Star Wars: The Force Awakens |OT| A New Hope

So is Ren a title like Darth? I hope we don't get a new "Ren" every movie like Marvel movies. The biggest mistake of those movies is they waste the villains.

George Lucas did not write this movie.

Think of it like this:
1. OT = Mostly collaborative effort
2. PT = George Lucas doing his thing.
3. NT = Collaborative effort.

You don't, not even for a second, need to worry about the PT and everything that went wrong there. Nobody that made that shit is around for this. The movie might still suck for whatever reasons, but it won't be because of whatever was wrong with the PT in your opinion. Don't sweat it, is all I'm saying :D

Huh? I'm not worried about Lucas. I'm worried about Disney turning Star Wars into Marvel movies where they churn through forgettable villains every time.

Yeah, I misred. My bad.

I don't see how JJ Abrams and Kasdan are related to Marvel movies either, though. Nor is the idea of making a big Trilogy of movie the same as the phases and individual movie set-up of Marvel either, so even there, don't worry. This is movie 1 of 3, so even if Kylo Ren were only a villain in this movie, I guarantee you there's a big bad overarching for all three.

I greatly look forward to the "Who is the best/worst villain, Thanos or Snoke" in 6 or so months time

It will be fun

People planning to wait hours+ in the theatre to get a good seat: what are you planning to do to kill time? I'm going with friends, so I need group activity ideas.

I've seen this at my local Target/Walmart, it might be a fun time killer if your buddies are as into Star Wars as you.

There are about half a dozen good things in AotC:

-The opening Courscant chase
-Ewan McGregor performance of Alec McGuinness playing Obi-Wan Kenobi
-Samuel L. Jackson's line reading of "This party's over"
-John Williams
-Padme's many increasingly silly outfits, complete with the last one where a monster just so happen to tear right across that sexy midriff.
-That sound of Boba Fett's sesimic charges. Silence then....BWAAAAAAAAAAAM

PadmefullGeo2.jpg
You forgot the death of Jango and birth of Boba Fett scene. At least, I like that scene. It's appreciably dark.

Jar Jar and midichlorians aren't even that bad compared to Anakin and Padme. The central relationship (well, arguably second to Obi/Ani) is just so bad; I don't know how you can fix the trilogy when its riding on two terrible performances with terrible material to work with terribly directed. It's rotten at the core.

On the flip side if they somehow redid everything involving those two, I think the resulting films, even with everything else intact, would be exponentially better. I can tolerate the cheese- the originals had it after all- and I actually think the high level plot beats are pretty good. Hell, I even like the idea of following the political scene as a major thread- classic Shakespearean stuff and, given that the fall wasn't just Anakin's but a republic's, it makes sense to touch on it. George had something with the whole modern take on a classic tragedy; he just ruined it with the execution.

Yes, my main problem with PT is just Anakin. He's just so badly written. I don't know why they though making him the most unlikable character in the series was a good idea. I was supposed to feel bad that he ends up being Darth Vader, but I ended up not giving a fuck and though he deserved it.

It also shows how much better Vader is as a character compared to Anakin.

My stats exam was moved to an hour before my showing. Without stating the obvious, it's even if the exam didn't take me a full hour I can't exactly just show up 5 minutes before it starts and get a seat that isn't the first row.

I emailed my professor requesting to go to the exam time for the 11 AM section of the class. The problem with this is that my section doesn't have the exam until Thursday, whereas the 11 AM section takes it on Monday. That cuts out four days of potential study time.

No idea what to do.

See it Saturday.

So I showed my girlfriend the trailers for this movie, she's a massive Star Wars fan but she says it looks really bad.
Not being a SW fan I'm just curious, what do people think?

That's also not something you need to worry about because Disney gives these studios a fairly high level of autonomy. It's not like Disney bought LucasFilm, dissolved them, and is making Star Wars movies in-house at Walt Disney Pictures.

LucasFilm and Marvel are seperate companies that exist under the Disney umbrella but are still making their own decisions. Just because Marvel does things one way doesn't mean Lucasfilm will.

There was an interview with Kathleen Kennedy recently regarding the anthology films and she specifically said they're not interested in doing what Marvel does by planning out cross-overs and over-arching phases. Each anthology film is being treated as its own standalone story and characters will only cross over if the writers of those anthology films feel like it makes sense for their stories.

Saturday watchers...Unite!

Saturday too.

Honestly I wanted to go Friday, but I told my sister that I would go with her and she now only can go to Saturday (despite she told me Friday was ok at first).

It's not so bad. She told me to wait for Christmas but fuck that.

Everyone I know that that is a fan of SW loves TFA trailers.

Does she like the OT? It's hard to see someone who does not loving the feel of the trailers or at least the returning characters. The tone is spot on imo.

I have to wait for Saturday to go with my sister as well. She got a new job and could technically go Thursday, but I already have the tickets purchased.

After marathoning the PT, I do agree with that. I still maintain that Revenge of the Sith is a really good film on par with the OT and does not deserve the hate it gets on the internet from Pinkett et al. In the beginning of the film, Anakin is actually a likable person and does get along well with Obi-Wan and Padme. Compared to Attack of the Clones, where Anakin's constant bickering and arguing with Obi-Wan got real tiring. I think Lucas realizes this and really fleshes out Anakin's character in the Clone Wars series and as a result it improve the PT because of this.

The greatest sin of the PT is not Jar Jar or midichlorians, but the absolute failure to establish Anakin Skywalker as a tragic hero and dear friend of Obi-Wan.

I agree RotS is way better than the other two, and they tried to make Anakin a better written character (even though his turn on the dark side is so rushed).

Honestly, I never fully watched Clone Wars, but I'm a weird dude that rarely watch series. I saw a couple of episodes on TV and it seemed like the characters were way better written than the movies.

Disney isn't making the movie - Lucasflm is. Everything we've heard is that Disney have been extremely hands-off.

And to be honest with someone with Kathleen Kennedy's pedigree in charge, it's a completely different situation from the Marvel setup.

Is this thread safe if I've only seen trailer footage? I'm so scared of the spoiler thread. I have nightmares of clicking on it by accident

Unless she's still bitter about the Legends canon getting folded, I doubt she's a massive fan.

Of course, it could also be that she has different tastes but I'm too hyped at the moment to be open minded of such views so I'll reiterate what was mentioned before: break up with her.

Are you showing the correct trailers breh?

Uuhhhhhhh maybe? yes.

She's a massive Star Wars fan but she hadn't seen the trailers until you showed her?

She has no internet and her phone only has like, 100 mb

OT, yes. Prequel trilogy not so much. She's still watching it regardless though.

Should I watch the PT? I just rewatched the OT, great movies. I've seen Phantom Menace and Clones years ago, barely remember them. Never watched Revenge of the Sith. I've seen the Plinkett reviews, so I know what happens in the movies, but actually sitting through the movies themselves looks painfully boring. I don't want to sour myself on Star Wars before Force Awakens.

I'd start with e3 maybe

I'm going Friday morning at the 11:30 am showing. I still think it'll still get packed, since kids are out of school. I'm trying to decide how early me and my friends should show up... I'm thinking at least an hour early.

Do yourself a favor and at least watch ROTS. As I said earlier, it really is not as bad as the internet fanboys say it is and has some really powerful moments.

My wife and I just finished of the OT and then she pushed to start the PT. we are half way through The Phantom Menace and everything about it is a mess. The pod racer scene is pretty good when you ignore the banter, but the dialog in this movie is horrid and either goes nowhere or shits on the legacy material. I don't remember The Clone Wars being better and fear I am just going to fast forward through most of the 'story' in Revenge of the Sith. With that said, as a big (re: blinded by nostalgia) fan of the OT, I figure the PT is a good way to temper my expectations going into the new one.

But if you haven't seen them, just watch the action scenes in order and read a summary of the story - it might even be more cohesive that way. The PT is worth watching as a curiosity, but if you have made it this far without seeing them, you can probably wait until after seeing Episode VII.

Going in on Wednesday, officially entered the slomo-zone. I booked tickets to three showings on consecutive days, this is like intensive therapy. Waiting feels bad.

RotS is a fantastic movie IMO. Almost every Star Wars fan I've spoken to thinks it's one of the best in the series. Of course it has a few problems, but the hyperbole on GAF/Reddit etc. is just ridiculous.

You should at least watch it for Sheev's antics :P

ROTS is worth it for Order 66, IMHO. Best sequence in the prequels.

That and Ian McDiarmid/Sheev's scenery chewing. He doesn't mind it's all green screen - he chews it all like a BAMF.

I still hate how Anakins turn is handled, the Clone Wars helped some, but besides that, I'd put Episode III above IV in my personal ranking.

Saturday watchers...Unite!

I just bought tickets for Saturday morning yesterday. I'm bringing the kids and I don't think they are quite ready to deal with Friday night release shenanigans.

I basically try to shield them from who I was in my mid-20s, just as a general rule of thumb, and mid-20s me wouldn't be awake for the earliest showing of a movie, let alone out in public.

I will not visit any Star Wars Threads or Star Wars sites until Thursday. So this will be my last post regarding Star Wars before the movie :)

I saw this amazing gif above, but I wanna save me those moments for the big screen. And I am totally afraid of spoilers!

It is sunday, but I am already nervous. I almost had tears in my eye, when I saw the trailer during my last cinema visit. Can't imagine what will happen when I actually see this movie. Never thought that after Episode 3 we would get another Star Wars Movie.

Ehh, just do it. There are good bits in Menace and Clones, believe it or not. You just have to sit through a lot of nonsense to find them. If it helps, watch them all with an air of "Well, at least TFA (probably) won't be like this!"

And you absolutely owe it to yourself to see Sith. Best of all the prequels by a country mile.

EDIT: Someone earlier in here linked to this AotC "Anti-Cheese Edit" that might help out. Apparently there's a TPM one as well. I say give 'em a whirl.

My friend just told me he likes the fighting in the prequels more, "it's not boring."

Sigh.

He likes the prequels more in general. He doesn't understand how anyone can like A New Hope because of "how boring and slow it is."
