Xenia Is A Working Xbox 360 Emulator,Showcased Running Commercial Game For First Time

Yesterday I got to test Xenia with Lost Odyssey, which is probably my most wanted 360 game I want to play again. When I saw it boot and load the start screen with the music, I was so happy. It crashed upon loading a new game, but I still have high hopes that I finally get to play it again within the next few years.

E: Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Red Dead Redemption. That's my holy trinity of 360 games I want to see emulated asap.

And PGamer, thank you so much for keeping us updated in all emulator threads. You're the reason I subscribed to them.

I hope they get Catherine, Red Dead Redemption and Vanquish to work. How many years would we have to wait for games to be playable in the emulator?

Catherine does work text is broke abd looks weird but it fully workss

Man, I'm playing for the plot, so text would be the most important thing to me. Though, the gameplay is super addicting. I hope they'll get it to work a hundred percent or close to it.

Pure speculation on my part, but I'd say another 2-3 years to get them reasonably playable, without huge issues and some minor glitches on a case by case basis.

The problem is that this emulator is done by mostly one person, with only two others making bigger contributions to the source code. Now I obviously know absolutely nothing about the creator, Ben Vanik, but this seems to be mainly a passion project and as we all know, life can always get in the way of these things and put a (temporary) hold on it. I really hope there are going to be more people that support the project, as time goes on.

What is the best way to make iso's of these games? Can I just put them into my BluRay drive and rip them with a standard imaging program?

Do you have a guide on how to set it up?

I built it from source using visual studio - reason being is that I wanted to look at the code and change the flag that indicates whether XBLA games are in trial mode or not (by default, Xenia has it set to trial mode for all games).

If you just want the newest build and want to mess around without minding that limitation, recent builds can be found at emucr.

As for usage, no setup is needed. Simply load a game and it plays. 360 pad support is natively built in. As for getting hold of XBLA games, you need to rip them yourself or via other methods.

I still have a rip of my Banjo Kazooie and Tooie from ages ago, so I was good to go. I haven't got Perfect Dark to test, although I do have it also purchased on my account! Maybe there's a way to download it via the web without using a 360?

That's... interesting. Would it be against GAF's rule to link to your compiled version, if you could uploaded? The version on EMUCR is a couple weeks old and doesn't have the Trial option turned off.

This is what I'd like to know. I have a few 360 games I used to play on my brother's machine, but now that we don't live in the same house they just take up space on my shelf.
Getting them going again with this would be great

Wow, progress on 360/ps3/wiiu emulators are really great right now. Can't wait for the day I can play ALL Metal Gear games on PC. Plus Read Dead Redemption. Hnnnnghhhhhh.

^Also curious about using discs, can xenia/rpcs3 read from the drive? Or can you just clone images? Roommate has a bunch of games I'd love to test sometime.

I know for a fact they can't read from the drive directly—you have to make an image somehow.

Even Dolphin, which is a very mature emulator, can't actually play Wii games off of a DVD drive (yes, even if you have one of those special models that are capable of reading Wii discs). You have to make images first.

It kind of sucks IMO. I was actually looking into getting one of those drives for the novelty of being able to play my actual discs.

The only emulator I know of that can run a game disc directly is PCSX2. And, by the way, it's really freaking cool—just pop an actual, physical PS2 game into your computer's DVD drive, and play away. This supposedly lowers performance a little, but I've used it a ton and never had any problems.

I've always wondered how Sony and Microsoft will react to the PS3 and 360 emulations being completed. Like, I feel like they tolerated people who emulated Xbox/PS1/2 games but with this... I feel like they might actually take action.

and on what legal basis would they be able to do this?

they wont.

Two years after the PS3's release, PS2 emulation was perfectly playable—I remember playing through KH2 in PCSX2 in 2008.

It's currently two years after the PS3 and XB1's release, and Xbox 360 emulation is just starting to become barely usable. (PS3 emulation is even further behind)

We're actually well behind schedule, so to speak.

There's always the DMCA. Look what happened to Bleem! The difference, of course, is that was commercial software as opposed to an open source project, but the console makers could still sue if they wanted to.

They won't, though.

Edit: To clarify, I know that Sony didn't actually win its case against Bleem, but the lawsuit was successful in that it forced the company to shut down.

I mean it's like, they have services and shit to try and bring back PS3/360 games to the current gen systems and I feel like, even if it doesn't actually hurt them, they may not like games from last gen be emulated.

Amazing progress. All I really want is DOAX2.

Also, I wonder if it's possible to emulate the 360's Xbox 1 emulator?

For you.

They can't, and they won't.

This is a good question. The only good Xbox 1 emulator is slow as fuck. This might be a solution but we should remember that backward compatibility on 360 is far from being solid&reliable.
Here in EU, fo example, after so many years Orta still stops working after chapter 4, while in US systems this problem don't exist.
