them in Rogue One is a different story.

I guess you're technically right in that it's just nostalgia - but it's a fricken Star Wars movie it has to have those. Let the spin-offs do something different maybe.

Also holy shit at that last part haha

Here's hoping. I think he gets what makes Star Wars cool - it's just a matter if his obsession with the mystery box will cloud his judgement.

Uh... nothing happens to me :(

FINALLY some new music! And it sounds great!

I wonder why they're being so coy with the soundtrack. We had lots of samples and music videos for the prequels.

Watching this now it would be a real new perspective on the original trilogy if Yodas speech turned out to be true, that Lukes rushed training caused him to eventually fall to the evil path. As of now we view that speech as Luke disregarding the jedi ways and his elders in order to find the good in Vader, becoming the true jedi, but if he turns evil in this film then...well Yoda had a point.
It would be one of the few things that could really make me truly disappointed with this movie; Luke having turned to the dark side. He had his big test in Return of the Jedi, if he passed that test I struggle to come up with a reasonable explanation for why he would have turned later on. I also don't think it would be all that interesting once the initial shock-value would wear off.

Lost isn't on him. He did the pilot and worked a bit on the overall series story but left the series in the hands of Lindeloff and Cuse.

Super 8 was fine for an 80's throwback. It nailed what it set out to do.

Into Darkness is a really fun film but it seems that i'm one of the few who give it a pass

I'm pretty sure I read a while back that it definitely has an opening crawl. I'd assume "A long time ago..." goes with it, providing a nice bit of silence before the score kicks in.

This actually disappointed me when I first heard it.
I love all the unique Disney intros.

So simple yet so good.

Tomorrowland has a good one. But yeah, Tron Legacy's is the best.

I don't understand why some expected it, it is kind of baffling. Disney owns multiple film and television studios, Walt Disney Pictures, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, ABC Studios, ESPN, etc.... And none of them have anything to do with one another other than being part of the larger Disney corporation. They all do their own film and tv work.

Only Walt Disney Pictures films get the Disney castle opening. Why would anyone assume that Walt Disney Pictures would be making this film, not Lucasfilm?

It's like being surprised you don't see the Disney castle logo when you see one of ESPNs 30 for 30 films.

I think Kylo Ren will turn out to be basically a Vader fanboy. Thinks having a mask, a cool cape and a red laser sword is all you need, but lacks actual training in the Force. Then Luke and Finn can be like, "Bitch, naw".

Never expected it just disappointed when I heard we aren't getting it.

Marvel studios seemed different anyway, they were their own thing going full steam ahead before Disney bought them.

Lucasfilm however previously had 20th Century Fox above them, Disney bought them with basically nothing going on besides a cartoon series.
Disney is what got the ball going in this case so I don't think Disney parent-corp branding would be all that crazy.

Finn looks pretty terrified of kylo ren at the end of the finale trailer

It better have it. I think it's great if the new films explore novel directions, but certain things - like the opening crawl, John Williams on the score, and Ben Burtt on the sound design - need to be there for a Star Wars movie.

Yeah. I can't see Finn teaching Kylo anything.

That lightsaber doesn't have a good track record either.

They just dont throw it on randomly like that though. Only films actually produced by Walt Disney Pictures get it. This is clearly not a film being made by Walt Disney Pictures.

The doubt about the Disney logo wasn't about wether Walt Disney Pictures would be producing, but wether it would be distributing the film under its banner. Marvel and Lucasfilm weren't distribution labels prior to their acquisitions, so bigger studios like Fox and Paramount had their names in front of them and handled the distribution. Disney cut out the middle man and made both brands stand on their own. An example is everything from Iron Man to Iron Man 3 in the MCU, which Paramount basically had nothing to do with other than financing and distribution, little to nothing production-wise.

To simplify it:
Production company = The actual company producing the film.
Distributor = The company financing the project and handling distribution.

It was clear from the first teaser this was not going to be the case.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but when can we expect early impressions/reviews?

Some press are attending the premiere on the 14th. Other press are getting screenings on the 15th. The review embargo is the 16th.

So full reviews on the 16th, but probably lots of twitter buzz on the night of the 14th.
