Destiny has grown stagnant.

Destiny has had quiet periods before, of course, but its current slump feels like one of its lowest ebbs. Players, as ever, desperately need new things to do. But Destiny has also been struck by various bugs, while the game's community has become increasingly infuriated by a lack of communication. And then there's Bungie itself, which from behind-the-scenes reports sounds increasingly unable to cope with maintaining the game while building the next.

I loved Destiny: The Taken King, which brought fresh life to the game and redefined this strange loot-driven FPS role-playing MMO. Destiny's second year of life got off to a great start - and this was only the start, players were told - which only makes it more of a shame that now, at the start of 2016, any goodwill generated back in September has all but evaporated.

There are various reasons for this, but most seem to stem from Bungie's constant struggle to keep players busy. It's like that scene in The Wrong Trousers where Gromit is trying to lay track while riding on the train just behind. Bungie has been fighting to stay in front of its player base ever since Destiny vanilla launched.

And it's different, now. Last year there was a plan. Players knew what was coming because many had paid for it in advance - and while The Dark Below and House of Wolves had their issues, the fact they were scheduled meant expectations were set for the year ahead. Bungie's content plan was 'well telegraphed', to use a hateful marketing phrase.

This year, Destiny has flown blind. Bungie has failed to set players' expectations and the impression is one of indifference. That, or the developer is simply keeping schtum about the road ahead because there is so little to talk about. There was no DLC plan announced for this year, but there was still an expectation DLC would come based upon last year's schedule and a long-ago leaked plan that suggested this would be repeated. And also, most importantly, because Bungie never told fans anything different. Bungie does not exist in a vacuum - it knows which of its plans have leaked and what Destiny players expect. But it took until the time players expected this year's first DLC to launch (a year on from December 2014's The Dark Below) for someone at Bungie to speak up and say - actually, we're not doing that, we are doing something else, do calm down.

Plans change, and fair enough. Bungie reportedly scrapped this year's DLC schedule in order to focus more fully on Destiny 2, which required more time - although Bungie has of course said nothing on the matter. What it has done, however, is sell vanity items to keep the money rolling in, while events and smaller updates of new missions roll out for free in reward. That was the idea, anyway, but after a low-key Halloween mask affair and a limited-time Sparrow Racing event that was more of a beta for a fuller future offering, Destiny's community is asking - loudly - when those new missions are coming.

Bungie is in a Catch-22 situation, though. If it comes clean, as some players see it, then it will effectively be telling players to switch off their game. This is something no developer is going to do - especially with The Division on the horizon.

The level of "saltiness" among the game's Reddit community is now so high that some Destiny fans have created their own "No Sodium Destiny Reddit" where being salty about the game is banned. Even high-profile YouTubers such as Datto, who has appeared on Bungie streams and been flown out to the studio, are abandoning the game - at least, for the moment. Bungie needs to be more open with its community and let people know what to expect. With this, Destiny's community can better manage their own expectations. Bungie has always talked about Destiny being a journey it will make in partnership with its fans. It's time to see if this can really happen.

How many threads and articles do we need about this?
Destiny is just slow now. Happens with every game but with Destiny its a big deal for some reason and there needs to be a article about everyday.. Dont get it.
Maybe its clicks?

It's terrible that this is even a phenomenon - I know it's nothing new but to see it discussed so openly and in plain terms is. There shouldn't be a psychological barrier to putting a game down when you're tired of it or think you've exhausted it of possibilities, and actively trying to prevent it is disgusting.

When the biggest thing you advertise about your game is its "living world" and your game world is about as lively as a body in a roadside ditch, it's fair game for people to criticize and question.

It's probably a big deal because Destiny is an MMO FPS. MMOS need love or else they lose their player base.

It's a Online game that bungie expects it's players to play all the time.
I think it's fair to call them on not providing the players with enough content to do so and not showing anything for the playerbase to look forward to.

Leave poor Destiny alone?

What with all these Destiny hate articles from the gaming sites lately?

In case you haven't noticed, a lot of people at gaming sites were into Destiny. And they've grown as disillusioned and pissed off as many of us have.

I played destiny for around 6-8 hours aday from its release up until TTK now I rarely put in 20 mins a week. TTK killed it for me.

All valid points if Destiny was a subscription based game imo.

Yep. Similar story for me.

Endgame amounted to chasing numbers and not actual meaningful loot from the raid. PVP was destroyed when they nerfed everything where it became this boring meta of Pulse Rifles.

The game was much more fun and engaging in Year 1 than it is in Year 2.

So when a developer promises that a game will be constantly updated with new content and will give you a reason to keep playing, then that doesn't come to fruition, we are supposed to just say "eh, whatever"?

Destiny now has microtransactions it's now fair for the playerbase to assume that they will get updates often like other F2P games like warframe.

But they are coming. That they suck is something else.

I like pulse rifles =(

As triplewreck said, Bungie has proven they will outright lie to us. The trust is gone.

There is no plan for content and the game is saddled with numerous bugs.

I'm taking a break.

I don't get it. I'm going through TTK for the first time now and I'm really, really enjoying this game for the first time. It also feels good to see that it's the last thing I need to buy until Destiny 2, whenever that is. Destiny is not the only game I play nor the only game I want to play. I'm perfectly fine with being done with Destiny 1 after TTK, then taking a break until Destiny 2 comes out. In fact, that suits me better than the constant mediocre DLC drops.

TTK was SO GOOD. It was amazing.

Everything, every single thing, they've done to the game since then, has been a disappointment (SRL, seriously?) or an active step backwards. Some of those changes they walked back again (weapon parts) but it soured me on the game, hard. Bungie's communication fucking sucks and Deej comes off like an asshole. They need to do better.

People know that it's okay to play other games at the same time you play Destiny, right? Even Bungie has outright said the game is designed with the assumption you're going to be doing other not-Destiny things.

Comet 2 , according to the initial leaked plan is next year. We're due full game 2 this year but thats sounding unlikely...

Contract was out of date a long time ago and nothing was never announced for this year so far. Come again?

I find a lot of the Destiny community super entitled to be honest.
The game is finished. It's rare that a game continues to receive content updates after its first year of release.
Well done lads. You've played it, you've beat Destiny. You finished the last level.

Now move onto something else. You don't expect any other game to keep shovelling you content right up until the sequel is released, why is this any different? I don't expect any more DLC packs to be released for Advanced Warfare either.

Taken king has been out for barely 4 months and in that time they've released new content. What are people expecting? A new raid? How long will they keep people happy vs how much work it would take?

They've already said more content is coming. It's not even February. Seriously people, there are other games. Do your dailies and go play witcher or something. I promise bungie doesn't mind.

These people would have lose their mind in the old days. There was a 3 year gap between Halo 2's last meaningful DLC and Halo 3. It's only been 3 weeks since the last new content and people are going "the game has no content!!"

If they released more content all the time, I'd effectively be less interested in the game. The current model just suits me, I have other things I want to do with my time as well. I don't want to constantly be playing this game and spending small sums of money on it, otherwise I'd play a F2P game instead.

Another one.

I'm actually getting back into Destiny more so right now to do some PVP stuff but the lag is killing me. Hoping to hit some personal goals in Destiny before March comes.

I see that Destiny articles do a good job of generating clicks, therefore we have more destiny articles.

Destiny is not Halo.

Advanced Warfare isn't a persistent online universe styled after an mmo. Advanced warfare's story was finished when you beat the last level. Advanced Warfare has already been replaced by its sequel, black ops 3. Advanced warfare had a steady stream of content right up until said sequel was released. Advanced warfare never had an expectation set by the developer that it would have a content plan with frequent updates, like other persistent online community based rpg styles games. Advanced warfare didn't model itself after Diablo 3, which just received yet another huge free update filled with new areas and content.

Sorry to be harsh but this post is incredibly stupid.

I'm kind of glad, I've put more than enough time into the game and now I'm putting lots of time into other games. I'll be more refreshed to go back into destiny when there's something good to do in it again, but breaks are only a good thing in my opinion.

I think a few things are happening:

(1) They really are struggling to find the right release schedule for content and they were and likely continue to be in negotiations with Activision to work something out. They flat out said they can't keep up with an "every 3 or 4 months" type thing like they did in year one.

(2) Right now, they are catching the backlash of an MMO crowd, when the game is only partially an MMO. Everyone keeps saying "Destiny is losing the crowd!" Yeah, it is...but you also pay by installment not by month . . . So...the crowd may very well come back...Whats the problem?

(3) I think many hardcore gamers feel a little hurt. The hardcore stuck with Destiny when lots of sources and folks thought it was a awful game. The hardcore kept trumpeting how good it was. How the shooting was great...how the raids were fun...etc...etc. Did this for an entire year....Then...to hear nothing about upcoming content for 4 months...(real content...not events)...sucks. Not to mention the state of the game is rocky.

In the end...it comes down to gamers who really enjoyed playing Destiny feel disrespected.

Bungie is in a tough spot. Im sure its the nuts and bolts of game development along with the schedule of Activision is what is driving a lot of Bungie's silence.

I understand the salt, but I don't understand the what feels like real disappointment. Take some time to play something else...Come back when they release more content. There were some great games that released last year, and some solid ones on the way. Play those!

This is a dumb interpretation of the situation. Destiny has these expectations because Bungie created them. Their hype machine and the way the promoted this game caused this. They advertised the game as a "living, breathing, and constantly evolving world". Right now, it is absolutely not that.

Don't blame the player base for expecting the developer to follow up on what they promise.

Precisely this. Maybe I just don't want Destiny to be a hardcore MMO. Either way, playing TTK for the first time really made me love the game. If I can get one full game every few years (2-3-4 years, whatever), and one huge drop of content a year or two after every main game, I'll be more than happy to keep playing this series. I don't really want more than that, I don't want the game to keep begging me to come back.
