No, I prefer local play if anything. More to the point, I spend far more time making games than playing them these days. I'm something of a workaholic and I get anxiety if I'm not being productive.

Yeah, I kind of thought that was the case. Whats the genre you're shooting for?

Smash, Rocket League etc... I'm down but the time difference means it'll have to be a weekend.

Fiction, I'm blaming you for the cougars that turned up in my dream last night. Tried to yell at the bastards but only a strangled yelp made it out, I assume that was the sound I made irl...

Oh yeah, that was a nice looking setup Ceallach.

I've never been hooked to an online game before, but I do love me some local multiplayer. Y'all should materialize in my apartment sometime.

Action platformer. Here are some of the posts I've made about it in the last month or so:

U guys are talking about video games?

Lol what a bunch of nerds

200.gif

Wow, this is the first time I've seen this!

I'm in love with your game's artstyle! (For some reason it brought up Hercules (the Disney animation) immediately with the main characters design)

Edit : After watching those gifs again and again, that UI is goddamn great :D

Do you have a website for it yet or just posts in the thread I can pore over?

Guys that was great fun.

I look forward to missing every aerial shot in the future. Haha
Its tough when you have a ping is that high and everyone playing is insanely good lol. That was fun though man, any time you see us playing feel free to pop in.

And do you have a link where I could check out your game?

And holy crap lilith your game looks awesome!

hahaha There's a few times where I GENIUNELY thought I saved a goal and all of a sudden "v1lla scored!". Wait what, DAMN. haha
Will do! I won't feel so weird just rocking up to the party chat this time around :p

A couple of places
There's my website which is Alphawave Games, but I haven't updated in a while (purely down to stuff that I'm not comfortable is to a high enough standard to show the world.)
Weirdly enough, I actually post quite a lot to do with the game on my instagram which is just fengshuifever

Thanks! There's a long story regarding the art style and where it comes from, but I actually haven't ever seen Hercules. Maybe the Greco-Roman columns in that first scene help it feel that way? (it's supposed to a palatial garden at the height of an early-Victorian ish /fantasy setting)

No website yet. I haven't had time, but I want to work on it soon.

I'll have to check those links when I'm not 9n mobile, I look forward to seeing what you're working on.

No worries. I'm glad you're interested though.

if a job application wants me to write a cv and only a cv am i to assume I gotta work the standard cover letter 'tell me how you match these requirements' straight into the cv itself?

also a cv is just a resume right? because i am hella not published

It was actually more the clean yet hard edge of the characters (It's more than that, but I can't put it in to words.).
But now that you mention it, maybe that column did click something subconsciously in my mind.

Aside from the game, I really recommend Hercules, even now.
It's got a very un-Disney vibe to the character design and animation.
I still love that movie so much.

Curriculum vitae (sp) is the fancy name for a resume, I guess work the cover letter in at the start? Dunno, been a looooong time since I've had to submit one.

And yeah Lili, course I'm interested.

As for MOBAs, tried a bunch, don't dig 'em. You need to play to a strict formula or you're fucked, not what I'm looking for.

Now I finally know what cv stands for.

Cover letter should be about a page and built-in, as far as I know.

It should be about respect, where you heard about the job, your intention and what you plan to do in that kind of position and how you will reach your goals and how it relates to the company you are applying to. Then your CV goes into detail about your experience and you as a person.

Wow those look gorgeous especially the swinging platform portion.
First fengshuifever and now you.
I had no idea Gaf was was oozing with actual talent.
I guess I have two games to look forward to.

Yeah, Lilith's really good. Hag Magnate is fucking the bees knees.

Or it IS the fucking bees knees.

Your game looks awesome! Really digging the aesthetic.

Thanks! :D

How have you tackled the issue to sometimes forcing the player to engage in a fight, lilith?

It depends on the situation. First, something to realize is that enemies shouldn't always have to be fought. In some games, yes, but not all. For example, it makes sense that you have to fight the enemies in Binding of Isaac. That's a game where you play it over and over and over and over, so you would quickly learn how to circle around the enemies without getting hit a lot, which just wouldn't be fun. But in something like Dark Souls, you can actually just run past most of the enemies (besides boss fights). It's just that with how easily they can kill you, it's unlikely you'll survive running past a lot of enemies until you learn their patterns.

Anyway, how have I solved it? In some places, you need to kill one of the enemies in the room to earn a key for the exit, and sometimes you also need to first fight the lesser enemies or ranged enemies who nip at you while you're working on taking out the key bearer. In other places, there will be puzzles to solve or mechanics to engage or slow terrain to traverse, so taking out the enemies will buy you the time you need. Besides that, there's also the economy to consider: fighting enemies instead of running past them will drop money, potions, weaponry and other loot.

I wish I knew how to make a game.
Me too. I was all over RPG Maker until I realized how much effort had to go into using somebody else's templates to make a game people would never play.

Yeah, but these suckers haven't asked for a cover letter, so I'm not sure whether to include one or not.

Just signed up for 24 Hour Fitness. Been a while since being a regular gym-goer. Figured it was time, along with the better eating habits I've gotten into.

Yep, I'm a fan of the artistic choices being made.

You almost always want one, unless it's a super small-time job. Even something short and sweet that will convince them to look at your resume and give you the time of day.

Nice, I was only curious because I had a think about it, because I was simply curious. I think whatever you decide comes from two sources. Location based and enemy based. Ie, be locked in a room with said enemy, a la boss fight. Or enemy based a la pick ups from the enemy. I honestly think it's very hard to deviate from that path, but out of the two options I very much prefer loot/pickups from enemies. Because you could bypass an essential fight and be stuck requiring you to find out what you had to do without being forced to progress from a locked scenario, which is very akin to old school design, which I am fond of. That doesn't mean the former is bad though, thats just my opinion. I guess it depends from what you want to achieve from that fight, locked fights are open to more diverse combat options, mainly scripted cycles, but im not too clued up on game design so thats just from observation. I think enemy fights on the open map don't quite reach the same level as dedicated boss fights.

That being said. There is one aspect I think would be a difference to these kind of games, difficult to implement, and may even be an acquired taste. It might not even be that unique, I dont play enough indie games to make that decision. Not only that it depends heavily how it can fit to the overall flow of the game and if it fits the storyline or not.

However if you take the mob pickup mechanic of progression, and disregard both a locked scenario and a specific zone for that mob to reside. You could add a hunt mechanic. Basically, I would say before the latter half of the game, there could be a mob, where the previous 20% of the overall natural progression of the game that would require you to fight said mob. Could hint at clues of a required fight that would require a specific item to progress that would be a major pivotal point in the story.

So the clues could come from, signs, item descriptions, and mobs at a certain level talking before a fight OR being defeated in a fight. The mob could be in a secret hard to find area, or could move around the map in a cycle that would normally avoid the player based on its movements, but could be tracked down with the clues and with or without items that could aid that process.

I know it's very convoluted, but honestly, when I saw your first link, I was genuinely curious about how you could go about that issue in a unique way, because in my own experience everytime ive seen that issue tackled it has come from a very established position.

Anyway, dont take my opinion for anything substantial, im just being a drunk noob.

Yeah, but these suckers haven't asked for a cover letter, so I'm not sure whether to include one or not.

Always include a cover letter

Are you in the US?
If its a position that has a lot of people gunning for it, I wouldn't include a cover letter if they don't specifically ask for one. Typically those are tossed to the side to review the actual resume. Recruiters usually rush through the resume so you'd want to make it succinct and as clear as possible. No blocks of text, keep it simple with bullet points and facts. Format is key.

These people go through myriads of resumes, the last thing they want is a lot of things to read.

Just learned that a former teacher of mine passed away today. I'm in shock. He was an ornery old cuss but I owe him a great deal, both as a person and as a musician.

Not in the US, but good points.

I think I'll write a short one. Might as well. It is a position that wants writing experience anyway, so...

It's one of my life's creative ambitions to make a game, and I think I have enough programming experience to make it happen, but I haven't yet hit an idea that seems worth pursuing. I should probably just make something really small and attainable.
